Great Sound, Lousy Video

Strengths: 14.7GB usable memory, 2.2" screen, Great MP3 sound, FM radio/voice recording, Small and easy to use, Affordable, Good battery life; recharges by USB

Weakness: Lousy video picture quality, Barely adequate still picture quality, FM sound is flat -- like listening in mono, No protective case or memory expansion

I chose the Lyra over other players largely because it had great features, plays nearly any file you can play on a PC, and its software lets you capture streaming video/audio and auto-transfer it into the player. Getting a file on Hulu, Youtube, online TV shows etc is a snap, but like other players the video conversion time takes forever and the converted file is roughly 50% larger than the source material. It also has a graphic equalizer, presets, FM and voice recording, audio book function, and you can delete files from the unit itself. It recharges thru a standard USB cable and the unit tells you when it is fully charged.
What ruins this player is its mediocre video quality. Watching videos is blurry and there are lines through the picture. It's like watching TV through an aquarium. Compare its picture side by side with others like the Sony or Sansa and the difference is stunning. Given a choice I would not buy this player again -- if RCA fixed this problem then this would be an excellent gadget.

As of 11/09 - One of the Best 16GB MP3/FM/Video...

Strengths: Great usefulness, great fidelity, large memory, good video and low cost

Weakness: Can't find any docking station or speaker accessories (blame RCA which makes docking stations for iPods but not for their own MP3 - Go Figure!). Also, this unit must be charged on computer.

Much better than an iPOD for the money. Memory is huge and easy to access if you know windows explorer; just cut and paste into unit's MUSIC folder. Must be charged on USB port of computer (come ON RCA, make a docking station for it!.
