Addonics IDE to SATA converter -- what a gem

Strengths: . Easy to install. . Plug and play (no drivers required).

Weakness: None so far. Another quality product from Addonics.

Get the most from that multi-gigabyte ATA/IDE hard drive you were able to buy at a great price. This converter is a breeze to install, and even the SATA cable is provided.

Good product

Strengths: Easy installation, all required cables are included

Weakness: Form-factor can be a problem in some cases (see update)

I bought this product to use my old 160GB parallel ATA drive with new Dell Dimension 9100. I couldn't use standard "2nd hard drive" bay, because hard drive, if installed there, would be too close to side cover of computer case, and with extra space occupied by converter it was impossible to connect the cables. Luckily the Dimension 9100 has FlexBay, so I installed the PATA hard-drive there, and the rest of installation took only a minute.
UPDATE (summer 2006): I'm not sure if this is a Converter's problem, but about one year after initial installation my computer started to "lose" the hard drive connected through the Converter (couple of times per month). I can see two possible reasons: higher than usual ambient air temperature (it was hot summer, but the temperature inside the computer was still below reasonable threshold) and the design/construction flaws - every time I opened the computer case and check connections "hard drive-Converter-cable", they were a bit loose. Recently I replaced the old IDE-drive with SATA-drive, so I don't use the Converter anymore (but I use old IDE-drive with external enclosure and have no problems with that drive so far, so, probably, the Converter was the source of the problem). Bottomline: I wouldn't use such converter as a permanent solution but it's good for temporary use.

This completes my comments that were cut off:

After buying a new Dell desktop, I wanted to take my secondary hard drive from my old Dell and install it as a secondary to my new desktop. I figured this was going to be easy, but soon found out that my new computer doesn't use those IDE, flat ribbon wires. It has thin ones. My first thought was to buy an external hard drive case to put the old HD in and buy a SATA hard drive. Dell said there are adapters out there and I found the Addonics on Amazon for the same price (~$26) as an external case. The adapter added one extra step to my new secondary hard drive. Voila!

Truly a great adapter!

Strengths: Does what it intends to do! Great price!

Weakness: Absolutely none!

I purchased this IDE to SATA Converter by accident -- while upgrading my system and purchasing a new motherboard, it never occurred to me that the board would not have not even one SATA connection for my hard drive! Frantic, I searched the web and found this converter. Honestly, after installing it, I don't even know it is there! If I need to find a document, etc. my computer does not even hiccup or stall. What a truly little (literally) blessing!
