Sony Net MD Walkman Digital Music Player - MZ-NF520DStrengths: Sound quality is great!! Lasts for hours on play time. Weakness: The software is a little on the difficult side alot of info to read about and does not load all my mp3 music. I have had a Sony Md before and loved it!! However I did not like the software with this one. Again it had a hard time loading music on my disc and playing it back because it could not recognize the file type which does say it can do that. All in all it took too long to download any music and fustrating I would buy a Sony again but not this model.. 66% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Sony MZ-NF520DStrengths: Lightweight, easy to use, interchangeable battery. Weakness: Frame is made of plastic. Great player/recorder for someone who is new to this technology. Wanted to get away from the monopoly apple has over the mp3 industry. So decided to get minidisc. Uses only 1 AA battery and lasts for over 40 hours. Headphones that are included sounds great. Player allows you to adjust bass/treble. Great buy with no regrets. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

A good product, but ...
Strengths: Very good audio fidelity and volume; each mini-disc hold 6 hrs of music if recorded in ATRAC3™ Audio; supports MP3, WMA and WAV, etc.; small and light; rugged construction.
Weakness: Feature-control design; battery life while transfering music to mini-discs; somewhat confusing software.
Overall, during the 8 mos. that I've owned this player, I'm pleased with it in most ways, and -- knowing then what I know now -- I would buy it again.
But, the design feature-control mechanism on both the player and the 'remote' is poor: (1)it is too easy to skip to the next (or previous) track instead of fast-forwarding/reversing within the current track; (2) it is ridiculously easy to turn on the radio-feature by mistake while trying to clip the remote to your shirt pocket; (3) it is too easy to turn the player on by mistake while it is in your pocket, thus using battery-life; (4) the remote is necessarily small, but the control-buttons on it should be bigger/easier to use.
Also, Sony should have designed it to hold two AA batteries, instead of just one. Furthermore, it should have been designed to use a 'complete' USB-port (instead of the 'mini' version) so that the usb port would power the player during recording sessions, instead of using up the battery power -- I now use re-chargable batteries to mitigate this problem). Lastly, I very much like that an FM radio and the US-weather-channels were included in the design, but why wasn't AM included?
On the 'good side', the mini discs hold a lot of music, and they're small, reliable, inexpensive, and re-recordable. The weather-channels and the FM radio seem to have good sensitivity, clarity, and fidelity. The unit as-a-whole seems to be well made, reliable, and sturdy. It is light and quite easily carried in my pants pocket, altho' it is a bit heavy to put it in a shirt breast-pocket. It has enough volume that I can turn it up when there is competing noise. Listening to classical music is where it especially shows the audio fidelity built-in to the design.
