Good Enough

Strengths: Compactness. Quality.

Weakness: More than I needed.

This is my first foray into the world of MiniDV tapes, so I can't offer as much of a comparison as if I had been using them for years. Compared to my old 8mm tapes, however, this is a considerable step forward. The tapes are less than half the size. They only hold half as much material (60 minutes on standard play, or 90 min. on extended play), but that's OK -- I'd rather have the ability to shove a spare into a pocket or slide it into a small pocket on my backpack. Clarity is good, no problems with reliability, etc. My only negative reaction -- and it is purely a matter of my private situation -- is that I don't know if I really need five tapes. I plan to download the video data to the computer immediately after shooting, and I have a laptop. I will rarely shoot two hours of video in a day, and even if I did, I would normally be able to download it and free up those tapes pretty quickly.

Good buy for amateurs

Strengths: Good video quality, price.

Weakness: Some "digital skips" in the video every now and then.

I bought these tapes mainly for the price and previous usage of panasonic's mini dv tapes. They always worked pretty well, always accepting that they are not professional quality.

Great Tape!

Strengths: Picture quality Sound quality

Weakness: None that I know of

Great tape!
I've used them for two baby showers as well as the birth of my child!
Low light can be a problem for some video cameras, so be careful. However, with the proper light, images are clear and crisp with these tapes!
It's been recommended that you buy the same brand of tapes as your camera brand (and not to mix tapes) and I have a Panasonic PV-GS35
Overall, great product!

Unbeatable value for a solid basic product

Strengths: The price, baby!

Weakness: Nothing really, but be aware that this is a lower grade tape than, say, a Panasonic MQ series tape.

This 5-pack bundle offers excellent per-item value, especially if purchased from a site with free shipping. I ended up getting these tapes for less than 2 bucks a piece. Also, with the exception of Sony tapes, all DV tapes are pretty generic -- this entry-level product is pretty much the exact same tape as an equivalent bottom-rung tape from JVC, Maxell, or whoever. (You may have already heard that DV tapes are all dry-lube, except Sony, whose wet-lube tapes are totally different... not necessarily better, mind you... just different. Pick one type and stick with it, and make sure you don't mix wet and dry lube tapes in the same camera because the wet and dry lube residues can combine to form a gluey gunk that will clog your heads, and you'll need to clean them, which is an abrasive process that shortens your head life). Nonetheless, even through this is a pretty generic product, I feel safer buying a Panasonic branded tape because Panasonic is an excellent, reputable, professional company that wouldn't risk its good name on a crummy product. I do believe that you'll get a slightly more reliable product (higher coercivity, less chance of drop-out, sturdier mechanism) if you buy, say, a Panasonic MQ series tape -- but you'll pay more too. MQ tapes are more like 4 bucks a piece. Personally, I use MQs for my professional projects which I shoot on expensive cameras, and I use these EJ series tapes for my on-the-fly home movies of my kid playing around and being silly, which I shoot on a cheap JVC camcorder.

Very good MiniDV Tapes at a great price.

Strengths: Good quality of video recorded, Less noise, Great Economic value (Price per tape).

Weakness: None for the product. However, the packaging should be improved.

Quality of the video recorded on these tapes is very good. I have compared these tapes with SONY and JVC MiniDVs for the same Camcorder. I cannot confirm (since I have so far used 2 out of the 5 tapes in this pack), but in SP mode, it actually records more than the promised 60 minutes.

The packaging should be improved - It hardly provides any protection to the tapes inside.

With this product available at some retailers at about $12, each tape comes out to be only $2.4 !! Thats a great price for a MiniDV.

Weakness: None.

I have been using these tapes for years and have never had any problems with drop-outs, or mechanism malfunctions. It is a high quality tape and an excellent value for the money. I highly recommend for any mini-DV application.

Great Price for Good Product

Strengths: Value

Weakness: Not the highest quality, but good quality

As another reviewer pointed out, 5 does seem like a lot but I rather have too many than not enough. Great starter pack for new video camera owners. Professionals might need a higher quality tape, but amateurs will have a hard time justifying anything else.

By the way, it records up to 60 minutes in SP mode or 90 minutes in LP mode. Hence the 60-90 minute label. Have had no problem using them in my Canon ZR700 video camera

Great value pack minidv tapes

Strengths: cheap price; good quality

Weakness: none that I know

I got these tapes for my Canon Optura S1 camcorder. I've heard that it's better to use the same manufacturer's tape as the camcorder. But the price of these Panasonic's is unbeatable. I think Panasonic is just as good as Canon, right?

Anyway, I've been using these tapes for about one week now, and haven't found any problem yet. Good overall performance. The video and audio quality are both good.

I have seen other's review saying that it's not good to mix different brand tapes. As these Panasonic ones offers good enough quality and reasonable price, I will probably stick with it.

A very good value minidv tapes, recommended to those amateurs like me.

PANASONIC 5PK MINI DV TAPES - Reliable and Cheap

Strengths: Very good price, Reliable performance.

Weakness: none

I use these Panasonic mini dv tapes with my Panasonic GS35 camcorder. The performance is very good, and the price is even better. I have been using these tapes for a week now, and I have not seen any dropped frames yet. These are an excellent value for your money, and I highly recommend them to be used for day to day home video.

Panasonic Mini-DV Tapes

Strengths: GREAT TAPE - NO DROP-OUTS, INEXPENSIVE

Weakness: NONE

I HAVE BEEN USING THESE TAPES EXCLUSIVELY WITH MY SONY MINI DV CAMCORDER FOR ALMOST 1 YEAR WITH NO PROBLEMS AND NOT A SINGLE DROPPED FRAME.

Thouugh I've heard Camcorders getting messed up if you switch between tape brands but nothing happened for me when I switched from Sony to Panasonic. Thus I can say that the lubricant which Pansonic uses on its tapes are probably compatible with other good brands such as Sony.
