Great sound and value

Strengths: SD card slot - can add additional upto 2gb sd card SRS WOW and 3D sound blows away the competition small, light, has great sound and a great screen, and great battery life

Weakness: None so far

I would highly recommend this player to anyone who is looking to buy an MP3 player. It's small, light, has great sound and a great screen, and great battery life. It's so easy to use. It comes with an armband and cover which is great while exercising. The player's SRS WOW and 3D sound blows away the competition. One big plus is the SD card slot. You can use upto a 2GB card in this player and can have a max. of 2.5GB of storage.
The earbuds that come with this player are of excellent quality. Sandisk has also included 3 different sizes of covers for the earbuds, which I liked. So you can have a good fit for your ears by experimenting with the 3 sizes.
It is very easy to download music on this player, just connect to your PC/Laptop and in XP it will be recodnized as a external storage. Now all you need to do is drag and drop the music folders or individual songs to the player.
The player sorts the songs automatically by album/singer/year .... using the ID3 tags.

Overall I highly recommend this player.

Sansa e100 1GB MP3 Player vs. Ultra MP3 Player

Strengths: Great Player at a good price. Has nice features; FM radio, ID3 display, LCD and EQ selections as well as SRS 3D, WOW, FOCUS and True Bass. Good sound quality, compact size. Can be used as a flash drive, and can use SD cards to increase the capacity. Uses

Weakness: Cannot make own play lists directly. No FM voice recorder (only a problem if you use that sort of thing).

This is the second mp3 player I have owned. The last mp3 player I owned was an Ultra MP3 Player (SKU: ULT31576) that I reviewed on here Jun 11, 2005. So therefore, I will be comparing it to that in reference to that player.

It has surprisingly good sound quality. Even with the bundled earphones, the sound quality is better than the ultra and gets decently loud without any noticeable distortion. As with just about every player, the included ear buds are more than acceptible, but not as good as they could be. However, they are better than most included with mp3 players including that of the ultra player.

Unlike the ultra player, it is possible to play songs by artist, album, genre, year, new music, and spoken word - either alphabetically or in random order (called shuffle in the option menu). One can adjust or turn on/off SRS 3D, WOW, FOCUS, True Bass, and an equalizer.

Not unlike the ultra, it also uses one AAA battery. Though thankfully, the player seems to last much longer than the ultra. I use a panasonic 780mAh NI-MH, the same battery I used in the ultra and get about 10-15 hours of play compared to only 3-4 in the ultra. This is a huge improvement, of course depending on your LCD backlight settings and battery, type and use of an SD card, or FM radio usage, your mileage may very, but the battery life of this player is among the best.

Also the backlight on the LCD and the size and quality of the LCD screen itself it much better than that of the ultra. All of the mentioned improvements of course make it much easier to read.

I should also note, that this player uses USB 2.0. I mention this because the ultra player only used USB 1.1, and this makes a huge difference in file transfer time.

Overall, I am very happy with the Sansa MP3 player, as its a great player at a good price. And much better than my last mp3 player in every way.

Great little gizmo

Strengths: Easy to use, light, great sound quality. Expandable, FM tuner.

Weakness: USB cable provided is too short

I researched MP3 players starting last week and was originally looking at the Ipod Nano, but after reading about all the problems with the LCD screen on the Ipod I started looking elsewhere. I found this review section and read about the great sound quality of this unit as well as all the great features, expansion slots, FM tuner, free Rhapsody software etc. Then I saw the price, I got mine at Circuit City for $90, and went back 2 days later to get my wife one.

My only gripe is the shortness of the USB 2.0 cable provided, it was only a couple of inches long and since my USB ports are on the back of my PC I had to go buy a 6 ft extension cable so I could physically see the unit during song transfer.

But other than that it works great, I already have it almost full, the software is smooth, easy and fast. The interface is simple, the sound is great.

I highly recomend!

Sort of Frustrating.

Strengths: Small, cheap ($90), FM radio, accepted firmware update.

Weakness: No bookmark or pause for PlaysForSure protected audio books. Restarts book from beginning when turned off.

I bought this because it supports the Microsoft "PlaysForSure" security that my local library uses for their audio books. The problem is that it only bookmarks ebooks from Audible.com which has it's own proprietary audio format. You have to pay to join Audible and then pay to buy their books. Our library ebooks are free but in Microsoft format.

I spent two weeks exchanging email with SanDisk support and upgraded the firmware, only to find out that NO SanDisk device supports bookmarking of PlaysForSure audio, thus you cannot use ANY of their devices to read PlaysForSure ebooks. If you turn off the device, even in pause mode, the audio will start from the very beginning. Maybe OK for music, but bad for a 10 hour ebook.

SanDisk's claims of supporting ebooks only applies to Audible.com ebooks and that is because Audible ebooks contain their own kind of built in bookmarking.

I have exactly the same experience. When I play non-protected WMA or MP3 files, the Sansa e140 will put the minutes played on the left of a "progress bar" and the minutes remaining on the right. When I play a *protected* WMA file (the only kind that my library uses for audio books) these two indicators always read "00:00". If they didn't, I could use them as a replacement for a bookmark by simply fast-forwarding to the last elapsed time.

If I don't find a workaround soon, I'll probably send this one back to the vendor.

Gaiss. so glad to find someone who is a listener of library audio books. I received a e200 sandisk for xmas only to find the same lack of bookmarking - It took almost
40 minutes to forward to 7hr 22min. This is NOT good. If you read this, please email me what device you ended up with. I have checked and checked other sites, libraries anywhere I can to find the player that will work and has a fast forward faster than a turtle. Much appreciation.

SanDisk Sansa e140 1GB MP3 Player

Strengths: Sound, SD Card slot, AAA batteries, can use as flash drive, many play modes, equalizer, SRS. Downloadable books and music.

Weakness: Cannot make own play lists

I have had my Sansa MP3 player for about 2 months and used it extensively while in the hospital (surgeon let me bring it into the operating room) and while recuperating. It is possible to play songs by artist, album, genre, year, New Music, and Spoken Word - either alphabetically or in random order. The default mode is to play songs alphabetically. It will play downloaded books and music (have not done that yet).. It is NOT possible to make your own play groups. My Celtic music is located in Folk, National, World & Instrumental. I want it all together!

It has good sound, all but a few songs were good at the smallest WMA encryption. A little heavier wire on the earphones would be nice (mine broke). The earbuds do a good job of blocking external noise. One can adjust or turn on/off SRS 3D, WOW, FOCUS, True Bass, and an equalizer. The poorly written manual leaves some questions unanswered; however it does help letting one know that features are available. Battery life is not as good as advertised, but I do use the light and other features. Large expandable memory for the price.
Clear plastic case is more durable than I expected.

I like being able to use secure digital cards to increase the capacity, but sometimes I wish I could play just the music on the card. Play “New” seems to use the date the music was placed on the media and not the date the card is put into the player. (folders or own play list would solve this problem)

This is my first player, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I do like it. Hope they update the software soon so that one can make their own play lists.

QUOTE:"My Celtic music is located in Folk, National, World & Instrumental. I want it all together!"

you could edit the m3u tags to make them all the same catagory, such as all folk or make ur own and call them all celtic, i think it is even possible to edit all the m3u tags u want at the same time.

Great Flash MP3 player for the money

Strengths: SD memory slot for 2GB, great sound, FM tuner, AAA batteries, long battery life, WOW srs

Weakness: no FM record feature, cannot use playlists, button delay

I bought the Sansa e140 mostly for the price and expandability. For those two things, I got more than my money's worth. I was leary about the sound quality that I heard people in other reviews complaining about, but found the sound to be absolutely fantastic. No hissing or distortion. Great EQ and WOW srs features. I think it sounds as good or better than any other player I've used. With only 1 AAA battery, it will run for over 17 hrs. That is better than most, and I like that it doesn't have an non replacable battery like the ipod. AAAs are cheap, and you can get them anywhere. It runs off of the USB port when connected too.

I do have to say, there are a few drawbacks to it. No playlists is tough to deal with. There is a firmware update that is supposed to allow some type of playlist, but I had trouble getting the update to load. Also, the buttons tend to have a 1/2-2 second delay that makes it a little hard if you are changing anything: volume, menu items, selects. I wish it had an FM record feature, and maybe a voice recorder, but I can do without.

I compared this to Apple, Creative, Rio, Sony, iRiver, and nearly every other brand of MP3 flash player. I think this has to be the best for the money. I am perfectly satisfied with this player.

Great mp3 player

Strengths: FM,Small and sturdy

Weakness: None so far

The player is really smaller than what I had expected to be.
The display is pretty large and shows the id3 tags. Also you have an option to see details such as the bit rate.
The FM tuner is of good quality and the reception pretty clear. An FM recording option would have been great.
The earphones that come with the player are better than the ones I got with my ipod shuffle, they fit my ears better.
I also bought a 1Gb SD card which doubled up the players capacity to 2Gb which is a lot of music on such a small device.
The armband and protective cover are included in the package and are very useful especially when u are in a gym.

All in all its a great product.

SanDisk Sansa e100

Strengths: Good sound quality, price, comfortable earpiece (includes 3 sizes), single AAA battery, long battery life, SD expansion slot, firmware can be upgraded.

Weakness: Can't change playlist order. Difficult menu navigation, limited documentation.

This is the third mp3 player I have had, and it is the best so far. Very happy with product, I would recommend for purchase. Don't forget to download the latest firmware from Sandisk to get the latest features.

MP3 made easy

Strengths: Easy to use - simple uploads Very lightweight

Weakness: Not clear if capable of organizing songs or playlists.

Sandisk e140 is a legitimate alternative to much more expensive MP3 players - particularly if you are not desirous of many organizing features. Excellent sound reproduction. Comfortable in ear headphones. Very small and lightweight. Plenty of storage capacity for the price. Not clear to me how songs are organized once they have been uploaded to unit.

Sansa 100e 1GB MP3 Player

Strengths: The sound quality is AwesomE, Ease of use is really good, Size is just right. Price was just right.

Weakness: Earbuds are are not very good, Battery life is short

Overall this small but not to small MP3 player is AwesomE. You really get the biggest bang for the buck and its well worth having. The IPOD Nano is a rip off compaired to this player. All though I would buy a different set of earbuds for this player. The set that come with the Sansa 100e are ok but there is much better earbuds out there. If you buy a decent earbud set spend at least $20 min even though you can spend up to $500 for a fenam set of buds. The EQ really works well for this player! It does however take some time to get the EQ and other enhancements set to the way you like to listen to music.

Player is great except for SD card reconginze...

Strengths: Radio, SD card expansion.

Weakness: SD card cannot reconginze the same SD card. You have to switch SD card in order for it to reconginze it again.

Hi Everyone,

Here is my problem with the player and it is GREAT but my complaint is SANDISK is that you have to swtich the SD card in order for it to reconginze the same SD card. Here is my problem.

I have a problem with the E140 series. The problem is I ordered it from a well site and the player was defective in many ways. First, the radio shuts down automatically. I had to replace the player and the replacement worked, so the radio was fine. Then with the replacement there was a different problem. That problem was with the SD card slot. Let me just note that the SD cards works OK on other devices so there is no problem with the card.

I have let's say I have 2 SD cards, which I will call "A"&"B." When I put in SD Card "A," the first time it reads the card. When I pull out the SD card "A," then
Obviously the player does not see the SD card because it is not inside the slot. Then if I put back the same "A" SD card, the player will not Recognize it. If I switch to the "B" SD card and then it recognized it. If I took it out and put back the same "B" SD card and then it does not recognize it. I switch back the "A" SD card and it recognizing it and then I took it out and then I put it back in and it does not recognizing it. The same thing happens again until I
have to switch the cards around. The point I am trying to make here is that You have to switch the SD cards, then it will read them. I spoke to Sandisk about this and they said the product is defective.

So with the second player replacement, I had to call back the site I ordered from. They gave me a refund because the SD card slot problem. So I then went to my local store and purchased the Sansa E140 and still it has the same problem. Then I called Sandisk and was told that the problem I have is still The same thing about the SD card. Then Sandisk said it's defective again. So I went to my local store to exchange it and then the same thing happens with the new product. I had to refund my money because the SD card has the same problem--again. My mom has the same problem with the SD card and her player is a E130 (512MB) and she bought it online form Buy.com. My friend has the E140 1(GB) and she bought it from the same website I bought and she has the same thing with the SD card too. So that's a total of 6 MP3 players that have I found with this problem. I am now without an MP3 player due to this defective SD card problem. I also tried upgrading the firmware and it does not seem to solve the problem. I have emailed to Sandisk tech support and it is not resolving the issue.

I SUGGEST EVERYONE WHO PURCHASE THIS PALYER TRY THE SD CARD FIRST AND IF IT HAPPENS PLEASE CALL SANDISK TO REPORT THIS ISSUE. SANDISK HAS TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. Try this by inserting the SD card and then take take it out turn the player on and then turn the player off and then reinserting the SAME SD card and then turn the player back on. Then use another SD card and then try the same thing and then go back to the first SD card and it will reconginze it.

I am not trying to hurt the company but I want to help the company to make better products.

I have another problem. The Amazon.com player firmware version was 2.0.0.01A. I refunded the player and I went to my local store. When I got the new player, the version was old, which is 1.0.0.1A. I tried to to upgrade the firmware and when I called Sandisk regarding the problem, they told me to try to upgrade the firmware, but it cannot be updated. Also, my friend has the same player, but it is the newest version of the player. She has the same problem with the SD cardand whether the firmware is 1.0.010A or the 2.0.0.01A the SD card does not recongize it.

I would give it 5 stars if Sandisk would fix this problem. Then I would probabbly but the player again if the issue is fixed.

I think that SANDISK should do a "PRODCUT RECALL" to fix this issue.

ALL there E100 series players has this issue problem but when I called SANDISK about this problem they said no one ever had this problem so I suggest you to try this out and report to SANDISK so they can fix this problem.

Thanks

Mike

PROBLEM RESOLVED 4-6-06

OK the problem is resolved now that is great and I spoke to a level 2 tech and the problem and the thing is here you have to go to the menu and then press "Play all" and then the player will see the SD card (the same one) where I said it cannot see it. The instruction did not say that. The insturction in the manual is NOT CLEAR and so I had to go to a level 2 tech and then first he was saying my SD card is defective and IT'S NOT becuase it works on other devices and it's be SANDISK the SD card I am using. It took me 40 minutes speaking with the person and then we figured out what the problem was. When I was saying to him he didn't even understand what I was saying and then he figured out what the problem was. Well I still will give it 4 stars not five because the instuctions is VERY PLAIN I give 5 stars.

The issue with swapping the SD cards is not a defect with either the card or the player. This same thing happens with my Dell PDA. It's very annoying, but unfortunately it is a common problem among many devices that use SD memory, including my Canon digital camera.

SanDisk Sansa e140 1GB MP3 Player

Strengths: good sound quality, compact yet has LCD screen

Weakness: only able to play tracks alphabetically, not by album or artist

This is my first foray into compact MP3 players. Overall, I am happy with the Sansa MP3 player. It has surprisingly good sound quality, even with the bundled earphones. It uses AAA batteries, and last for quite a while. My only issue is that the player only plays songs alphabetically. I would have hoped for an option to play by album or by artist.

An excellent card mp3 player

Strengths: Easy-to-use user in terface, big storage, battery life

Weakness: Some hiss between songs

This mp3 player has a lot of advantages: the easy-to-use menu, the big storage capacity, the long battery life. However the look of it can be improved, and the sound is not perfect. A slight hiss can be heard between songs. The earbuds are ok but not state of the art. A good choice if you have a lot of spare sd cards.

SanDisk Sansa e140 1GB MP3 Player

Strengths: Good sound for the price (if you can use it), SD slot.

Weakness: This one ignores folders and strips away track numbers, making it impossible to listen to classical music which I bought it for.

I was happy with the other SanDisk DAP which I gave away, so I bought this as the replacement. Huge mistake. I wish they could fix the terrible design flaw via firmware update, or I am holding a piece of $100+ junk.

One word: JUNK

Strengths: SD slot. Fits good in hand and good placement of controls

Weakness: Title limit causes jumbled mess with audio books. Slow to start when you change content as it must search through the memory and rebuild track information. Firmware update doesn't work

This is one of those cases where the good physical characters suffer at the hands of poor firmware and lack of support. The first problem I encountered was that I uploaded one of my audio books. There are 9 CDs in the title and the album titles are in the format: "Title - CD X". The problem is that this dog seems to have a 40 character limit and if the album title is longer, then it combines all of the tracks into a single album. So for my first audio book, I end up with nine track 1s, nine track 2s, etc. all in that sequence. So then I tried to update the firmware from the website. It downloads and finds the device, but then when you go to run it, it errors out with some weird message about device not found and "turn off it". JUNK!!!

Good player, Good price .... lowsy documentation and...

Strengths: Good sound quality and features (Surprisingly good sound quality from bundled headphones!!) Expandability via sd slot is a big plus. Upgreadeable firmware!

Weakness: Player is perfect for me exept: It would be great to be able to play music by directories (it's kind of hard to figure out how to tag songs to the player's test) Case is not too good. Awfull documenta

I'm glad to have choosen this player over ipod shuffle which lacks screen and lots of features this one has. Sound quality is great (if you don't use the eq presets and make your own setting) and expandability is great (up to 2 GB SD card) The only problem that i have found is that when transfering from sd card or to sd card it is much slower than when transfering to/from built in mem.
What would make it perfect is the hability to play directories as albums if you want to, because some times you don't have time to make sure files are tagged as the player likes. (Has to be ID3 tag 2.1)
Overall a good player. Best of all.. runs on a AAA batt. so you dont have to worry for recharging (or carry a bulky adapter or having an available usb port to charge it). However a minor drawback is that battery life decreases in about 25% when using an sd card... :(

Sansa e140 MP3 player

Check the firmware version and upgrade it if it's not current. There are a few issues with the user interface that are fixed by updating it. The player works well for my needs, and I like the fact that it takes SD cards so I can easily change an entire library of songs jsut by swapping SD cards.

Hmm.... Not so sure.

Strengths: Expandability, Great Sound, Custom FM Transmitter available just for this model, Very User Friendly,

Weakness: Slow song switching (definitely does not replace the iPOD wheel), very hard to make playlists or organize songs,

Sometimes shuts off without warning and takes a few hours to turn on again. Half the price of iPOD for just as much, if not more, memory (and no stupid software that limits what you can and can't add).

Good Decent player

Strengths: Ability to sort songs by singer, movie or title. Good player.

Weakness: The ear buds that come with it are of low quality.

If you already have a good ear buds/phones, would recommend this player. Good music with good earbuds. I use my sony earbuds, and the music is great. The 1 gb lets you store a lot of songs. The plug & play is good. No need for any additional software. Good buy at below $50.

1Gb MP3 player

Strengths: Great sound quality and very handy

Weakness: Not able to create personal playlist

Good looking and great sound quality. SD card slot is added advantage if planning to add more memory. Very handy and menus are very useful.

It uses one AAA battery. USage of rechargeable batter is handy and depends on the type and use of an SD card, or FM radio usage, your mileage may very, but the battery life of this player is among the best.

Sansa e140 (silver) 1GB MP3 Player

Strengths: Compact, Lightweight, fits in pocket, purse, active wear for the gym! Easy to use, downloads are fast. Good sound quality. Extra storage slot.

Weakness: Volume knob a little annoying, plastic case a snug fit, otherwise not much else.

This is my first MP3 player, I chose this one after some research & a quick look on Consumer Reports but mainly purchased due to it's price. So far it has been easy to use & compact so that I can carry it just about anywhere, wish it came with a better carrying case, don't really like the armband. Otherwise, so far it's exactly what I wanted! I would suggest an LCD clear screen cover, which I did put on mine.
