Celestron Firstscope 114 Short 4.5/1000mm f/9...

Strengths: It's a reflactor telescope, so it is good for the astronomical observation. Reasonable price.

Weakness: I had hard time to assemble this telescope. Manual needs to be improved. It's not good for planet observation. Manufacture missed three screw drivers that are critical for the assembly.

This reflactor telescope is good for the beginners who
are interested in astronomical observation.
It's inexpensive, but it has a good performance.
Light gathering power needs to be improved.
It is a manual tracking telescope, and has no GOTO
function, so beginners will experience hard time to
align, and track the stars.

Cheap telescope. Is it worth it?

Strengths: Cheap. Stable. Deep views in space.

Weakness: Some plastic parts. One eyepiece is almost garbage. I recommend you to buy extra eyepieces for better views.

I did purchase a Firstscope 114 (114mm = 4.5 inch) Short and I'm not sure whether I should return it and wait till the better ones become more available or just keep this one. A 10 inch is $700 at the moment and can't afford that right now.

I am wondering whether anybody outthere knows if the main mirror is of good quality or not. Also, can anybody recommend the best eyepieces for this telescope?

The eyepieces that come with this telescope are pretty bad, but can be easily changed. I am considering spending at least 50-100 for a better eyepiece. It is understandable that the eyepieces are crappy... If they delivered this telescope with good eyepieces, they would have to reduce the quality of other components... (or... make the whole product more expensive) and I'd rather change the eyepieces than something else.... Actually, one eyepiece of the 2 is acceptable. The more powerful one generates very fuzzy and blurry images. Personally I am disappointed by the latter. You can read a book at the light of a candle but would you do it?

Overall, this telescope seems quite acceptable; the number of plastic pieces is surprisingly very low. It is annoying that the eyepiece holder and the focuser are made of cheap plastic . But, hey... I don't see how they would break. For less than $140(including tax at the B&H store), this refractor seems pretty much the best deal to me. Am I right or should I just save my money for a better Newtonian ?

Frankly I was disappointed by the first views I got the first night. I also own a 25x100 skymaster binocular and the views are stunningly clear and crisp. As a city dweller, a binocular like this can offer more than a telescope in terms of views on low visibility.

However, after more testing and getting used to it, I'm starting to like this reflector more and more. The views in space seem deeper. I hadn't got the chance to test this telescope under very good visibility conditions. If I did, maybe this short review would be more praising than criticizing.
