Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Works great with MS Streets.

Weakness: Location on map is not exact. Maps are no longer supported by Cobra. No software updates in the future.

The included mapping software seems to be an issue with this unit. It's always off. When connected to a laptop using MS Streets & Trips, the map location is correct. Cobra has indicated that no map updates will be available.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Cheap! Accurate position, speed measurement!

Weakness: map not accurate, no turn to turn direction....

The first thing about this unit is that IT works as any GPS device and it is cheap.

I travel to Colorado for a ski trip last week. It works fine outdoor. Picks up signal and does what it suppose to be. Tell me my location etc. etc.

The not so good part is that the map comes alone with it is almost useless. It did give some info. But when I try to navigate. It gave "off course" warning almost every five seconds.

The software to connected to PC is horrible. It is a pain to load all the maps to the unit. Theoretically, if you have a high capacity SD card, you will be able to load whole US map into this unit. However, as you will find out, it is almost impossible for the slow speed of transferring (serial cable...!) and not friendly user interface. Maybe someone has some suggestion about the software usage. I just find it is annoying to use it!

Another thing about this is that the signaling keeps dropping. Not to mention you got nothing indoors.!

Well, for a price like this, I am somewhat satisfied.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Position Accuracy, Ease of Use, Satellite Connection

Weakness: Map software, PC Interface

If you plan to buy this GPS for vehicle navigation, you will most likely be disappointed. While you can download street level maps to the Cobra 1000dlx, it does not speak to you or navigate turn by turn directions. It can do this when connected to a PC and the PC is running a navigation application. However, if you plan to use this for boating or hiking, it would definitely serve your needs.

I found the Cobra 1000dlx to be accurate to about 10 feet while hiking. The interface on the device is easy to use and the buttons are intutive and comfortable. The device will quickly locate satellites (although it took a while the first time).

The real disappointment with the Cobra 1000dlx, however, lies in the software and interface. The GPS came bundled with Rand McNally Streetfinder. The first problem is that the program seems to be about 2 or 3 years old and I haven't seen any way to update the maps. Then, there is the serial cord interface you use for downloading street level maps to the GPS. It took me a while to realize that I could type in the correct Com port number during the transfer process to get the device to connect. It defaults to Com 3 and does not provide any other ports in its drop down menu. The transfer process is unintuitive and slow but it does work. You can use a larger SD card to store more maps.

I found this gps at Circuit City for $80 after rebate (it was on sale). At that price, this is a great gps for hiking, boating, etc. If you plan to use it for car navigation, you will want to spend the extra money for a device that tracks and announces your routes.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Good signal reception, fast location update and good price.

Weakness: Poor bundled software, outdated maps, and no USB support.

We bought this unit because of its affordable price. Compared with equivilent Garmin products, this unit is quite a bargain. The acquisition of saterllates is pretty fast, usually within a minute once you take it outdoor. It is reliable in bad weather conditions as well, unlike a PDA based Garmin GPS we used before. Location update is fast and accurate. We are happy with the GPS part of the functionality.

As to software, we are quite disappointed. The PC map software is horrible, the worst I've ever seen. The included maps seem to be very old, sporting some rather ancient street names in our town (fun to teach kids local history with it).

Probably the weakest point is that it only support serial communication with computer. In today's standard, this is rather ridiculous. Most of new computers don't even have a serial port.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Fast satellite acquisition, decent size screen, backlit keyboard

Weakness: Inaccurate (mapping software??), short battery life, but most of all NO SUPPORT

This is all about expectations and how you use the GPS. For me, for what I paid, I think that this was good value for the money. Let me start by saying that I already had a Magellan Meridian, and by comparison in most areas this compares favorably. It is certainly faster in satellite acquisition than the Meridian. I also like the backlit keyboard, and its also got a little bigger screen than my Meridian does. On the down side, I do find this unit to be consistently inaccurate (not by much - maybe 1/2 block or so). The battery life seems to be on the short side (in spite of the "up to 22 hours of life in Save Mode" spiel). The BIG issue, however, is that this product is not supported AT ALL - Neither by Cobra, or by Rand McNally for their Street Finder software (which, by the way, if infinitely inferior IMO to MapPoint). This means NO backup if you run into trouble or have questions. I personally contacted Cobra with a question and, although they did return my email (which is something, I guess), they were decidedly unmotivated to provide an answer (just said "de-supported - click!). I have heard that those contacting Rand McNally got an even less satisfactory response. So don't expect any updates to that software, which is specific to the Cobra. There are also no user groups out there - at least that I've been able to find. And I've looked. This is VERY useful, since these groups are usually were I've been able to get real answers to some of my questions about my Garmin.
All that being said: IF you can buy this for less than $100, then hey, go for it. But don't think that you're getting a Garmin Roadmate 700.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: PC connection with included cable,Large backlite lcd screen, easy to use

Weakness: Inaccurate maps, very difficult to acquire the satellites (at least in where I live), short battery life,

I bought the unit three days ago. Its performance didn’t impress me at all.

First, it takes the unit up to 15 minutes to acquire the satellites even if the sky is quite clear. Indoor satellite acquisition is impossible.

Battery life seems pretty short. I used two 1800 AA rechargeable batteries, and they only last for a couple of hours. High capacity rechargeable batteries and an in-car charger are recommended.

The maps uploaded from the included Rand McNally CD’s are not accurate at all. Usually its 1-2 blocks off. The unit keeps giving me the ‘Off Course” alert even if I m driving right in the target street.

Over all, this is an OK GPS. Good for camping but not for giving driving directions.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: very accurate, position you within upto 5 meters

Weakness: it'll be better if the screen is colorful

This is the first time I've bought the GPS receivers. I think it is a great product and worth the money you paid. Big display, easy to use. if it's colorful display, it will be better.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Good value for price

Weakness: Location given by GPS is not accurate. No turn by turn directions.

I got it for $ 90 from CircuitCity and at that price it is really cool. The software on the GPS is not very good. Problems include it doesn't show you the accurate position on the map and also there are no turn by turn directions. It works well as just a GPS receiver when you use it along with your laptop.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Unit is light weight and easy to use

Weakness: Would be nice if unit had voice prompts and color screen

Unit is light weight and easy to use. Batteries last a long time. Great for camping and rafting (since it is pretty much water proof). Unit is easy to hold and use. It is a little confussing to install software though.

Cobra GPS Deluxe Travel Portable Navigator with ASAP...

Strengths: Cost, I bought it for 50% off plus $70 rebate which made the final cost to be $80.

Weakness: The uploading the desired map onto Cobra is soooo slow.

This is my first gps and for the price, I am very satisfied with it. However the speed of transferring the data from my pc to Cobra gps 1000 dlx is so slow, I wish it is a better way. Also the mapping s/w which come with it had many errors (wrong street names) around where I live.
