Escort Passport 8500 Radar DetectorStrengths: long range, lasers also, front and rear, PROGRAMMABLE, it will even tell you if your car's charging (voltage) is running low! Weakness: none yet. i've heard first hand this was the best- so i got it- best price was thru mailorderbargains - they were the best price by about $20 and they answer their phones right away. no shipping problems & box was well packed. great experience. and they have a unique 30day money back warranty 62% of readers found this review helpful. Escort Passport 8500 Radar DetectorStrengths: works Weakness: should alert before you see police I have owned the escort Radar Detector since the late 80's -It did seem to work fine -- about a year ago I got a ticket for speeding via radar and my escort never went off. I decided to spend the extra 100 on the V1 detector. I couldnt believe the difference. There are two K-band falses on my regular route and V1 picked these up about a 1/2 mile more than the escort and the Laser detects the overhead laser light signs on the highway where my escort never did. To me there is no comparison V1 is in a catorgory by itself-- top dog. Once you use the V1's directional arrows you'll never go back. One last note - my V1 detected the K falses behind me further than the escort did in front of me- that is a feat alone. Spend the extra money and buy the best and dont listen to radartest or speedzones that recommend escort over V1 like I did. To be fair Escort has updated the 8500 to the 8500 X-50 -- I never used the X-50 but I don't want to take the chance. 54% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector
Strengths: Front and rear laser sensors, nice display, many features.
Weakness: None.
This is one of the best radar detectors you can get according to my research, it's a toss-up between this model and the Valentine 1, which many people reguard as the best. The Passport 8500 is $100 less than the Valentine 1, and that was enough for me to sway me into buying the Passport.
I tested it by driving over 1000 miles through California on the freeway, and I got a few false alarms mostly X band, but for the most part I got the warning early enough to slow down, and the detector performed as I expected.
I would by this radar detector again, it comes with a nice case, and for the price I think it has the most bang for the buck. Even the best radar detector won't garentee to keep you from getting nailed for speeding, but they do work to reduce the risk.

I own the 8500 and bought the x50 for my fiancee and we just returned from a 1000 mile trip through some of the most tenacios states for radar traps and I have to say that the x50 was a great DISAPPOINTMENT especially for the hefty price tag. Operating both units side by side for the entire trip my 8500 performed as well as the x50. That is to say that the x50 despite its claims did NO BETTER or no worse than my 3 year old 8500 unit. Both units have the same features with the exception of POP which is not in wide spread use as of this posting. Unless you are color blind or must have a blue display then go with the x50 otherwise save a few bucks and get the 8500 or keep the dough in your pocket and stick with your current 8500 until Passport comes out with a unit that is worthy of its price tag.
