Strengths: Burns Quick! No Errors
Weaknesses: Little slow to pick up a disk that has been burned by itself (4 minutes) Other than that nothing is wrong
Summary: This is one of the best drives you could possibly get!! I tried several others like HP 300i and Pioneer's newest version which both failed I would recomend this drive over any other drives on the market today

Strengths: The writer supports all formats with no errors so far.
Weaknesses: none, could be a little faster, but it's not a big deal
Summary: I reccoment this to everyone, for the one hundred and fifty dollar price tag and the following features:
For versatility, look to the LG Super-Multi Drive. The GSA-4040B records data up to 4.7GB per side on DVD media and writes in all kinds of formats: DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, DVD-RAM and CD-R/-RW
you cannot go wrong

My greatest complaint about this drive is that it ...
Strengths: Reads and writes all major DVD formats, including not only - and + but also RAM.
Writes + at 4x.
Weaknesses: Usually writes - at 2x, despite claim of 4x.
Writes 3x DVD-RAM slower than expected.
Summary: My greatest complaint about this drive is that it rarely actually writes 4x DVD-Rs at the full 4x speed. It wrote Memorex 4x DVD-Rs at only 2x; FujiFilm 4x DVD-Rs at only 2x (although this now appears to have been FujiFilm's fault, a mislabeling); and Ritek 4x DVD-Rs (RITEKG04) sometimes at 4x, but sometimes not. Often, the drive will attempt to write the RITEKG04 at 4x, but simply hang after lead-in, so that one must power down the computer to remove the disk! Nero's test mode diagnoses the problem as "no seek complete." In such cases, one must instead manually select 2x speed. By the way, this is even after updating the firmware to the A300 version.
LG tech support replies that LG recommends Pioneer and Maxell DVD-R media; but I myself have already been burned by Maxell counterfeits and don't wish to try them again, and Pioneer blanks are obscenely expensive.
The drive can burn Memorex 4x DVD+Rs at the full 4x speed, but attempting to put 4.5GB (out of 4.7GB capacity) of data on such a disk may fail verification--I don't know whether that's the disk's fault or the drive's. Lesser amounts of data are written without error.
The drive writes to 3x DVD-RAM more slowly than one might expect: 40 min for 4.5GB. One review suggested that this is because of the default verify-after-write strategy of DVD-RAM. (This strategy is partly what makes DVD-RAM so reliable for incremental data storage.)

Strengths: Drive writes to all DVD media.
So far my 'generic' cd-r and dvd-r discs are burning without any errors or problems.
Drive performs flawlessly with different dvd authoring and burning software.
Weaknesses: None for me.
Summary: Overall, I am highly satisfied with this drive. I am now able to store my video data on more secure media(dvd-r, dvd ram), and free up the hard drive for dvd authoring. While writing this review, noticed the price has dropped again. Will definitely buy this model again.

Strengths: can write any format available right now
Weaknesses: cannot write to DVD-RAM IN CARTRIDGE,
quite selective about media,
does not always write at highest speed (4x)
Summary: Good sturdy writer, that can do any format available right now and has decent CD-writing speeds. It came with a totally unknown software (BHgold), that has handled perfectly every DVD I have tried so far. The biggest problem I had at the beginning is that the computer would lock up every time I wanted to write a CD or DVD. I had to flash the firmware to A300 and it started to work as intended, so if you are scared of doing that, don't get it. In fact the first thing potential buyers should do is connect the DVD-ROM as a master by ITSELF on one of the IDE channels and flash the firmware to A300 - available at lgelectronics website, althogh not very easy to find. After that the writer has worked pretty well for me. I have only tried one type of media with it so far - Fuji, DVD-R, 4x. Some times it writes at 4x, sometimes at 2x, which tells me that even with the new firmware it can be a picky drive on media - beware of buying cheap such, or read newsgroups carefully to find info. Other than that I think it is a prett decent piece of hardware, especially for the price. ake sure you buy retail version - for the sfotware, it does not work very well with Nero 6 and older versions of Nero won't even recognize it.

I bought this because of its abilities to burn all ...
Strengths: Burns a good DVD on media it works on.
Weaknesses: Does not burn DVD+R. It is advertised to but it is clear talking to their technical support there is a problem in this area. Two firmware updates addressing this issue.
Summary: I bought this because of its abilities to burn all kinds formats. It is clear that the stars have to be in alignment to get this drive to burn a DVD+R. DVD+RW and DVD-R work fine.

Summary: Great device best DVD burner availible especially at the price... It's awesome... the software provided is Nero which is ok on my laptop, better then easy CD... but I choose to use Toast Titanium 6 on my Mac.

Strengths: Easy set up and installation; worked like a charm
Weaknesses: Need more instructions regarding the software included
Summary: I bought this DVD RW to back up important files in one click of a button. It is very seamless and works great! I had an LG CD-RW drive before this and it worked great as well. LG makes excellent products that get good ratings from PC World Magazine. Go for it!

Strengths: Multi format reader
Quiet
Reasonably fast in all formats R/W
Weaknesses: None as yet
Summary: An excellent bit of kit that does exactly what is says it will do on the box. And it does it well! This drive compares very well with it's more expensive peers. My confidence in LG kit is again fully justified.

Strengths: XP recognizes it... installation is a snap!
Weaknesses: Software included isn't worth installing.
Summary: Nice combo drive. Reads and writes all current formats... and does so well. Install took less than 5 minutes - XP recognized and installed the driver (the updated version) in moments. For the price, this drive will be hard to beat!

Strengths: Burns everything. Quiet
Weaknesses: Not as fast as I expect it to burn my movies.
Summary: The software that came with the retail verision, can't be used to back-up movies. But there are programs out there that will back them up. Depending on what you want for a result. I can burn a movie in about 30-45 minutes.
Price droped $20 a couple of days after I purchased it.
Programs are not free to de-region a CD, and copy it. But there are trial/demo verisions available.
