Died in less than 2 yearsStrengths: Easy to set up, very fast transfer speeds Weakness: Purchased in June 2005, Died May 2007 - RIP Linksys Gigabit Switch I miss the old days when electronic devices were built to last...those slow, ancient 10-base switches are still working decades later. This switch is being replaced by a 3com or D-Link product with a lifetime warranty (because I'm sure it will be needed!) 100% of readers found this review helpful. Have gone through 2 in four monthsStrengths: Good case design for stackability, good performance Weakness: Fan noise, heat, prone to failure I bought both this and the 5-port version. The 5-port doesn't have a fan and is much cooler. For some reason the 8-port generates a lot of heat and must be fan-cooled. 83% of readers found this review helpful. Jun 20, 2006 The 5-port version, EG005W, also has a fan, but runs cooler. The fan in the EG005W I got 14 months ago is just as loud as the fan in the EG008W I got at the same time.

Linksys Instant Gigabit EG008W Ethernet SwitchStrengths: Small and compact Weakness: very noisy and generates WAY too much heat Beware of this unit. It is NOT stackable due to the amount of heat it generates. My unit has basically toasted itself in the two plus months I've had it even though it had more than adequate airflow surrounding it. Linksys Instant Gigabit EG008W Ethernet SwitchStrengths: Fast file transfer, easy setup and usage. Weakness: none I do not understand why some people say this is a noisy switch. Accepable home 1000BaseTX switch
Strengths: Stackable with other Linksys devices
Weakness: noisy fan and runs hot
I upgrade my home network to 1000BaseTX last year. The unit does a very nice job if you can live with the heat. The switch runs hot even with a fan. I had to install it on the top of my network stack so as to not cook anything. The fan started to get noisy about a month after I installed it. I can hear the unit's fan over the fans in my computer. Linksys could have used higher quality fans.
