Poor design choices
Strengths: Sharp quality that I have come to expect.
Weakness: Sharp quality that I did not expect.
I am very disappointed with the choices Sharp made designing the PG-MB66X projector. After 7 hours of troubleshooting and talking on the phone with Sharp technical support, the poor quality display was tracked down to the method Sharp uses to adjust for keystone. It is not a problem with my equipment as was vehemently claimed at one point. Neither is the problem caused by Windows fonts. Adjusting the display effects settings may appear to help a little, but the real problem remains with the keystone adjustment method. This projector adjusts for keystone by re-mapping the image to a trapezoid on the square display matrix. When the image is re-mapped, vertical lines - either boarders or character stems, become thin and sharp in places when they map directly to pixels, or fat and fuzzy when they are spread between two columns of pixels. This causes some characters to appear normal and others to appear bold. Vertical lines appear to modulate between sharp and fuzzy. After 7 hours of work, the result is a passable compromise, but only because Sharp would not take back this projector. If you do not need keystone adjustment, this is a very nice projector. If you do need keystone adjustment, look someplace else. This one is not up to the quality standard I had come to expect from Sharp. If I had it to do over again, I would look for another projector vendor.
