Netgear ProSafe FR114P Firewall/Print Server

Strengths: Very reliable. Seldom requires a reset.

Weakness: No on/off switch. Mac OS X doesn't always work reliably with the print server feature.

We bought this unit to replace a sucky Linksys unit which froze permanently on us. It has worked extremely well ever since we took it out of the box.

My wife uses VPN to telecommute, and this router has never given her problems with her VPN connection.

Since it was installed, we've only had to power it down (to reset it when it freezes) a couple of times. It has been extremely solid, IMO. My only complaint is that my G4, running OS X.3, occasionally has printing problems with the print server feature.

Other than that, I give this unit a strong (but nontechnical) two thumbs up.

Netgear ProSafe FR114P Firewall/Print Server

Strengths: Easy to get working right out of the box!

Weakness: Print Server was a lil tricky

My SMC router died ~ so I ran out & got this! Was really easy to get everything connected and surfing! The router menu was real easy to understand, and it detected the ISP settings all by itself! THe only thing was the print server. I had a lil difficulty getting it to work - but I called the tech support line and was able to speak to someone live in about 2 minutes (holiday weekend too)! Unlike SMC where i had to wait over 30 min. This product is great.....so far!

Essential Firewall

Strengths: True firewall, good throughput

Weakness: none yet

I choose this model primarily because it has a true firewall, and because I was happy with a previous (non-firewall) Netgear router.

I ran Steve Gibson's firewall tests on it (you can find them by searching for "Shields UP" or "Gibson Research"), and it passed all tests perfectly.

I've read other reviews that claim this router has a slow throughput, but I use mine in online games where I would notice this problem, and so far I haven't.

A hardware firewall is essential for anyone with an always-on cable or DSL protection, but all hardware firewalls that I know of, including the FR114P, share one weakness: they only protect against intrusions, not against software or spyware on your computer sending your personal information out. For this reason, I also use a ZoneAlarm software firewall. It offers redundant protection against intrusions, in the event that the Netgear fails to detect an intrusion, but more importantly, keeps my personal information safe.

Netgear recommends against using both the FR114P and a software firewall, but I the only time I've had a problem in using both is in games, and throughput becomes sluggish. Consequently, when I'm playing a game, I shut down the software firewall, but leave the Netgear connected.

The installation process was relatively easy. The only problem I had was that I at first tried installing it without following instructions, thinking I was an experienced enough that I didn't need to. I recommend following each step in the installation exactly as Netgear says.

I recommend this product highly, though with the caveat that I've only had it for a week. I have however tested it fairly rigorously, and I anticipate no problems.

Netgear ProSafe FR114P Firewall/Print Server

Strengths: True Firewall. Security logs. Print Server. Robust case. Ease of use. Kensington Lock Slot. Configuration software.

Weakness: No power switch.

This Firewall router is a little gem.
We have one in our office, serving 3 desktops and a server.
The ProSafe (True) Firewall has SPI and protects against DoS attacks. Ports can be blocked, web sites can be blocked, name blocking of sites can also be blocked. Rules can be created to allow/block services on a LAN IP "AND" WAN IP basis !!
The firewall reports activities to your specifications and can either log to your PC or e-mail you regularly.
The router even auto-senses your ISP connection (fixed or PPPoE for example).
The configuration guide on the PC is extremely good, nice easy diagrams. Simple steps to follow, and direct links to the router configuration web page.
Fully managable from remote sites (if set to), this is a support techs perfect router !!
The print server works like a dream, although we've had problems with beta firmware.
Currently have supplied 3 to customers, who are all happy with this product, and not a single complaint.
I wish there was an on/off switch, so I don't have to unplug it to power off.

This product comes highly recommended, especially for the price range.

Netgear ProSafe FR114P Firewall/Print Server

Strengths: easy to use, has print server

Weakness: unreliable hardware

We both the router in Dec 2002. Jan 2003 it was broken. Negear replaced it. Aug 2003 the new one is broken too. For me this is very unreliable hardware. The waranty dosn't aalow you to have refand or upgrade so it doesn't matter the it is 3 years.

Netgear ProSafe FR114P Firewall/Print Server

Strengths: None that I was able to try..

Weakness: Unreliable Hardware

Didn't work right out of the box. I called Netgear tech support who confirmed that even though the unit seemed to work fine and my modem seemed to work fine ( It was a supported modem as well )that they didn't know what to do, other than to try another unit. I now need to go through the whole RMA rigamoroll with them and the store to get a new one.. I think that I'll just return it for another brand.. Pity, it seemed like a good one too..

Netgear ProSafe FR114P Firewall/Print Server

Strengths: Unknown.

Weakness: Not necessarily a plug and play item.

This may be an excellent unit for some people, but it is far from being a plug-and-play item.

My son and I spent over 8 hours, spread out over a couple of days, trying to network two WinXP computers, using a FR114P router... I don't give up easy, but enough is enough and I am returning this router today.

Note: I didn't have any problem networking five computers (three WinXP machines and two Win98), using a LinkSys work group switch... That I considered to be a plug-and-play.

In summary, I'm not saying that the FR114P is a bad piece of equipment... I'm just suggesting that anyone purchasing this unit needs to be prepared for what might be a real frustrating experience, if they don't have a lot of experience networking computers.

If you took 8 hours trying to network 2 PC's, the problem isn't your router it's your brains. Try contacting a friend that has a small amount of actual knowledge about computers.

Installing a router is not nearly as simple as installing a printer, scanner or other computer peripheral. However, there is no reason to demean the reviewer for expressing frustration over this. Some of us are technically savvy enough to install a router and others are not.

The best way to install a router is to be honest with yourself and, if you don't have enough patience, DIY skills and/or helpful techy friends call a local computer support service (Geek Squad, for example) or buy from a store that also provides installation services.

Solid router, so far

Strengths: More reliable, better connectivity than my previous router; more robust physical construction that many others.

Weakness: Print server installation a little ragged on one computer, no USB printer port.

My previous router was an SMC with a parallel printer port. I was pretty happy with it until it failed a couple of weeks ago after about 4 years of operation.

However, since I installed the FR114P network response is faster, a laptop that had intermittent Web page failures no longer has them, and the Netgear has not locked up once.

I would have given this router 5 stars if it had a USB port in addition to the parallel printer and if the print server installation was more straightforward.

I can understand the frustration of some other reviewers but honestly I don't think the router or its vendor should be blamed. Setting up a small office or home IP network is still not easy and may require some trial and error. I remember hearing that setting up a network is the number one call the Geek Squad gets.

More of the fault lies with the broadband ISPs, in my opinion. Some service providers don't really want you to install a router---they want to sell you multiple IP addresses instead---and/or they view local area networking as an opportunity for them to sell or rent you more equipment, which they may also charge you to install.

Therefore, don't expect much support from your ISP, you need to know where to find what information you need yourself. The router vendors try to help you determine what you may need to know but they cannot address every possibility.

If you are not fairly technically savvy and/or don't have the time, patience and DIY temperament to go through some trial and error and/or don't have some technically savvy friends to help you, I suggest you hire someone to install your router, at least the first time. This should spare you most of the grief expressed by some of the other reviewers.

I recommend this router to anyone who needs a router/print server combo for a parallel printer. Not only has it been very solid in operation, it is built in a metal chassis rather than plastic. This not only makes it much less fragile than most units which are housed in plastic cases, it also improves heat dissipation which should improve the unit's longevity.
