TRENDnet 56K USB Data/Fax/TAM Modem

Strengths: Ease of use, dont need another AC Plug

Weakness: Modem is WinModem based

Honestly spend the money to purchase a higher priced USB modem that has a modem chipset if you are seeking performance and speed. If your just looking to connect to internet while traveling or ease of use, this is an inexpensive functioning product

Not a Voice Modem

Strengths: Data/Fax

Weakness: Voice

Though advertised as such this modem will not work to place and receive voice calls.
From Trendnet's customer service:
Dear Customer,
The extent of the voice capabilities is half duplex and will only receive voice recordings or TAM. The unit does not support full duplex in which the unit will send and receive voice through the unit.
Thank you for choosing TRENDnet.

TRENDnet 56K USB Data/Fax/TAM Modem

Strengths: Easy USB connection. It works fine.

Weakness: The CD-Rom driver was difficult to install at first, but once my second Gateway (Windows 98) finally took it, it was fine.

This modem is acceptable for average use which is all we needed it for, but I would go higher end if you need it for a primary - or an only - computer.

TRENDNet USB Modem

Strengths: Easy install; USB; Nice design

Weakness: No phone out; Winmodem

Nice quick solution if you don't have an internal modem or have one that died. Easy install. All cables and drivers provided. Website maintained w/ updated drivers too. No phone pass through. It's a winmodem so be aware of this only working in Windows.

TRENDnet USB Modem TFM 560U

Strengths: Doesn't suck up a valuable PCI slot.

Weakness: USB connector should have been deigned smaller to accommodate access to nearby USB ports.

Apparently there are 2 versions of this model; the B1 and the A1. My version (B1)connects directly to a USB port where the pictured version (A1) connects to the USB port via a cable. The B1 can create a problem when one needs to use additional USB ports that are on either side and/or above and below the USB slot that this device is plugged into. I have so many USB slots and hubs that this does not pose an issue for me. On the plus side, this doesn't take up a PCI slot of which I only have 2, and they are both being used now. The only reason I bought this was to be able to send and receive faxes. It does the job just fine. For those of you that this could pose a problem for, I have 2 solutions: 1.) Find out beforehand whether its the A1 or B1 before buying it; or 2.) Buy a GE USB 2.0 7 Port Desktop Hub which has 3 ports on one side spaced far enough apart where this will not pose a problem.

Good modem for the price

Strengths: Works like a champ, has a good user interface with plenty of graphics, USB connections means no extra serial ports required.

Weakness: The User's Guide is confusing, the driver update procedure took a few attempts before working, there is no phone-out jack.

The internal modem on my computer died - but I need a modem for fax and transmission of proprietary data. The TFM-560U uses a USB connection. This meant I didn't have to open up my computer and swap out the broken modem. The price for the TFM-560U is about what I'd pay for an internal modem - but it has all the nice features of a USB device: no external power required, easy to install, easy to move if required. The User's Guide was just about useless - but, again - a USB device is fairly straightforward. Installing the updated drivers took a few attempts before working - but once properly installed everything works fairly well.
The only real drawback to this modem is that it has a line-in jack only - no phone-out. This means that when in use, the TFM-560U does NOT disconnect the phone. This could lead to an aborted transmission if I attempt to use the phone while the modem is in use.
Still - for the relative ease of installation, and certainly for the price - I definitely recommend this device.
