A handy little saw

Strengths: Easy to handle

Weakness: Blade availability, not a reciprocating saw replacement

The Bosch 1640 FineCut saw is a handy little saw to have around for smaller projects. I purchased it initially for its advertised use ie. trimming moulding for new floor installation. I have found it to perform very well indeed for this application. In addition, I have now used it to saw basically anything where I don't feel like hauling a larger saw around. I would never use it for precise miter cuts however. This saw operates nicely and seems to be a high quality Swiss tool. Finding extra blades may be an issue because you will need Bosch blades made specifically for this saw. Whilst I'm not too bothered by this some may find it limiting. Additionally, don't expect the FineCut saw to replace your heavy duty reciprocating saw. It is not for demo work! Overall I recommend it highly to both the professional and homeowner alike.

Great Tool

Strengths: Very handy for multiple uses

Weakness: No carrying case

I received my saw yesterday and put it to work right away. I first used it to cut door casing off at the floor to allow for ceramic tile. I also used it to cut off the ears on a window stool and also to cut some base board and crown molding off to allow for some built in cabinets. I am very pleased with the tool and have other uses in mind. I am a general contractor and custom cabinet builder and plan on using the saw for installations and also in the shop. It is a very handy tool and reasonably priced. Hats off to another good product from Bosh. I highly recommend this to anyone in the construction or cabinet work force. A must for the tool box!

Great Saw and a Huge Timesaver

Strengths: Smooth, precise cuts. Reversible blade. Powerful motor and solid construction.

Weakness: A bit on the heavy side, "special" blades.

The Bosch 1640VS saw is the tool I needed to do flush cuts easily, smoothly, and accurately. The saw is powerful!!! It cut through door frames w/o a hitch. I used it to cut the bottom of the frames while installing wood and vinyl floors. (I was using a flush-cut handsaw but after several doors I decided I needed something better to cut in tight spaces next to walls.) As mentioned in a prior review, it is a flexible tool that can be used for other cutting jobs; and I have.
The saw came with three blades, which are very easy to change. They securely lock in place (it only locks when the blade is installed properly) and are solid when the saw is running. The variable speed adjustment is recessed and located near the cord entry. Haven't really had a need for it yet, but it's there if I do.
The saw can be maneuvered easily to avoid banging into the baseboards while making my cuts. The saw-stroke is fairly long, so I learned to start my cuts farther back than I anticipated to avoid hitting the boards. I do wish there were more blade choices available as with a reciprocating saw. But, that's not a major issue at this time.
Bosch has a miter table that can be used with this saw, and it may be nice for making small, fine cuts such as picture frames.
Overall, this is one great tool to have around your home.

Great power hand saw

Strengths: easy to handle; easy to change blades; can switch blades from right to left

Weakness: Hard to find replacement blades

You can cut absolutely flush to the surface with this saw. I had to cut a protruding stud to get it out of the way and this did the trick very nicely. I could not get a hand saw blade started but this saw with the curved blade let me cut into the stud from the side. It will come in handy for all those hand saw jobs. It is about time someone invented this sort of thing in a power saw. Bosch did a great job in designing this so it is easy to use and control.

Bosch Finecut Power Handsaw 1640VS

Strengths: Power, Precision cuts, Extra long power cord, Easy blade changing

Weakness: None

The Bosch 1640VS saw is a type of tool I have been looking for a long time. I have many different saws but nothing that can perform like this one. I can do flush cuts easily and accurately. The saw is powerful enough to cut through any material I have used it on to date. I have used it to cut out a rotten jamb for replacement for my garage door. I have used it to trim around a new French door I put in my house. It is not just a specialty tool because it can be used in a multitude of ways to cut various materials. Another plus with this saw is an extra long power cord. Most of the times I do not even need to bother with using an extension cord. The saw blades are very easy to switch out and lock in tightly for a precise cut every time. I can think of very little ways that this saw can be improved. One idea might be to have, if possible, saw blades with a more rounded point where you can cut into a piece of wood larger than the cut stroke of the saw without banging the front and/or back of the blade into the wood. However, there are ways to maneuver the saw while cutting to avoid this. Also, the speed of the saw can be varied with a speed dial adjustment. Overall, this is one of the best tools in my home workshop.

Very handy tool

Strengths: Form factor

Weakness: Specialized blade

This tool is what every person needs when trimming the door jamb to accomodate a new floor job. Just place a piece of scrap flooring next to the jamb, place the Finecut saw on it and cut away! No need to worry if a hand cut Japanese saw is cutting out of alignment.

Admittedly, this is a fairly specialized tool. It does work in a miter box, so making corner cuts in trim is a possibility. However, its small size also means that one can grab it and make a cut whenever one is needed, whatever it may be.
