Strengths: Great product and sits on the desk well. Yet to get a coaster
Weaknesses: None except the side slotting of the DVD which will drop the DVD when loading if you are not careful.
Summary: Previously I had owned the Sony 510A. A great DVD writer. When I saw this at sale I quickly picked it. Sony has done a great job with the design of thus player. It looks elegant and nice on the desktop. Looks are not everything ! Performance is excellent. Every single DVD, CD burned without a fault or coaster. It has both firewire and USB connections. I use the firewire as my USB ports are full. Package does include a firewire cable too. The bundled Nero package gives you all you need for burning your DVDs in 6mins. DVDs have been able to be played in my older Toshiba, Panasonic and Philips DVD players !

Strengths: Slick design, supports all format, USB and Firewire, cables included
Weaknesses: Software Included
Summary: Great burner, supports all formats, very nice looking. Fits perfect with my Sony Vaio desktop. One thing to keep in mind is the software included Nero 7 SE which only supports this drive so if you have another burner do not use the software included as it will not recognize your current drive. Other than this, best drive I have ever owned.

Strengths: Fast burning, sleek designs
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: Recently purchased the burner for my uncle, but after I used it a few times I had to go and purchase one for myself. I already had an HP internal DVD burner but the sony completely blows it away.

Strengths: USB 2.0 for widest support, PLUS IEEE1394 Firewire for quicker, more consistent speeds. Supports CD-R(W), DVD±R(W), and DVD+R Double Layer (DL).
Weaknesses: None for the drive, but firmware updates are hard to find, and web support is difficult to navigate.
Summary: 2006-12-01 01:35:25 I LOVE having both USB 2.0 and Firewire (IEEE1394) options! USB 2.0 is great for wide support, but firewire is great for quicker and more consistent speeds. Don't be fooled by the faster USB 2.0 specification. Firewire is noticeably faster for video and other large-file, high-performance data transfer.
--------------
Disc support is fabulous. Supports fast speeds on CD-R(W) and all 4.7GB DVD±R(W) formats, plus 8.5GB DVD+R Double Layer (DL). My first DVD burner was a Sony, and they've only improved it since then. The DRX-810UL is the newer model, but it only offers some higher maximum speeds for a couple of the supported formats. You won't notice the difference as long as you keep the firmware updated.
--------------
I may hate Sony's intellectual property Nazis (e.g. the rootkit audio CD protection fiasco), but their hardware people obviously don't listen to those jerks. They make (or at least distribute) some good, reliable hardware. Supposedly, this DRX-800UL drive is a top-notch Lite-On model, packaged as a Sony. The DRX-810UL is supposedly a top-notch BenQ model. You'll be happy with either one. Get whichever is cheaper.

Strengths: slim, good quality. worth the money
Weaknesses: none
Summary: After doing extensive reaseach for an external DVD burner, I decided to go with Sony's burner. Its small, and its external!! You can take it anywhere you want. Sony has a terrific reputation for quality and as long as it's under warranty, the service is quite good. I got it for about $99 after shipping and tax, which I think it's a great deal for a Sony.

Strengths: Quick and Beautiful External Drive
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I bought a Sony VAIO notebook that did not had a DVD burner installed and so I bought this Sony External DVD burner and it's worth every penny. First of all, the DVD burner can burn single layer DVD blanks (4.7GB) but also can burn double layer DVD blanks (8.5GB) as well with high speed with ease. Secondly, this DVD external burner has a beautiful design. Lastly, this is a Sony product and so you know this is a well built machine. In conclusion, I highly recommend to all consumers to buy this external burner because it's the best in the market currently.
