AWESOME POCKET CAMCORDER! True HD!

Strengths: Great sensor and image processor. Good lens. Easy to use.

Weakness: No optical image stabilization, but electronic Steadyshot is sufficient.

DO NOT believe Cnet and other "reviews'! Just DON't! This is great camcorder for it's size and class, and deserves 5 stars!

So, I download my movies from memory to computer harddrive and later store them on external Harddrive(USB). TIP: Always save original files!
BlueRay Player CAN play movies you took with CX100 (or any other AVCHD camera)!!! Just convert them with Sony PMB to H.264 format by burning videos to DVD-R disk on your computer DVD-Recorder, and you will have your own show. PS: DO NOT just copy and burn original, or any converted AVCHD files to DVD-R - this will be a "Data Disk" and BR Player will not read it. It has to be burned via Sony PMB software as dvd recordable disk, with menus, indexes and etc.

PC users:
- You can Download and install XVID codex for windows. This will make possible for you to play ORIGINAL MTS files in Windows Media player!!! Playback is crappy but maybe OK for quick looks.
- Using supplied PMB software - convert your movies to H.264 format and burn it to the ORDINARY (not a Blue Ray) DVD-R disk! You can Import movies directly from camera, or tell PMB software to get them from folder, where you keep them on your harddrive. After PMB initializes them, it will be able to burn as AVCHD files.
- For sharing with other computer users I like DIVX PRO7 ($19.99) converter to MKV files. Movies a little soft but still high quality when converted to DIVX PLUS HD option

Mac users:
...may need more investments, since Sony does not provide Mac version of PMB. Instead of buying Final Cut Express ($200), I got elGato H.264 TURBO encoder $150(see elgato.com). And is super easy to use. It even can significantly improve video playback, crank it up to 60 fps!!!!! (Go to: Settings/set Frame Rate=60/H.254 Profile = High) Awesome device! Actually, OS X Preview app plays MP4s better than QT. Will wait for next version of iMovie or Final Cut Express, hoping that they will have better support for AVCHD format(s), and ability to burn HD content to regular dvd's, like that Sony PMB software. It is not that difficult to implement after all... 'if they can do it - you can do it!' Right? :) Then, one day affordable Blue Ray burners and disks will be out, and will be less confusion.

After all, if you are old Mac user or person without a computer and you want to keep it simple, the easiest way is to get Sony DVDirect MC5 DVD recorder. You can record regular DVD-R disk readable by BR Player with push of the button... ($150) it works with all(new) AVCHD camcorders.

There is a company mvix, which just started selling nice device ULTIO, which they claim - PLAYS ALL AUDIO/VIDEO/AVCHD formats. And even ISO images of DVD movies!!!! I went to the website (www.mvixusa.com) and downloaded and printed manual and will seriously consider getting one for living room. This thing CAN PLAY NATIVE MTS FILES from CX100!!!! I'm not sure how smoothly, will see. There are 2 options, you can get one with Harddrive inside($170).
.................
ALSO, Sony announced different flash camcorder HDR-CX500 with much more advanced sensor and more features, more build in memory, etc. It will cost 2x more, ~1000. (see camcorderinfo.com). But if you are on the budget - this CX100 is very capable, and it is real HD camcorder, just do not forget to use it max capacity and have full HD recording enabled!

PS: Go to vimeo.com to see video samples, search for "CX100". On HDTV's they will look the same as on these small previews.

Sony Handycam HDR-CX100 (silver)

THE GOOD: Compact and attractive; above-average low-light video. THE BAD: Not terribly great lens; occasionally awkward design. THE BOTTOM LINE: You can tell where Sony cut corners on this compact, flash-based HD camcorder. While its decent, there are better options for the money than the Sony Handycam HDR-CX100.

Sony HDR-CX100

Sony's Handycam CX100 is an able flash memory camcorder that delivers high quality video and an attractive feature set. It's a bulkier and boxier than other flash camcorders on the market, but is very responsive and starts up rapidly. Overall a good value at the price.
