In Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway musical THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, these moody set devices--and countless others--make every scene an atmospheric vision of souped-up 19th-century Gothic bliss. Christine Daee (a luminescent Emmy Rossum) is a tortured young star who is haunted by the voice of the phantom (Gerard Butler--who also played the lead in DRACULA 2000), a musician who hides in the shadows to hide a facial disfigurement, yet sings to her obsessively. Dwelling in the dark, damp chambers beneath the Paris opera house, the phantom lords over the cast and management with artistic autocracy--he writes the shows, casts them, and threatens all who disobey his plans with dramatically violent outbursts. But when his young student Christine falls for the rich and dapper Raoul (Patrick Wilson), the phantom descends into madness. Webber's memorable songs are performed with aplomb by Rossum, whose background includes singing with the Metropolitan Opera, and Wilson and Butler provide ample accompaniment. One of the treats of the proceedings is Minnie Driver's deeply exaggerated portrayal of the jealous diva, giving this PHANTOM a very appropriate dose of comic relief. Amazing Movie!!Strengths: voice, songs Weakness: None My family loves this movie simply because we love music. We've watch it about 5 or more times. Emma Rossum's voice is beautiful, clear and much better than the original Live broadway show voice. The lyrics are soulful, powerful and catchy. A MUST for broadway musical fans!!

n/aStrengths: Captures the energy of the play Weakness: eighties guitar...enough said A big fan of Phantom of the Opera, I was looking forward to the movie coming out. Although it didn't live entirely up to my expectations, over all the movie had very interesting scenes visually. I also thought the characters were well scripted, and the singing was satisfactory(although at the risk of sounding like a theatre snob, not up to par with the actual play itself). The only time the movie...

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera...Even though the guy who played the Phantom also starred in Good Burger, this movie was about as funny as a basket of soggy fries.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera...Oh my goodness, I loved this movie. I was skeptical at first because film just doesn't have the same spark as a live Broadway show but this totally blew me away. Its beautiful to watch and Emmy Rossum, who plays Christine, is fantastic. She has a true talent.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera...I was fortunate enough to get to see this on broadway and I was captivated...so naturally when the movie came out I was really excited. I loved the fact that in the movie they add a background story for the phantom. It is a beautifully done movie.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera...I absolutely LOVED the music and the fact that the actors actually sung for themselves. Even though the Carlotta had to have someone do the singing for her, that woman was still great. It did get a little boring, but of course all movies do once in a great while. The musical scenes were very long but they had astounding mise en scene throughout the entirety of the movie. POTO had such a well...

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera
The music of the night has hit something of a sour note: Critics are calling the screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular musical histrionic, boring, and lacking in both romance and danger. Still, some have praised the film for its sheer spectacle. Top

Loved it
Strengths: Great music, great singing from the principals
Weakness: 2.33 theatrical widescreen format. I would have preferred optimized for 16:9 HDTV format
Ok, we saw the original Broadway production with Michael Crawford. We loved the live stage performance, and we also loved the dvd version. I say that because many on the internet who saw the original seemed to dislike the dvd version. I agree with Mr. Webber, they did not stray that far from the original. The dvd version seemed to fill in some blanks for me, anyhow.
