Terrific OneTouch 4 External Hard DriveStrengths: Easy to use out of the box. Excellent price! Weakness: Haven't found any yet. This is a great product. Easy to use out of the box. Top quality for the price. As a first-time external hard drive buyer I love it. I bought this to back up picture and video files from my internal hard drives on multiple computers. I wanted to have all my pictures in one safe place and this one does the trick! 100% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch 4: Sufficient Performance & Good...Strengths: Fast write speeds; includes backup and restore utilities; good warranty. Weakness: Backup utility is somewhat limited (to My Documents & select few items on C: drive. This item replaces an equivalent OneTouch III model that crashed just 13 months after purchasing. I'm hopeful and confident this unit will last longer. Maxtor has increased the warranty on this one from one year on the previous product to five years with this one. It has worked as expected so far... 0% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor One Touch 4 External Hard DriveStrengths: Ease of install and configuration. Maxtor reliability. Weakness: None Simple easy to follow instructions afford a quick & painless installation. Configuring was intuitive using included software. My "Set It and Forget It" configuration has worked flawlessly since initialized 2 months ago. A simple reliable product to backup and safeguard any or all of your computer's files. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Simple, compact and fastStrengths: It's simple with power and USB connectors on the back and software preloaded. The size is smaller than the IDE type hard drive. Finally, it copies My Documents significantly faster than IDE drive. Weakness: The box is black and non-appealing and the software functions are basic comparing to the Plus model. 250GB is considered minimum nowadays. The hard drive shipped with one-touch software preloaded. Once connected to a USB port, it loads itself with the autorun file. The layout is clear and simple and indeed there is only one button you can push, but the button is for copy only, which the Icon on desktop does the same. You can not shut down the drive manually and you can not remove from the computer through the OS. It tells you it is being used. So the only safe way to remove it is to shut down the computer. If the price is right (I paid $63.33 total, it is clearly worthy of the money. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Excellent Maxtor/Seagate External Hard Drive Value
Strengths: Value, Warranty, Setup, 7200 RPM, 16MB Buffer, One Touch Backup, Backup Scheduler
Weakness: Support is located in India
This external drive is a great value. It was easy to set up and file transfers are fast. It has plenty of storage for pictures, videos, etc. It includes a 5 year warranty that covers replacement of the drive, but no coverage for data recovery.
Once you connect the drive via a USB connection, be sure to load the Maxtor One Touch backup software. During the setup, if you use the standard backup option, it will only back up you "My Documents" folders. If you select "customized backup" you have more choices, but it doesn't allow you to back up all files. During the setup, you also have a choice to schedule an automatic daily backup.
One thing you might want to consider. If a folder is located in a path that can’t be backed up using the one touch feature, you may want to move the folder. For example, the digital editing software for my camera was storing pictures outside of the "My Documents" folder. And the folder was not in a path that could be backed up by setting up a "Custom Backup" either. So I moved the pictures to "My Picture" folder, within "My Documents" so they will get backed up. The other option would be to manually drag and drop that file to back it up. I actually backed up my program files that way, since they are not included in a backup.
This drive comes with a power cord and a USB cable. It doesn’t have a power switch, but really isn't necessary. When you power down your PC, the drive automatically shuts down. I find that to be a handy feature.
The only negative so far was when I called the technical support to ask some questions prior to purchasing it. The support staff is located in India and the person had heavy accent. It’s annoying when they can’t even spell your name. I told him my first name is Bob. He asked if that is spelled B O T? Obviously, they don’t even know common US names.
Despite the support issue, I highly recommend this drive because it is a very good value and gives you a quick way to back up all your important files.
