Best netbook I've used yet

Strengths: BATTERY LIFE! I tested on my first day, and it actually goes 10.5 hours on a full charge, as claimed. Small, light, keyboard is much better than my old eee 900.

Weakness: Remember, I'm comparing to a 900... I can't think of any ways in which my 1005 is worse than my 900. Collects fingerprints I guess...

This is by far the best netbook I've ever used. Video playback is good, and only gets better with GMAbooster (download it for free). Shipping was prompt and I have had no problems at all with the product or with BuyDig. Props for including the free 2GB Ram! I'd buy this again in a heartbeat, it's so much better than my eee 900 (cramped keyboard, battery 'leaked' when not in use, and only lasted 2 hours on a full charge). This netbook is better in every way. I looked at lots of new ones, including the T91, and I'm sure I got the right one for my needs (75% business/25% pleasure). I love it, get one today, you won't be disappointed.

Great Netbook!

Strengths: good screen, battery life, keyboard, trackpad, webcam, lots of ports, good size

Weakness: fingerprint magnet.

I have read reviews all over the internet about this netbook. A lot of people said that the computer just flat out didn’t work. About 20% of all reviews said this. Apparently a lot of them have problems with their AC Adaptors. I decided to take a risk and buy it anyway.

Boy did that decision pay off. This thing is great.

I’ll start with the battery life. It is advertised to be able to hold its own for 10.5 hours, but of course that is exaggerated. Realistically, expect 7-8 hours on this thing when you’re on power-saving mode (Fn+ Spacebar scrolls through all of the power modes, there are things like high performance, super performance, power saving mode, and auto power saving.) When I leave it on power saving mode with the screen brightness set down to 50% (still very readable) I can get around seven hours of constant browsing time. The battery is integrated into the design, and doesn’t stick out of the back like on the Dell Mini Inspiron 10v. It might protrude out of the bottom some, but if it does it is only about a tenth of an inch. The battery at the back is very thick, so to accommodate it the chassis of the netbook slopes on a diagonal down to the back, so it is thicker at the back that at the front by a significant margin. I love that, because it leaves room for a very fast processor, and also elevates the laptop into a very comfortable typing position.

On the sides of the laptop, there are 3 USB Universal ports (work with USB 1.1 or 2.0), a slim VGA port (slim because there are no holes to screw it in), an AC Adapter port, an Ethernet jack, and a microphone and speaker/headphones jack, along with a Kensington lock port for optional security. All ports work fine.

The screen is a 10.1 inch glossy LED-backlit display. A lot of people have complained about the glossy screen getting in the way and creating glare, but their claims are wildly exaggerated. Yes, there is some glare, but I will deal with the tiny bit that there is to get a more crisp display. Videos look great on it.

The keyboard is a 92% scale keyboard, which is kind of small. I got used to it in no time, because I’m not a touch typist. I just look at the keyboard and punch with about 6 fingers at the most (I can still get up to about 40wpm).A touch typist might have a bit more of a problem with it all. The keys travel (distance needed to press it to make it go) is very comfortable. The only odd thing about the keyboard is the arrow keys. The left and right are full size keys, but the up and down have been cut in half to fit into the size of one normal key. I think that they should all be half size and sill in the empty space with a handier key like page scrolling.

The track pad is interesting. It is integrated, which means that it is not depressed into the chassis by about a quarter millimeter, but is flush with the rest of the palm rest. It has these cool little bumps spread into a grid work to help you find it when you’re staring at the screen or if you’re in the dark. The mouse buttons are not separate, but rather joined into one piece of plastic with a rocker in the middle. I find this annoying, but manageable.

The webcam is not the best, but at least the other person can see your face when you’re video chatting. The computer comes preinstalled with Skype, so you just push the desktop item and it gets you to make n account, and then you’re set. Unfortunately, it is preinstalled with an older Skype version, so you have to still install the latest. No lag in the Skype program at all; it works like a charm.

A lot of people think that it is necessary to max out the RAM to 2 gigs, but I beg to differ. I don’t think it’s necessary unless you need a bit more computing power, which I don’t. All I need on this is just browsing time and MS Office.

The software doesn’t come with as much bloat ware as other laptops. Unfortunately, It only comes with a trial version of office and Microsoft Works, both of which SUCK. So download Open Office or something like that.

That about wraps it up, except for one more thing. The outer chassis is a glossy finish, so it attracts fingerprints like there’s no tomorrow. Get a microfiber cloth like me, and you’ll be wiping it all down about once every few hours.

That’s all. Bottom line, this thing is the King of Netbooks. Get it, and you’ll be very, VERY happy.

Awesome computer for the price

Strengths: ultraportable, light even with 6 cell battery, nice screen, excellent built in power settings, strong wireless, runs windows xp fine

Weakness: screen hinge does not fold all the way back

ok to be honest this was difficult to find something to put in the weaknesses section! if you are looking for a computer to take on the road, this is it. the led screen and 6 cell battery make it a little pricey, but the extended power you can get is well worth it. since there is no cd drive i just used an external burner we had in the house to install some software, no problems. overall i am completely satisfied with this computer

The 1005HA lives upto all the hype!

Strengths: Battery Life, Performance, Design, Comes w/ a free case, very fast Wireless N card, ability to connect to 'extended' monitor of much higher resolution.

Weakness: The sleek surface is prone to picking up fingerprints; I couldn't find the right bluetooth drivers for Windows 7 (as of yet); Bit costly.

When I bought the 1005HA-P, it came with an additional 2GB RAM module free from BuyDig. The shipping is super fast (delivered in two days after shipping out of warehouse).
When I first used it, it had windows XP installed, and I have to admit, it seemed a tad bit slower than what I had anticipated even with the 2GB RAM. But the moment I installed Windows 7 in it, it ran like a gem! I am loving it!
So if you get the netbook, be sure to upgrade to a 2GB RAM and install Windows 7 in it.
The only bad thing about installing windows 7 RC version is that I still couldn't get the bluetooth driver to work in windows 7. I'm still working on it and hopefully will resolve the issue soon enough. Then I will be able to connect to the internet through my blackberry anywhere I have network coverage from my cell carrier.

The ASUS Seashell 1005HA-PU1X Delivers!

Strengths: 10 in very nice screen; long battery life, nice size keyboard, quickly charges, quick turn on and shut down, ability to load 2GB ram, N280 processor, card reader, wi-fi is b/g/n, webcam

Weakness: Outside cover attracks fingerprints, hard drive is pretty standard size but could be bigger, Windows XP

This netbook really is top of the line for netbooks this size. Nice size screen and very long battery life are the top features and all of this is under 3 pounds. The only shortcomings are the outside cover that will not stay clean and the want for a larger hard drive. I am sure larger hard drives will be standard in the near future. I have not yet really explored the special ASUS tools loaded on this machine so I cannot speak to their usefulness. I hope to load Windows 7 as the new netbooks are coming with Windows 7 standard.

Asus Eee PC 1005HA (black)

THE GOOD: Sleek, attractive design; lower price; amazing battery. THE BAD: Thicker and heavier than the previous model; still near the upper end of the Netbook price range. THE BOTTOM LINE: Asus hits nearly all the marks in the 1005HA, the latest version of its iconic Eee PC, highlighted by a 6-plus hour battery.

Asus Eee PC 1005HA | Black - 10.5 Hour Battery

Introduced soon after the launch of the 1008HA, the 1005HA is a similar netbook device which consists of two distinct models: the 1005HA-M and the 1005HA-H. Based on the same MacBook Air-esque body as the 1008HA, the 1005HA is slightly thicker, allowing for access to the ports not found on the 1008HA. Similarly, it eliminates the other major annoyance of the 1008HA model, its non user-replacable...
