Strengths: lots of power (130watts x7),YPAO room calibration,Lots of connectors including HDMI, latest surround formats (THX select2, Dolby digital EX, DTS ES,etc).
Weaknesses: NO XM radio, remote control,no full scale upconvertion to HDMI. cannot engage surround back channels and presence at the same time.
Summary: This is one of the best receivers in today's market in regards to price-features ratio. It has msrp $1899 but you can find this much less (around $1200 -1300) thru pricegrabber. Before had bought this,I did research and went to several local dealers to "test drive" this receiver and made comparison with other brands like Denon avr3806. This is definetly the winner in my opinion.
as mentioned above it has lots of power and sounds great for both music (SACD/DVD Audio) and movies.
The best thing that I like from this receiver is Yamaha's YPAO; during the initial setup just plug in the supplied YPAO mic, place it in the center of the room and leave the rest to the YPAO. it automatically callibrates your speakers and sub (including freq response, size, phase, and positions). You can also later modify it according to your taste.
however, there are several things I dont like.
1. it doesnt have full scale video upconversion (analog to HDMI). so you really have to run additional cables to your HDTV.
2.instead of XM, it uses HD radio which is less
popular.
3. it is very hard using the remote control in the dark even with backlight.
4. last, it cannot engage surround back channels and presence at the same time. Well, I think this is the one that separates its RX-V with RX-Z class.
now yamaha just released RX-V2600 which is cheaper and has similar features,in addition, it adds full scale video conversion, XM radio and better remote control.
though it lacks some features that RXV2600 has, I still love this receiver because it has digital i.Link connection which is very nice for SACD/DVD-audio playback.
