Excellent picture and a good price

Strengths: Bright crisp picture, 4ms refresh, 120mz Auto Motion Plus

Weakness: PIP can only display analog signal

This LCD has a nice crisp bright HD picture in and is capable of 1080p for BlueRay or some VOD offerings. The picture has rich blacks and nice contrast and is comparable to my Panasonic plasma. It has a quick refresh time at 4ms and Auto Motion Plus 120 Hz processing to eliminate blurring. In the setups, it has plenty of adjustments that you can make to get the picture just how you like it.

It has a swivel base and a "Touch Of Color" (ToC) bezel, which basically looks black. There is a hint of red when you look at certain angles, but really isn’t noticeable. The screen has a matte finish that helps eliminate glare and reflections. The sound is decent through down firing speakers, but I prefer to use my home theater. It has plenty of inputs including 3 HDMI inputs, component, composite with s-video and a PC input. Also has a nice backlit remote, with an intuitive layout.

One feature I like is WiseLink, which is the ability to view a slideshow on the screen. It enables you to connect a USB thumb drive that contains pictures and use the TV’s slideshow feature to watch them. I believe a memory card reader could be connected to the USB, so you could view pictures directly from a cameras memory card, but haven’t tried that yet.

One minor disappointment is the PIP feature. You can only view an analog picture in the PIP window and you are unable to swap the PIP with the main picture. Analog broadcasts are going away 2/09, but most cable companies will continue to convert digital signals back to analog on channels 2-99 after the change. So you could view those channels or use it to watch a security camera or baby monitor that you want to keep an eye on.

The LN40A630 is similar to the LN40A650 model, but cost less. The main differences are the contrast ratio of 40,000:1 rather than 50,000:1, matte vs. glossy screen, one less HDMI port and no Infolink. Infolink allows you to connect to the internet via an ethernet jack on the back of the TV, so you can pull up news, weather, and stock info from USA Today. Personally, I don't think those features are worth the extra cost.

I have to admit that I always preferred plasma TV’s and was very hesitant to go with an LCD set. In the past LCD’s had problems with fast action and contrast, which plasma’s excelled at. I was pleasantly surprised how well this set performed and highly recommend it.
