Strengths: Clean sound, nice power output, plays CD-RW, Does not skip, Fairly easy to use, different screen color options, Effective Equalizer, BBE MP, DSO, AUX input, SUB output
Weaknesses: MP3 titles dont scroll continuously, No Attenuation button on unit, "Loud" setting in a menu, screen changes color not buttons, single AUX input, no WMA support, some multisession discs don't play
Summary: 2004-12-28 18:21:00 I was looking for an MP3 player to replace the original cassette/Radio player in my car and between Pioneer and Sony, I decided to go with a Sony because of their Performance-Appearance-Features balance for the price. The pioneers were good but a little over my budget for the same features.

Ok so after looking at a lot of players I settled for the 5700.

This player is great, it plays all kinds of discs, CD-R, CD-RW, Audio CDs, MP3 CDs, even pretty scratched cds and discs recorded with multisessions (though I had a problem playing discs with more than two multisessions) and I have so far had no problem with skipping whatsoever. It However does not play WMA files. Since you can always convert from WMA to MP3 this was not such a big issue with me, but you might want to consider this if you have alot of discs with WMA music.

The sound from this player is also very impressive and it made my stock speakers sound like I've never heard them before and I was amazed! Sound is loud enough and also very crisp and can be fine tuned using the Eqalizer which has presets and also can be custom set and each source can have its own different equalizer setting. The DSO is just great, so is the BBEMP for MP3s, they really enhance the music to sound even better. The Loud setting is also very useful for listening to music at low volumes, though here is one weakness, unlike most players, in this one the Loud setting actually has to be enabled or disabled from a menu, too much hassle! SUB outputs are a plus point, though I'm not using them, but its nice to know that it is available if ever I need to add a sub. Also useful is the AUX input to add extras like CD changer or XM Radio, however, since there is only a single AUX input, you can only connect one piece of equipment, so if you have a changer, you will have to disconnect it to connect something else there.

The tuner is also superior than my stock or others I have heard in other brands, the reception is clear and you can set 18 presets for FM stations and 12 for AM stations, and name each preset according to the channel name for easier and better channel surfing!

The appearance of the unit is quite fancy, and yet simple, the buttons are all easily accessible and it doesn't take too long to get used to them, the remote controller is also useful and also easy to learn and operate, however it should be noted that if you want to attenuate the sound, the attenuation button is only on the remote controller and not anywhere on the player itself, so if you quickly want to attenuate the sound, you would have to first search for the remote then attenuate the sound (unless you intend to drive holding the remote in your hand all the time!), it would have been easier to have an attenuate button on the player itself. Then there is the option to change the screen colors which is a pretty neat thing, however, it should be noted that only the screen changes the color, the buttons all remain a constant red, it would have been really cool if the buttons could also change the color in sync with the screen. The screen is also well placed and gives all the necessary info like the time, dso setting, repeat, shuffle, BBE, song title and you can set it to dim when the lights of the car go on or manually dim it and also change the spectrum analyzer appearance. However the one gripe I have here is that the song title does not scroll across continuously. Even if you set it to autoscroll the title in the menu, it only scrolls across once, and then stops, this really sucks, wish the title would keep scrolling.

So overall I think this is a great player. The few minor gripes I have with it are, well, minor and I can live with those. So I would recommend this player to the average user who is just looking for a good clean MP3 player as a replacement to the stock player

Strengths: Amzing S/N ratio. Makes your old speakers come to life
Weaknesses: Sharp edges on the buttons makes it difficult to use.
Summary: I would definitely recommend this product. The LCD colors are cool and I like the 5 band equalizer and spectrum analyzer. The bass is great even on my old speaker.

The mp3 player has quick access to any song on the CD.

I would have liked it better if the mp3 song title scrolled continuously.

Strengths: Fantastic sound; high, clean power; quick MP3 playing; unique DSO feature; AUX input; adjustable high and low pass filters; subwoofer volume control
Weaknesses: LOUD must be selected from a menu; very limited animation on screen; backlighting choices not all that interesting
Summary: This unit rocks--literally! I purchased it to upgrade my existing factory stereo in a 2002 Chevy Avalanche North Face Edition. It brought out incredbile bass from my factory speakers, and the Kicker 2-way 6.5"s that I put in afterwards sound even better!

I chose this unit for a couple of very specific reasons: 1) 7-band EQ; 2) MP3 playback and 3) 100dB+ response.

A lot of manufacturers seem to think that a LOW-MID-HIGH "3-band EQ" is good enough, but I was disappointed by the "SystemQ" of my Kenwood 416s and Sony's 7-band EQ defintely makes my music sound better.

The manual says that the unit is limited to 300 (yes, three hundred) MP3 files per CD, depending on length of track naming, number of folders, etc. I burned an MP3 disk (used Nero and just made a data disk) and was on the road listening to them in under 10 minutes.

I also ran a mini to stereo RCA cable into the AUX port of the head unit so I could hook up my portable MP3 player to it, or a portable DVD player. There's even an adjustable gain to increase the volume from the AUX source. The only downside is that there is only one AUX, so if you get a changer, you can't have XM. If you get XM, you can't have a changer. Not a big deal considering how many MP3s fit on a CD, but keep it in mind.

The one thing I really don't like about the unit is that the display only scrolls ONCE, and that's when the MP3 track is first read. On my 416s (with CD TEXT), it would scroll the song title continuously. Important? Not really, but it is a feature I liked.

I didn't see DSO mentioned anywhere when I was comparing head units, but it's a nice feature. I'm not entirely sure how it works, but it basically seems to adjust the sound from lower speakers to dynamically make them seem more at ear level. I definitely use the feature (DSO level 1 for music and DSO level 3 for talk radio) and am glad it is there as it makes a very pleasing difference in sound.

Anyway, you won't be disappointed in this unit. I bought mine at Crutchfield (A+++++ service) and paid a little more, but also did the entire install myself.

Hope this review helps!

Strengths: Sounds great, easy to navigate
Weaknesses: Putting the face on quickly is an acquired skill.
Summary: I purchased this stereo to replace my factory stereo. It came with great instructions and fit right into my existing mounting brackets. It was my first time to install a car stereo and it only took me approximately 1.5 hours from start to finish. It sounds amazing and I haven't had one problem out of it. I would definitely recomment this product to others!

Strengths: Comes with many usefull options and upgrades that other radios in the same price range don't have.
Weaknesses: Preset buttons on bottom can be a little hard to find while trying to drive. This can be overcome by using the preset +/- at the volume control.
Summary: 2005-01-29 16:18:11 I had the Sony Xplode in a previous vehicle and was pleased with it, so when it came time to put a radio in my truck, I had no real second thoughts of putting anything but an identical or upgraded version.

Needless to say I was very satisfied with everything about this radio. It only took a little less than an hour to install. Fit perfectly into where the stock radio was. Sounds great and easy to understand and use the many different functions.
