488RC2 - Wow

Strengths: Smooth as silk movement, impressive capacity, pan function

Weakness: Weight

I paired this up with a set of 055XPROB legs and all I can say is wow. This head easily handles any configuration I throw on it. It locks tight and doesn't show any creeping any way. The 3157N plates aren't expensive, so I have no qualms purchasing more for each telephoto I have. The pan function on the base is very useful, setup the shot/angle and you can pan left to right effortlessly! As another reviewer noted, the head is surprisingly heavy- but to me that says "build-quality." This head will be solid for many years to come.

Bogen 488RC2

Strengths: solid, reliable and easy to use.

Weakness: heavy.

I bought this along with my new Manfrotto 055xpro tripod. It is solid like a rock. The independent pan is so useful when you're shooting macro that require you to lower your tripod close to the ground. I really like this head even it is heavier than the 486RC2. Extra pound of weight won't kill me :)

Perfect Ball Head for Tripod

Strengths: Quick Release plate, panning, 17.6 lbs support

Weakness: Makes tripod legs a little heavy

I bought the 488RC2 ball head to go with my Bogen 190XPROB tripod. It adds almost 4.5" to your tripod height and about 1.5 lbs to your tripod. My set-up weighs in about 5.5 lbs, not too bad. But, if you're used to those cheap $30 tripods, this will seem 10 times heavier.

The ball head works great, it's easy to adjust and refine. The panning is useful and the Quick Release plate makes unmounting the camera super fast.

If you're looking for a high quality tripod ball head then look no further as this is the perfect one for you!

Awesome Ballhead!

Strengths: Great load capacity and construction at a very reasonable price point. The pan lock is a bonus!

Weakness: I do wish the QR plate (RC2) was just a little larger to create an even more stable base for my dSLR.

This ballhead is worth every penny. I'd used the 484RC2 and decided to pick up one of these as well. It can accommodate 8kg in any configuration. I didn't really need that capacity, but wanted the separate pan lock to make shooting panoramic scenes from tripod more accurate and simple. The ball and pan are fluid in their motion with no catching. I'm very happy with this product, and for the money it can't be beat.

488RC2 Midi Ball Head

Strengths: Ease of operation and secure camera mount. Both the ball and panoramic locks have a positive feel when tightening.

Weakness: None

I've mounted my Canon Rebel XT with a Sigma 80-400mm telephoto lens without any unwanted horizontal or vertical movement. The quick release works well and I like the added security locking pin that is provided with the mount. Extremely happy with the quality of construction and material finish.
