Hitachi Deskstar 60GXP Hard Drive - 60GB - 7200rpm -...

Strengths: Great seek time, Great buffer margin, very quiet and smooth running, excellent price!

Weakness: None that I have found.

I have two 60G 60GXP's and they are sound running. Very nice! I am looking to buy two more for a RAID 0+1 configuration, just waiting for the right price again. These are the BEST out in my opinion, with one exception being the 120GXP's. Definately get these if you want a sound HD.

Hitachi Deskstar 60GXP Hard Drive - 60GB - 7200rpm -...

Strengths: Stable, Reliable, Fast, Economical, Consistant

Weakness: Heat

I've been using building systems for quite awhile and had gone through times where I used each of the various manufacturers, but now I stick with IBM drives. Out of 10 or more drives that I have used from IBM over the last 4 years I have only had to replace 1, and that was my fault.(I had two drives too close together) I currently have two systems using 4 of these drives each in 0+1 raids and have very good performance with this setup.

Hitachi Deskstar 60GXP Hard Drive - 60GB - 7200rpm -...

Strengths: Good, Fast, Quiet

Weakness: It crashed after 2 months of general use!

My drive crashed on me after 2 months of use and I had to send it back on warranty. Maybe just that drive? I got it replaced and my new one works great!

Hitachi Deskstar 60GXP Hard Drive - 60GB - 7200rpm -...

Strengths: We have 8 of these drives (sizes ranging from 20GB to 80GB) in various servers and have not had any problems. Outperforms similar Western Digital drives we have.

Weakness: They seem to run a little hotter than similar Western Digital drives. Our systems have several fans so this is not too much of an issue.

I have read about problems with the 75GXP and 120GXP drives, but have not experienced ANY problems with the 60GXP drives. The drives are always spinning (we don't configure to power down during periods of inactivity), do get a lot of use, perform well (better than our WD drives), and are quiet (much quieter than the 2 Maxtor drives we have). All of our servers go through a Sisoft Sandra burn-in for 1-2 days as well, and we still have not experienced a failure.

My biggest complaint is the naming convention. The first 60GXP drives we purchased were 20GB. The person making the purchase assumed that they were 60GB capacity based on the name.

Overall I would not hesitate recommending these drives.

Hitachi Deskstar 60GXP Hard Drive - 60GB - 7200rpm -...

Strengths: Large storage

Weakness: Junk, Junk, Junk

This is the second IBM HD ihave recieved since I made the mistake of buying it last year. First one lasted 9 months. IBM gave me a HUGE amount of flack about doing an 'advanced' RMA (where they will send you a replacement and you send the junk one back), but finally did (after 3 weeks of waiting). two months later the second drive is crapping out. Called again, same bs. Say they MAY not send a drive out to me, but will ask to. I won't ever buy another IBM drive again. I don't mind them going bad, I do mind the crappy support. Say what you will about WD but I have NEVER (or Maxtor for that matter) had a problem getting a bad drive replaced in the warrantee time frame).

Hitachi Deskstar 60GXP Hard Drive - 60GB - 7200rpm -...

Strengths: Fast drive, very quiet operation.

Weakness: None that I can think of.

Can't say much about it's longevity because I've only had it for 5 months, but so far so good.

It's one of the quietest hard drives I've ever owned, and has very fast access, even with 55 gigabytes of it filled up.
