LG GSA4163B Internal DVD-Writer - Black

Strengths: This is a great product. I can not find and DL media yet but for the normal DVD burning it works great and fast too.

Weakness: None yet other than the lack of DL media.

This product was a great buy for me since I needed some way to back up my mp3s and other files that were just to big now for CD-Rs. I did not like the price to well but hey I purchased it from a great dealer.

Good drive--while it still works

Strengths: Handles almost every disc I can throw at it, including DVD-RAM; relatively fast; fairly quiet; inexpensive

Weakness: No Mount Rainier support; reliability questionable

I got one of these almost 16 months ago for $66.99 including shipping. I had been looking for a drive that could do DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, and Mt. Rainier CD-RW's and DVD+RW's, as I expect to be using them all periodically. I could not tell from the specs on LG's website whether it could do Mount Rainier discs or not, so I contacted them; they said it could. They are WRONG. This drive does not do Mt. Rainier discs at all. That's not such a big deal for me at the moment.

I used this drive for the next year or so with no problems at all. If your computer supports it, this drive can let you boot from nearly any bootable disc at all: DVD+RW, DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW are some discs I have tested with this drive. It burns, as far as I can tell, flawlessly (I have personally burned DVD+R's, DVD+RW's, DVD-R's, CD-R's, and CD-RW's with mine). Some music CD's burned with this drive had glitches and 'dead' tracks which I have attributed to the burning software I was using. For the most part, this has been an excellent drive.

HOWEVER, just after the warranty expired (and I had burned maybe 20-30 discs in this time), the drive just DIED. It started with not being able to read certain discs (either CD's or DVD's, I can't remember), and then a few days later, NOTHING. I spoke with LG and they said they would not do anything since the warranty (1 year) had expired.

Basically, it is a good unit, save for its lack of Mount Rainier support, BUT it might not last as long as a burner should.

LG GSA-4163B dual layer DVD+- RW writer

Strengths: Reads and writes all media as advertised. Have not encountered any problems with speed, read/write or bundled software. Also reads dvd-ram which is primary reason for purchasing this product.

Weakness: No headphone jack.

Very good product capable of all functions as advertised. Flawless installation in a Win XP based PC. All bundled software working properly and easy to install....no glitches or sw/hw updates needed. Manufacture website provides excellent support if needed. Excellent value for the price.
