Strengths: All the features you need for a business laptop, none of the expensive and heavy extras. Toshiba Backup is great for backing up Vista, if necessary. XP DVD is great to get away from Vista
Weaknesses: Not for gamers, graphic-intensive applications. Only comes with 6-cell battery. Speakers are very weak.
Summary: When I decided to get a 17" laptop, I originally bought an HP DV7T. While the HP is a nice machine, it was too heavy, came with features I didn't need such as a Blue-Ray player with touch-sensitive controls. Worst of all, it came with the dreaded Windows Vista!
After doing extensive research, I found this Toshiba model that had a good processor & RAM, but none of the heavy-duty graphics & sound cards - something I have no use for. Best of all, it comes with Vista Business, AND XP Pro!
Once I unboxed it, I backed up Vista with the Toshiba Recovery DVD Creator, a great feature!! I then installed XP with the supplied DVD, with all drivers installed, and this laptop went from idling at 900MB to 300MB. In the 3 weeks I have had it, I removed all the bloatware, and installed all the software I need, and it runs great! Without Vista slowing it down, it feels like a Corvette engine in a VW Bug! It's also much lighter than the HP was, and actually feels a couple ounces lighter than my old 15.4" Dell!
The only downsides are: The battery is only a 6-cell, which on a laptop this size, is probably not good for more than 1 1/2-2 hours, tops. The graphics and sound card are basic, but fine for my needs. Lastly, the speakers are the least loud I have ever seen. Forget about entertaining with them, they're barely good enough for personal use. Personally, I don't care b/c I stream my music to my stereo, but this may be an issue for some.
Overall, this is a great laptop for someone who needs a basic, powerful machine, and doesn't want to break the bank for it.
