2 Star ReviewLD LDA-511 DVD Player with Upconversion
Strengths: Excellent picture with upconversion. Easy setup
Weaknesses: Takes long time to load DVD to be able to play. Loading and viewing photos on memory cards takes so long as to make it unusable. Not worth the extra cost.
Summary: Playing DVDs is very good. Quality of image is excellent. I have 50" Panasonic Plasma HDTV with HDMI input and viewing DVD in 1080i or 720p was very impressive. The function to view memory cards seems a very good feature, but loading images is painfully slow and the function to move from photo to photo has a very poor user interface on the menu. The image quality of photos was marginal at best. I have found outstanding quality by merely inserting the memory card into my laptop and connecting the analog output of the laptop to the PC input on the Panasonic. Image quality much better than viewing the same photo using the slots on this player. I give image quality of DVD a 4.5 rating but the function of viewing photos on memory cards a 1 rating ... given a choice, a person would never use this function if they have capability to attach their laptop to their HDTV. Overall ... "2" ...

Strengths: Slim... Very, very slim. Slot loading (personal preference, but I like it). Mirrored face. Auto play. Has a real quality "feel" to it.
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: I bought this after purchasing a DLP projector. I was looking for a DVD player with the HDMI output. I have been very pleased with my decision. One feature that I've really enjoyed (and maybe this is common on most new players now, I don't know) is the auto play feature. You can select whether this is on or off. If on, it will skip any previews, anything that normally delays you from starting your movie, and it will begin playing the longest program on the DVD (which will normally be the feature movie).

3 Star ReviewLG LDA-511 DVD Player
Strengths: Tray-less loading mechanism, HDMI up-conversion, plays DivX movies
Weaknesses: Noisy loading mechanism, slow to eject discs, poor picture quality when displaying photos
Summary: The biggest selling point for me was actually that this DVD player does not use a tray to load the discs. It loads the discs the same way as a car stereo. My toddler tends to scratch the discs on the tray. With this player, there are no more scratched discs. Although toddlers can still damage discs with this unit -- one time I found two discs stuck inside the player and had to take it apart to pry the discs out.

The loading mechanism is noisy and it takes annoyingly long to eject a disc. But I take that over scratched discs any day.

The upconversion did not result in a significant improvement in picture quality on my HDTV set. Perhaps it because I am using comoponent instead of HDMI. Note that when using component cables, this DVD player will not upconvert copy-protected DVDs to 720p or 1080i. I tried with ripped DVDs and it still didn't look any better.

I tried using it to display some photos stored on a Compact Flash card, but the picture quality was very disappointing, especially when viewed on the HDTV set.

Strengths: HD Upconversion, NTSC/PAL support, SVCD, MPEG4 (XviD/DivX) support, Joliet filename support (long file name support), and HDMI output.
Weaknesses: None so far.
Summary: This is a really sleek looking player. It comes with the slot loading disc reader, it supports mpeg4 files which allows you to read many different file types, it also has long file name support for data discs. This is a great feature to have, it allows you to distinguish the difference in filenames, unlike say a Philips DVP-642. It is filled with features and is a solid unit. I hope to see more from LG in the future.

Strengths: Extremely slim form factor Noticable difference with picture quality with HDMI Inexpensive
Weaknesses: Remote does not have all the functionality that it should
Summary: I just bought this unit from Circuit City. We looked at 2 other units that were price the same and picked the LG because of its form factor and the fact that it did not require your TV have a special HDMI connector.

There is a noticable difference in picture quality when you turn on the HDMI. I would recommend this model.

Strengths: Appearance, features, price.
Weaknesses: Digital display, some controls on unit but not remote.
Summary: The first unit I bought was defective and would occasionally go to a blank screen during playback while using the up-conversion feature. The second unit works well with no such problems. The up-conversion IS VERY noticeable on a HD TV, especially when watching sci-fi type movies and also during close-ups on faces. WOW! When you go back to normal TV viewing after watching a movie is when you will notice it the most- nothing else is quite as sharp and almost seems fuzzy!

The unit has a very very thin and sleek mirrored front. (High cool factor!) Some of the features require you to use the front panel buttons and are not on the remote. (Download and read the short manual from the manufacturer for details). The display (digital readout), is so small it is un-readable from 10 or 12 feet away. I did not buy the unit for the memory card feature so I haven't used it and can't comment on that, but as long as it does something I consider it a bonus.

I have read the other reviews and don't seem to understand all the gripes about noise, load time, ect. It is slightly louder than drawer loading mechanisms but not that much that it is bothersome, especially for the only 2 or 3 seconds it takes to load or eject. I think it's great that there isn't any drawer to break off or cause disc scratches. The 10 second delay after insertion is welcome since it gives me time to go and sit down after putting in the disc.

At $100. after rebate for this kind of functionality it is a terrific bargain and a no-brainer.

Strengths: Price, Slim design, HDMI output, Slot load
Weaknesses: Slot load a little noisy, Flash card slots slow loading
Summary: This is a great unit for the price and comes with some top of the line features. The slot load design is unique howerver when loading or unloading a disc its a bit noisy. Playing the disc is whisper quite however. So far this unit has played every format ive put throught it. DVD-R & RW, DVD+R & RW, DVD+/- Dual layer discs as well. The manual said it can play MP3 and Windows Media CD-R's and it does but, it will also pay MP3 & Windows Media DVD's. The unit will allow you to make playlists from the audio DVD with onscreen menus.

Strengths: Looks sleek Card Reader for all formats No loading disk tray HDMI Plays Divx movies
Weaknesses: Noisy eject mechanism Costly DVD's that are dual-layered are a tight fit
Summary: The best thing about this player is the video it displays on my CRT. I have never seen a smoother picture out of any DVD player than this one. The best feature is the card reader which can play .mp3 loaded on them. That's cool. It also looks nice too with a mirror-like strip on the top edge of the player.

When ejecting a DVD DL the disk seems to have some trouble coming through the narrow slot. Some reviews say that their disks get scratched when this happens but I have ejected many times and no scratches appeared.

The remote is a thorough one and is responsive to commands.

I recommend this player but it is a bit pricey.

Strengths: Up converts over component video.
Weaknesses: Memory card slots responds very slowly
Summary: I've been looking for an up converting DVD player to use with my Philips 34PW8520 HDTV because it only has component and VGA inputs to HD. So far I'm very happy. The picture at 1080i is fantastic. The unit is very slim and looks great next to my other equipment. The vacuum loading slot works smoothly, althought the load time does seem a little long. The only downside is the speed of the memory card slots. I shoot all my photos on a 5 MP camera at the hightest resolution. Most photos take 10-20 seconds to display on the screen.
