Strengths: Rugged durability. Image quality. Multiple size & quality settings. Comfact flash memory (cheap to buy).

Weakness: Included battery charger is cheap and works poorly. Flash is a little weak.

Starting out my third year with this camera. Haven't had a single problem with it, although the battery charger is tempramental and in jarring contrast to the other high quality Nikon pieces. On a recent trip to Disney I filled up two 64Mb CF cards before the battery gave up. Image quality remains superb and 8x10 prints look better than most 35mms. The 995 makes me look like a really good photographer, which I'm not. I shot some closeups of coins I was selling on eBay and they were fantastic, much better than scans most coin sellers use. I just wish Nikon included a better charger with the camera.

Strengths: Nice sharp images when shooting in the proper program mode with the correct color balance. Extremely versatile in terms of the other manual shooting modes.

Weakness: Power-up time lag and Shutter release time lag takes awhile to get used to and requires anticipation when taking candid photographs.

Enclosed is a huge instruction manual, once used to the camera's functions, the 3-user memory settings are helpful in memorizing the most used shooting scenarios for quick set-up. Internally focusing lense does not stick out like the new Coolpix5000 and others of similar design do. Keep the provided 16mb card as a spare as I bought a good 256mb card with nice image capacity. The built-in, flip-up flash works great for snap shots. The Nikon WC-E63 accessory wide angle lense is indispensible for architectural shooting or group shots, it is extremely sharp with minimal distortion! Set the camera in manual to the "One-touch" focus, keep a spare battery charged and use a CF card reader when transfering images to your computer to conserve battery charge. You'll need to archive your images frequently as ultimately you will fill your hard drive with beautiful images very quickly.

Weakness: Tricky Strap

A great digicam with a great price.
Its build is superb and picture quality is best among other 3.3 mega pixels. Infact It's very hard to take a poor picture than a good one with it! You definitely need more storage (128MB or more). Although you may need an extra battery too if you shoot mostly in auto mode.
I read enormous reviews before I take this one and now I feel I’ve got the right one.
I strongly recommend it to anyone seeking a 3.3MP camera.

Strengths: Lots of options to use though it can be somewhat intimidating. Includes video cable,battery charger,software.

Weakness: Battery is the biggest gripe doesn't take much to run it down. Lens cap is very easy to loose and if using Movie Mode better get a MUCH bigger card.

I've owned my 995 for 7 months. I was somewhat disappointed that we were unable to figure out how to use it until after our son was born. I had the time then to figure things out-some by accident.

I recently had the opportunity to learn more about the camera when my uncle whom also owns a Nikon (885) showed me some things I didn't even know how to get to or even knew about.

Plan to take some time in figuring out how to use the camera.

I have Windows XP which was able to read the camera (and the card) which makes it easy to view the pictures taken.

Strengths: Tons of manual controls and settings. Pictures are very clear and crisp. Downloading is very easy with the bundled software.

Weakness: The only thing that I have found to gripe about is the white balance in auto mode when you are shooting indoors. If you do not use the flash indoors the white balance is off. You get a red tint.

All in all this is a very good camera. The menu and controls can be a little overwhelming at first but once you have spent a little time with the camera it is not bad at all. The camera has a menu setting memory that allows you to save two menu setups so if you do a bunch of shooting in conditions that do not change much you can set up a manual profile and have the camera setup for the shots in seconds.

Other then the white balance problem in the auto mode I have had no trouble. I have emailed Nikon and asked if there are going to be any updates that will address this issue. Hopefully they will look in to the issue.

I would recommend this camera to anyone that like to manual adjustments at their fingertips.

Strengths: Nikon reliability. Excellent lens quality. Superb accessories. This thing sets the standards.

Weakness: Selling mine on Ebay. Should have sold the Coolpix 990 & 95o instead.

If you can find a new Coolpix 995 somewhere in the world.
Let me know. I will not buy a refurbished unit.
When I owned the Coolpix 995, I was quite pleased with the pictures it took. Too bad Nikon screwed up the successores to this camera. They lost me as a customer. I now, direct people towards the Canon Powershot Series.

Strengths: Too much to mention, 15000 pictures and still running perfectly. Macro, BSS, noise reduction, adjustable flash power, body work, picture quality are worth mentioning.

Weakness: None really, 16Mb is too small, bit of a waste. Not relevant these days.

I took a lot of pictures 15000+. The counter was automatically reset for some reason 3 or 4 times. Picture quality is amazing. It's macro function is still one of the very best today. When setting everything manual it's delay is between pressing the button and taking the picture is all but gone. Great for action shots. Because I was so happy with this camera I was very interested to see the newer models from Nikon. Certainly during 2002 that turned out to be disappointing, nothing came close. The honors summary at the top of the page says it all. This camera was the best digital prosumer camera you could get for nearly two years in a very fast moving market.

Strengths: great pictures

Weakness: Difficulties with batteries and adapter.

Once I figured out how to use the Nikon (it took somewhat longer than with other cameras I've used), I got great pictures from it... Unfortunately, the proprietary batteries that the camera uses all seem to stop working after a few months, and the camera did not come with an ac adapter - these difficulties have made this an impractical camera to own.

Strengths: Awesome zoom and image quality. Vibrant colors. Very easy-to-use menu.

Weakness: LCD screen reflects light terribly (being in shade is a good idea)

The zoom was excellent. I took three photos of my backyard, zooming in more each time: paing.com/pics/coolpix... ... The top left is no zoom, top right is half zoom (i don't think it was full 4x optical zoom, but maybe it was) and the bottom left is the full zoom (optical and digital combined). The grass becomes less colorful as I zoomed in, but the quality is still amazing considering how far away that farm house is.

The video-out is great quality. I plugged the cable (yellow composite) into my WinTV USB (Hauppauge video capture card) and the recorded video (using VirtualDub) was much better than the QuickTime.

When I took pictures of the parade, I noticed that there was a slight (barely noticable) blue tint. Using Photoshop, I went to Image :: Color Balance :: and used +15 (more red), 0, -30 (more yellow), and then used Auto Levels.

Strengths: LOTS of features

Weakness: LOTS of features (slightly intimidating learning curve)

Summary: We evaluated 9 digital cameras for our publishing company and this model was considered one of the top 3. This was my personal favorite once I figured out the controls. Excellent picture quality, even when making enlargements. To see an actual image taken from this camera, you can go to the web site below (These are NOT compensated endorsements). Strengths: Macro shot.

Very good pictures of macro view. Refurbished product is good enough. like new. Highly recommend those who want to take pictures of baby! The best of the amateure level of digital camera. 3 mega pixels are enough to develope paper pictures.
Swivel is very convinient to take pictures from any point.

Weakness: Propritary battery.

Cool product which gave me the quality and fun to use, great menu modes to take control with. Going well with the wide angle len. Love it at all.

Strengths: Fantastic Pictures

Weakness: Have to use external Flash Bracket with wide angle lens converter.

This is my third brand of digital camera. If I do upgrade it will be another Nikon. I like the ease of use and the wonderful pictures this camera produced right out of the box. I bought mine 10 months ago, and like anything else in electronics, I paid a lot more than the $400 to $500 that people are paying now. I would pay that price again today, if I had to, to get this camera. It's worth it. I have used other cameras belonging to friends and they don't hold a candle to my Nikon.

Strengths: The picture quality is awesome. The versitility is very good and the ease of use is uncanny. Downloading is supereasy when you plug the usb in a Windows XP computer. No software needed!

Weakness: None as of yet

I bought the camera through Digital Imaging for 439.00 and with no problems (THX Brain x234). We went to the Phila. Zoo and took picture that would amaze you even after we printed them out. The color and quality are one of the best! The camera is an excellent addition to our family! Cudos to Nikon!

The Coolpix 995 takes nice pics. More features, especially more STD. memory would have made it better. The price I paid was OK, @ $475.00.

Strengths: The 4X zoom(35-152),the swivel body, non protuding lens during zoom, and a very easy-to- understand manual. Also a very solid feeling camera. Nice grip.

Weakness: Menu may take a while to learn but well worth the time spent.

I was taking pictures within moments of taking the 995 out of the box. The AUTO setting is fine for most situations, but there are many other settings to grow into as you experiment. I would recommend this camera to anyone wanting to take quality shots without being limited by a lack of functions. The manual is so concise and practical that anyone can follow it from the basic beginning to the advanced section at the end. Excellent in all respects.

Strengths: Great pictures. I'm abandoning color reversal (C-41) film. This camera has a lot of features that makes it easy for a beginner to get excellent results and a professional get the *right* results.

Weakness: I'm still shooting my landscapes with slide film.

I was very surprised with the picture quality, even if this is a Nikon. Everything about this camera is quality. I use mine inside with my Nikon SB-28 Speedlight and the results are better than with color reversal film.

Strengths: Rotating Lens,Nice sized LCD screen. Able to view in thumnails.Strange but neat design.

Weakness: Sounds like it is going to break down, Battery life, no infrared port like some of HP's cameras.

Over all this camera is the Lexus of all cameras. This is my first camera & I will continue to support Nikon. I also have a Kodak 3900, the kodak gets a thumbs down. The 995 is worth every cent.

Strengths: easy to use. super quality. no "gimmicky features" to break.

Weakness: battery charger broke. software for pix is difficult to install.

I was on the phone with tech support regarding the software. You will probably need the new driver from the net. Also there is not one comprehensive software program for picture management-several small programs to juggle to manage, edit, and store your photos. Other than that, the camera is fantastic.

Strengths: Worth of a 5-star rating. Very cool outlook; terrific quality of pics. Especially, it supports my kingston 256m compact flash (Type I) card. In other words, my 995 can hold up to 161 pics in fine qual

Weakness: The lip of the lens is not so well designed. One is very easy to scratch the lens by chance openning up the lip.

It's very worth buying at a price of $470 or below. Maybe Nikon is intending to sweep all the competetors ( even coming from itself as well) of it's newest model coolpix 5000, by lowering all the prices of its products , even including E995. Therefore, if you are not sensitive about having a newest model, regarding the Quality/Price ratio, E995 is still no doubt the best buy at present time.

Strengths: An overall incredible digital piece. Excellent array of options for those in the "Point & Shoot" field or the innovators looking for a bit of range.

Weakness: I only have two gripes: 1] the EN-EL1 batteries begin discharging soon after leaving the charger - if you travel, bring the charger. 2] The ability to select a 2048x1536 JPG is not present.

All in all - I would recommend this digital-camera for those who are looking for new territory. I previously owned the Olympus C3040 - the Nikon 995 and the 3040 go head-to-head in abilities but the Nikon 995 comes out on top even offering a better cosmetic look and feel.
I know a few other close friends that own this camera and they were very pleased from day one and to this day, it's very hard to pry it from their hands - just to take a look !

Strengths: Great image quality. Lots of flexibility if you want to really study the in-depth manual but the "Auto" mode is pretty competent too. As a novice, I read the manual about 5 times & learned a lot.

Weakness: When u screw on the wide angle, the viewfinder and the flash are dead meat....gotta get a big ol' flash and mnt it on an "L" brkt. O.K., but then the ext. flash's auto zoom must be set manually!!!!

I am impressed with the camera overall, but its hard to imagine why it doesn't fully support an external Nikon flash. I also find it tough to see the Monitor outside when using the W/A adapter. Miss a lot of the features a SLR has.....yeah, I know, I should save up for a D1.

Strengths: Versatile, lots of controls for the pro or semi-pro.

Weakness: Doesn't come with A/C adapter & batteries don't last too long.

I love the fact that the camera knows when the the lens is rotated upside down and compensates!

Consider extra batteries, adapter & possibly a flash reader.

Strengths: Easy to use. Takes great pictures. Can erase a bad picture before it's finished saving. Can easily download pictures to computer. Nice to be able to display on TV for everyone to see.

Weakness: While it comes with good software, we had a problem and had to call customer service to get it installed. The movie mode takes a little getting used to, need to work on exposure to get a good movie.

All-in-all a great camera for the money. I had no problems using it and was able to take a good picture even before reading the manual. Would definitely purchase again.

Strengths: Great pictures, flash is a nice upgrade from the 950 as well as the reduction in overall weight.

Weakness: A little cumbersome compared to my powershot s300 :) A bit difficult to learn for a novice like myself.

I must admit that I am more of a point and shoot novice user of this camera though I'm trying to learn how to use as many features as I can. One issue that I have noticed with this camera is how long it takes to focus compared to other cameras. It just flat out appears to be slow compared to my s300 for example. On the plus side though the menu is great and not too difficult to learn plus unlike the 950 that connected via serial port this camera uses USB. What a difference.

Weakness: the max f stop is aroud f10, i wish it could go to f22 or so. would love to see rear shutter flash sync added through a firmware upgrade. kinda noisy when it zooms or focuses. tiny 16meg card included

this camera is really great...i went from an early model 480x640 camera to this one so i think the battery length is great, i picked up an extra anyway and by the time one runs out the next is ready. i would like to see a bigger memory card included. also i wish they added rear curtain flash sync- that would be awesome. the automode i dont really like on this but once you go into manual settings the camera is amazing. if you are interested buy it before the rebate expires. i wish it did was store b&w images as b&w...it saves them as RGB. Better flash integration with nikon flashes - i have a sb28dx...i wish all the features would work with it such as infared focusing, rear curtain sync etc.

Strengths: Rotating lense. This is invaluable to those who need to take photos on a table (Sugeons shooting patients etc.)!!

Weakness: Barely small enough to fit in a pocket so it really has to be carried in a bag.

I love this camera. I am a plastic surgeon and use it daily. It is not so great at close-up flash shots but has an incredible macro lense!! You can take a photo of a hair follicle. So far I have not had any trouble with the camera. I did buy a 128mb memory card from lexar and have found it much more convenient than the smaller cards.

Strengths: Quality of image. Capabilities. Manual override. Interchangeable lenses. Self-portrait mode - WAY COOL!

Weakness: No hot shoe. Does not take standard batteries.

I had the Coolpix 990 for 6 months then sold it to get this instead. The flash above the lens is an improvement. This camera is easy to use for a novice (had my boyfriend using this to photograph his Edward Gorey art collection) and multi-functioned for the advanced photographer - it lacks for nothing I could want.

I am a professional graphic designer (web and print). This camera has been INDISPENSIBLE! I am also a professional digital photo retoucher and can tell you that the images need little, if any correction for print.

I also bring this camera to the ad agency I work at and have used it for ads which have appeared in major magazines (Rosie, Family Circle, Marth Stewart Living .. etc.)

This camera is worth evey penney. What's more, tech support is available 24/7 via an 800 number - something rare these days. And their tech support people are really knowledgeable and patient.

If you buy additional flash memory, they recommend the Lexar 10X series. Anything less than 10x just won't keep up with this speedy little camera. I am hoping they will lab test the 12x series soon.

I couldn't recommend this camera highly enough. It will please you each and every time you go to use it! Way to go Nikon!

Strengths: Great Picture Quality, Macro mode tops in of all digitals. Love the swivel and the ability to add lenses

Weakness: White color balance off some on inside shots. Not much else wrong with it.

I highly recommend the 995 camera. It has the best natural colour of any dc in it's class. The swivel is an interesting addition to have.

Strengths: Outstanding photo quality, easy to use in point and shoot mode, great applications suite.

Weakness: Uses battery power like there's no tomorrow.

Compared 5" X 7" prints of my pics with prints of images from a commercial source; cannot distinguish any difference. That is, great quality.

The applications suite lets a photographer do just about everything with digital images that he or she could do with film images in a well-equipped home lab, and a lot that would be impossible. And this is before the pics are even downloaded into the waiting arms of a computer's photo software!

Buy a couple of extra batteries, though.

Strengths: The point and shoot gives great pictures. Full options suite for the professional.

Weakness: Incompatibiliy with the IBM microdrive. Finicky about which CompactFlash cards used. Battery hog.

In the short time that I have owned this camera, I've taken the best photos of my life. The point and shoot works great, and if you don't want to go automatic all the way, the LCD monitor gives a great preview of your shot before you take it. READ THE MANUAL and buy a tripod. The camera is quite a complex beast, and like any good camera with shutter speed and aperture options, a tripod will save you a lot of blurred photos. Always have at least 2 recharged batteries on hand, for the use of the LCD monitor drinks up the power.
The USB connection works great, don't even waste your money on a USB card reader, spend the money on the Nikon cable instead.
