Good camera, except for its noise(s)

Strengths: high quality video, particularly in well-lit environments. The internal microphone pics any audible sound. Great menu and too easy to use!

Weakness: the internal microphone pics the clicking noise of the hard disk. Video quality reduces drammatically in indoor environments (i.e. in lower light conditions)

Sony needs to eliminate the clicking (or ticking) noise of the camcorder's hard disk! Perhaps the microphone needs to be isolated better from the hard disk because it is easily audible during the playback of videos, particularly if shot in almost silence. The external microphones compatible with this camcorder are also monotone (which is a shame since the internal microphone is 5.1 Dolby Digital). It is also necessary to improve video quality in low light conditions.

Otherwise the camcorder is fun to use and very practical.

where is the software?

Strengths: very good hd video, hdd based camcorder

Weakness: no editing software, usb port on dock, average battery life, digital version of steady shot.

I'm really frustrated using this camcorder even though the captured video and audio is very good, but what can I do with it when I can not even edit it. I'm an amateur videographer which makes a lot of mistakes. I really want to edit out the unwanted scenes. Why can't sony just place usb port on the camera is beyond me. let's hope they'll do a better job on the next low-end hd hdd camcorder.

HD video

Strengths: Very small, light and easy to use

Weakness: Not very good picture in low light

This is a great camera in well lit conditions such as outdoors but the video get grainy as the lighting goes down. Does not come with editing software! Does not come with an HDMI cable! Adobe does not recognize it because it uses usb instead of firewire to transfer HD video. My old HDR-HC3 had a firewire port. No viewfinder...the HC3 had one. Love not having to deal with tapes and the battery seems to last longer.

HDR-SR5

Strengths: Very sleek and compact. Nice touch screen, easy set-up and use. Night-shot is great.

Weakness: Quality is mediocre in low-light. Having trouble getting HD quality.

This is a cool camera in looks and simple to use. It's ready to go once you charge the batter...which doesn't last all that long. You need to buy a back-up right off the bat.

Night-shot works great. The touch screen is very nice and menus are easy to use.

Camera should have ports so you don't have to dock it in its cradle to upload all the time.

You need to record outdoors in the day time to get the clearest picture...or at least have lots of light.

Don't bother with this if you are going for an HD camcorder. It's not all that great.

Great Camera with Amazing Video and Audio...

Strengths: 1080i output w/ dolby 5.1 capabilities. Nightshot plus is spectacular. Smooth slow mo recording is quite cool. Simple and intuitive menu system. Plenty of recording space. An amazing camera.

Weakness: Make sure you have AVCHD capable editing software. Battery length could be a little better.

All in all, the Sony Hdr-Sr5 is an amazing deal for amateur video makers who want their videos in high def. Would be amazing for home videos as well and putting the video on a computer or burning a DVD couldn't be any easier.

Sony HDR-SR5

Strengths: Good camcorder. Light, portable, good resolution

Weakness: Battery is not good enough. Software needs to improve.

This is a good camcorder. It is very convenient for outdoor use. It has a very good resolution and high capacity. I would like to recommend this kind of camcorder.

Sony Handycam HDR-SR5 (40GB)

THE GOOD: Neat face index feature; bundled dock. THE BAD: No eye-level viewfinder; no wind filter; no USB port on camcorder, just on bundled dock; annoying touch-screen interface; cables not ubiquitous yet for mini-HDMI connector. THE BOTTOM LINE: An uninspiring entrant in Sonys HD camcorder lineup, the Sony Handycam HDR-SR5s video quality and performance simply dont deliver for the price.
