I will never buy LinkSys product again

Strengths: None

Weakness: frequent connection drop and automatic reboot; expensive and not worth at all

I bought it and used it for 1 week before it started to drop broadband connection and automatically reboot. Sometimes, need to power off before getting broadband connection again.
Asked its customer service and replaced a new one. The new one have same problem after 3 weeks.

Weakness: limited firewall features

I got this gateway at zero cost " bundle with a low cost digital camera and I was very skeptical about it at first. I turned on, loaded the latest FW and .. it is up since !
Performance wise, I did not see any bottleneck with this toy , whether accessing my CD server or uploading/downloading from the internet. I feel that my cable provider (rr) is the bottleneck capping my traffic @ 2 mbps

I'd wished to have more firewall options and more than one DMZ machine, Hey at 0.0$ who could complain !

Strengths: PPPoE support, DHCP server, excellent firewall protection, easy setup

Great product! No problems with it whatsoever. Built-in PPPoE support allowed me to remove all PPPoE software from my machine to use my DSL. Great speeds, easy to configure using the web browser. Occasionally have to power-cycle the unit but that's only because of infrequent problems with the DSL line. Nothing to do with the router itself.

Strengths: Simple 'out of the box' use. Easy to configure.

Weakness: Support. Build quality. Length of warranty. Replacing in warranty.

Purchased abour 12 of these for customers over a year ago. Sent them out and had plenty of glowing reports.
This router is simple to configure, taking mere minutes. It has plenty of port forwarding features and similar, that allow most applications to work through the NAT.

I have received 7 of these routers back as failing. Mostly customers complained that after a year they were rebooting every other day.
In two instances these routers failed within the 12 month warranty period. Technical support appeared very helpful, providing information on firmware updates. Once it was establised that the router was failing and firmware updates were not fixing this, they became extremely unhelpful.
After a very, very long time trying to get RMA's, both routers, which failed within a month of each other, were sent back, in perfect condition having been sitting on a desk. Both routers were returned, unfixed. The reason was that they had been worked on by a non-linksys engineer, shown by the voiding sticker being damaged. This was not the case as I personally inspected the routers for damage when visiting the customers.
The next 4 routers failed after the warranty period. Ports stopped working, or traffic from the WAN connection would not route to the LAN.
The 7th router is beginning to fail now, requiring to be rebooted every couple of days, and port #3 not working.
Customers report the 5 other routers are working fine.
I would not recommend this product, or manufacturer again.

Weakness: Setting up closed and open ports could be made easier to do or have better documentation.

I'm quite pleased with my purchase of the Linksys router. After a minor installation difficulty, having to call twice to get a more knowledgeable customer service rep that knew more than "reboot, reset, reboot" I got a service rep that had it up and running in 15 mins, and also helped me set-up the ports I wanted open and closed.
For under $40 with rebate, and a year of problem free usage, I wouldn't hesitate buying another or recommending to friend.

Strengths: Good price and simple setup.

Weakness: Quality

I've had three of these devices. the first ran flawlessly for two and a half years until a lighning storm took it out (along with two NIC's and a PC power supply). I replaced the Linksys with a new one which only lasted for six months when the WAN port stopped working. The LAN side still works but there is no Internet connection. Got an RMA# from Linksys and sent it back. Got new "tested" unit and it doesn't work. Same problem. I'm done with Linksys.

Strengths: Was easy to set up, but then again most similar products are equally so.

Weakness: Reset button doesn't work, nor does this product.

We had this unit installed for about 1.5 years, actually. It would freeze on occasion and need to be reset by unplugging it. When it was not frozen up, it seemed to function well, until one night when I tried to print some PDF file, and it froze up permanently. For the life of me, I cannot understand why the PDF file was any different from the hundreds of other files this unit carried to my printer, but I guess it was.

Anyway, we rang tech support and they were totally useless. After trying a couple of things to unfreeze it, the guy finally told me "you'll have to go and buy a replacement unit." Not another Linksys, certainly.

We went with a Netgear unit instead, and it's run for a year now, and has been far more reliable than the Linksys unit ever was.

My advice: avoid these Linksys units like the plague.

Strengths: cheap price easy to setup great if you use dsl or slow speed connections

Weakness: does not work well in high speed cable you will loose a lot of speed

spoke to linksys they know that this router has a problems with some cable modems. Linksys will not fix this problem better to pass on this model and go with befsx41 a much better product that will not slow you down. Linksys tech support will run you around and then they will tell you that there is nothing thay can do.
Do you self a favor and if you use high speed cable PASS on this model.

Weakness: does not run

i had one which lasted a couple of years then a mild! lightening storm fried it (but not the modem nor the 3-com nic)
bought a new one, it did not work out of the box, but linksys did not give me a new one they sent me a refurbished one, this one did not work; stay away from this, get a d-link or 3-com or something else which works, stay away from linksys nic's too, they screw up your system, six out of eight of mine went bad

Weakness: everything, Everything, EVERYTHING!

Do not buy this router! We're running 3pcs, and a web server. This router hangs all the time. First, linksys said, go exchange it. Then, Linksys told me to put a 20 foot cable between the modem and the router..that did absolutely NOTHING! Then, they said put a switch between the router and modem. That works, but I had to spend $20 on a switch. The endless power cycles, drove me router insane. There is still a 4 second delay before each web page loads up. Don't buy this router! PS: I had to reset the router twice to post this very message.

Strengths: Great Router for multiple computers/print devices. Excellent auto assignment of IP addresses to devices (DHCP handling) with Cable/DSL connections.

Weakness: Appears extremely susceptible to everyday voltage fluctuations - high and low. Be alert for User Guide addendums/corrections.

3rd replacement! Only equipment that appears to become "trashed" by everyday power fluctuations. Finally gotten smart - will connect to dedicated surge protector/uninterruptible power source and see.

Strengths: Ease of installation, performance

Weakness: none

I use this to attache 4 computers to a cable modem. It was easy to set up and use. Performance has been outstanding with no apparent slow down due to the 4 systems.

I have seen cable modem performance as high as 450 KBps through this switch and have had multiple downloads runing with no problems.

I also run my laptop to my office using a nortel VPN software package with no problems.

Have recommended this and other Linksys products to many friends.

Weakness: very unstable and short lifespan

Worked great for about 3 months then the fun started. It now it loses the connection every few hours sometimes sooner. Support tells me to just reset to defaults and start over. This works for a matter of a few hours then loses it’s connection again. A waste of money.

Weakness: SLOW, incomplete troubleshooting section of manual

Router slowed my connection speed from 800kpbs(before) to 100kpbs(after) - 8 TIMES SLOWER?. I called the "Jeff Levy On Computers" radio show on KFI here in Los Angeles, and he flat out told me that Linksys was no good. That he beleives they sell inferior products to make the money back on tech support. I also searched on the web for "linksys + router + slow", and came up with scores of posts written by people with the same problem but no answer. LINKSYS IS NO GOOD. I'm returning it today and will just by a Netgear or Belkin and save the headache.

Strengths: Common firmware upgrades allow excellent features. Port-forwarding by range, DMZ, MAC address cloning, much more.

Weakness: Occassionally does not save changes. Definitely not a large issue.

This is a very good product. I have put it to the test for over 16 months, and it's always performed. Very easy operation; I have people coming over and plugging in to it, they're up within a minute. DHCP is a very nice option, MAC address cloning, firmware upgrades common, good LED's, basically a small computer with lotsa network connections. I highly recommend this.

Strengths: GOOD LOOKS, STACKABLE WITH OTHER LINKSYS MODULES. SILENTLY WORKS ALL THE TIME..JUST BLINKS AND GOES ON RUNNING

Weakness: I WISH IT WERE A LITTLE HEAVIER..IT LIKED TO TIP OFF MY DESK UNTIL I STACKED OTHER LINKSYS STUFF ON IT.

I USE AOL 9.0 SE AND HAVE NEVER HAD A MOMENT'S TROUBLE WITH THIS UNIT. AOL ALSO HAS ADDED "PORT-MAGIC" TO MANAGE THE LINK, AND GUESS WHAT? IT WORKS GREAT! I AM TEAMED UP WITH A WESTELL WIRESPEED EHTERNET MODUM, AND RUN XP-PRO. AFTER USUAL HAND SHAKING AND A LITTLE WIZARD WORK, ALL IS VERY VERY GOOD. I HAVE HAD TO CALL TECH ONCE OR TWICE, ONCE AFTER MY POWER SUPPLY FAILED, AND THEY WERE GREAT IN TELLING ME HOW TO RESET THE UNIT. I USE VERIZON, AND ALTHOUGH SOME SAY THEY HAVE TROUBLES WITH THEM AND AOL AS A BYOP, I HAVEN'T HAD ANY TROUBLES AT ALL. GOOD UNIT..QUIETLY WORKING AND BLINKING AT ME.

Weakness: You cannot use AOL software to access tthe Internet (BYOA)

It is easy to set up out of the box and inexpensive. It was bought because Verizon, the DSL provider, provided limited customer support, very limited and spotty to get good support. Getting technical support from Linksys involves a lot of holding time and a lot of patience.You have to be very lucky to get someone who understands what is needed. And if you use AOL, don't even waste your time - it will not work.

Strengths: Inexpensive, good brand name, easy setup

Weakness: ummmm...It has a wall wart instead of a simple standard plug-in

I've used a few of these and loved them. Very simple install, setup, and no problems with any of them. I still use them. Great GUI, simple and plain to understand. Linksys is a great brand, I've used their products for years now.
I guess the only thing I can think of to improve it would be to lose the wall wart. They're annoying. Simple plug and play.

I don't even remember how long I've had it, 5 or 6 years. NEVER has any problems. Even in lighting storms. Of course my systems sit behind a pure protected (seriously protected) power supply.
Never updated firmware. Everytime I check, no firmware revisions listed. If you can find a ver3 I'd grab it.

only good if are not a gamer and don\'t care about...

Strengths: sets up easy as long as you are only using computer to surf the net

Weakness: exceedingly difficult to use with games, could just be my set up, but D-Link 4100 plugged in and worked for everything out of the box and it's blazing fast.

After having an old Linksys router fail last year, I thought I would replace it with an upgraded version of the same - only wireless.

Since my networking expertise is minimal, I followed every instruction to the letter. The result was a mess. After messing with it for a couple of weeks, I decided to go back to what I "knew" would work, a Linksys Wired Router/Switch the new version is Model: BEFSR41.

It worked, but had fits with games and some other applications. After going to the site and upgrading I was in the forums trying to figure out how to make games work with it, when I found that there were MANY people with the same problems I had. The thing just quits, there are some software flaws that are "identified" but no one is fixing them. I did download and install the firmware upgrade, but some games would NOT run.

Goto the forums for the full story. Gamers stay away from this modem- works adequately for email.

Don't waste your money!

Strengths: Easy to use, before it breaks.

Weakness: Cannot withstand any power fluctuations.

It seems ALL of my Linksys equipment (router, hub, and switch) lose ports each time we have a power outage. After replacing some of this equipment, I decided it was worth the extra $100 to get a nice APC UPS. All of my network equipment is now on the UPS, but after a power outage, another port on my Linksys 'junk' seems to fail. Funny thing though, I have an old 8-port SMC hub (from 2000, over 6 yrs old)) which has never lost a port yet. I'll never buy another piece of Linksys equipment again.

Great firewall

I have had this for at least 3 years at home and used a number of them at work. Never had any problems. The default settings out of the box make it easy to setup and provide excellent firewall protection for home use. On rare occasions (1/yr maybe) I have had to reset. I believe this would be an ideal firewall for most home users.

Weakness: Unable to connect to DSL when it worked for a while but then stopped and can not reconnect.

Bought this router in April 03. Setup quick and worked for three weeks. Stopped connecting to DSL and nothing would fix it including support. Returned router to Linksys (cost $10 shipping) and received "Certified" router. Again setup quick and worked well for four weeks. Again, stopped connecting to DSL and nothing could fix it. Well, I figured out how to fix the issue. I bought a D-Link and it's worked perfectly for months with absolutely no drop from DSL. Setup was very quick for the D-Link. I will never buy a Linksys again and will not recommend them.

Strengths: Reliable, fast, bulletproof. A real bargain! Does exactly what it says it does. Very easy setup and its automatic redial for PPPOE DSL connections guarantees an always-up DSL link.

Weakness: Very limited on DHCP, it only lets you use 192.168.1.x subnet. I left DHCP on the server because I didn't feel like reconfiguring several applications and shortcuts. Why confine you to that?

Really an awesome product. I have not had to reboot it yet, and keeping the PPPOE connection going on our very sporadic DSL line had been a problem for the previous 2 years. I haven't heard a peep since we got the LinkSys.

Manual is written with the home user in mind - no information for the advanced user. Technical support (UK) is excellent - first company in a long time who's actually phoned me back - and answered my questions.
Routers are routers and they just do a job, but this is one of the more impressive - and it looks quite good.

Strengths: Easy to setup and install. EXCELLENT support information on their website. Rarely have to reset it.

Weakness: Have to hit the reset button but very seldom but this happens to ALL routers at some point.

If you aren't familiar with networking, then you're likely to have problems with ANY network device of this nature. However, be patient and ask questions if you have the resources available.

Strengths: Inexpencive - Easily configurable - Fast - Easy to Troubleshoot

Weakness: It does not have a physical reset button on it - It does make white noise (this could be a benifit in the right environment) - DMZ Confusion

This is a great, low priced router (by no means cheap in quality though). The router is easy to use, fast to connect, and is very easy to troubleshoot (I recommend it to home clients who I sell routers to). The only problems I have had with it is using a DMZ server for gaming on a DHCP network, and it does make white noise (enough to be annoying if you sleep in the same room as the computer).

Strengths: It's a full-featured router with lots of good functions, and it's incredibly easy to set up.

Weakness: Could add more info for those with more technical networking knowledge.

I HIGHLY recommend this router, even for those without any networking knowledge. Their documentation walks you through everything, and configuring it with the HTML interface makes it easy.

Strengths: This router has some of the best NAT that I have been able to experiment with on a consumer router. It has a very robust set of tools, while still being easy as pie to use, I've had it for 2 years.

Weakness: Just be sure to have the latest firmware you can get.

Contrary to some of the other reviews I have seen here there was no decrease at all in speed tests with or without the router on my cable connection. I tested at 2.5mbps before, and 2.5mbps after, regardless of the number of clients connected as well. I think it was in those people's netowrk configuration that they have the issue. If you are looking for a cheap router that has a fast switch built in, but at the same time looking for some advanced networking features this is a perfect choice. From a professional point of view, a VERY good product.

Strengths: Low price. Supposed to be a good product, or so says Macworld

Weakness: Worked little over a month, then died. WARNING: don't believe glowing reviews from Macworld, Linksys products are NOT made for Mac users. You will not get support from Linksys if you have problems.

Macworld has become the ulimate corporate shill - looks like if a manufacturer buy ads in the magazine they'll get a great review review, they'll use the product in a step-by-step article - even if that manufacturer treats Mac owners like lepers. With all the problems I've had with this product, and as many times as I've tried to get help from Linksys, the response has been base line: one email confirming request, then no response. If you are a Mac owner, I suggest looking elsewhere for a router made for Macs, or at least supported. And if you're a Macworld reader, read between the lines on anything you're considering buying from a Macworld review. Make sure you can get support before you pay your money. Guess "let the buyer beware" is still true, and never trust so-called authorities, like Macworld.

I've used this product for the last 2 months. I connect 2 desktops and a laptop without and impact on speed. I even run 2 other wireless connections through one the computer on wired port on the router. I have not noticed a speed deficiency at all. I wonder what are those folks that claim they have issues with speed while using this router.

Weakness: Novices may have a harder time -- based on the ratings here, it might be handy to have a geek in your pocket when you do the install. Some knowledge of TCP/IP is helpful!

Very strong product, and the price is unbeatable. I've had this for a couple months now and am very happy. I was using a Linux-based self-installed firewall before, but maintenance was an ongoing chore. With this little firewall, I can just use the web-based interface and not have to worry about the state of the internal firewalling software, or whether the latest rev of RedHat supports my mods. My dad and brother-in-law also use this -- excellent product, excellent value.

Strengths: Firewall security plus PPPoE gateway handling and lockout controls make this rouer ideal for ADSL users.

Weakness: None that are significant. Build quality could be better, but it offers excellent value for the money.

I just configured this router a week ago and after taking 20 minutes to realize the PPPoE (login) connection is handled by the router, it has been smooth sailing. This is solid product with excellent feature set. I cannot speak to reliability or build quality, but for under $80 street, this has got to be one of the hottest PC accessories out there. Many of my friends have used this router for a year or more and they swear by it. I noted that reviewers appear to fall into two camps - those that figure it out, and those that don't. It is unrealistic to expect phone support for a product in this price range.

Strengths: Very easy to install, great features for the price. I was up and running in less than 10 minutes.

Weakness: None, simply follow the instructions provided in the manual.

Really liked this product a lot. The price was right and the feature set is great. Two main features are the ability to share my DSL connection with my kids and get the NAT firewall protection. Good stuff!!

Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch

Strengths: Looks, initial features

Weakness: Quality, company customer service

Initial quality and operation is good. Quality is poor and I've had two units break down each with the same problem. Trying to get customer service to help is an exercise in futility. Most recent problem, I've tried for 3 days so far and no luck in getting customer service to respond. Company service is very bad as is the quality of the product.

Strengths: 4 ports, supports 10/100, admin window viewable through web browser.

Weakness: need to reset sometimes.

This is a decent router for small home networks. when i bought it, it was probably for twice the cost. I like the feature of being able to access the admin features through your web browser. Occasionally, the network tends to lock up, but I'm unsure whether if it's caused by the router or the cable modem. I haven't had any real issues with it that would prevent me from purchasing it again. I'd recommend it if you need a simple router.
