Just what the doctor ordered

Strengths: Keeps the bills low, nice display

Weakness: Feels a little cheap; programming complex

This is just what we needed. It has a pretty nice feature set. It’s really dead simple to install. It maintains and monitors the temperatures with what – so far – appears to be very good accuracy. The “home” feature is nice, putting the heat/a/c on its max setting when you are home during times that were programmed for absence. There's also a long-term override for vacations and the like that works just fine.

And for those that don’t follow – this device allows you to program hot/cold periods and down periods so that you are not running the a/c or heat when you are not there to benefit from it. That portion of the unit works very well. It does feel and look a little bit cheap -- not sure I like the AA battery thing. It has to have AA batteries in there even with AC power to get the backlight to work.

I’d read somewhere that the timer section popped off so you could sit in a chair and easily program it, it was described as a 'remote' feature. That's not quite the case. You can stand there and program it, or pop it lose from its frame and sit to program it. This is also one of the benefits of the AA batteries. It doesn't remote the changes, though. You have to click it back on the wall for the program to be implemented. Additionally, when you do this, the back electronic board is exposed, so it is less 'remote-like' than expected.

Works like a charm. I’m not sure what more money would get you: It keeps a pretty accurate reading for temps, it’s easy to program with a good “indiglo” display that’s quite bright. Maybe more bucks would yield a less toy-like appearance. But I’m satisfied for the price.
