Strengths: Plug and play easy!!!
Weaknesses: Haven't found any yet.
Summary: I guess this drive is considered a Pioneer drive since it shows up that way in the hardware configuration. It is fast and very easy. I use the MySonicDVD software to create electronic scrapbooks for my daughter who is 8 years old. I started using Microsoft's MovieMaker and very quickly found the need to be able to burn DVD's. I bought this external version so I can easily have another drive when I upgrade my computer system.

Strengths: Work as advertised cross plateform (Mac OSX10.3, Win2k). Cool clean case..
Weaknesses: Nothing really.
Summary: This is a LaCie designed/cased/bridged Pioneer DVR-106D. It works perfectly with DVD+R or -R on both Mac and PC. However DVD+R media can only read back from this drive on a Mac due to Mac dosen't really support DVD+R. Actually that will be a plus for this drive if you use a Mac - you can read/wirte DVD+Rs with this drive!

As to DVD video/movies this drive works very well. The DVDs could even be watched on PS2.

3 Star ReviewInstalled on a Micron laptop via PCMCIA USB 2.0 ad ...
Strengths: Solidly built. Smooth quiet operation.
Weaknesses: When I check various websites for compatibility with software drivers and media, this particular model was never listed.
Summary: Installed on a Micron laptop via PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter. It may not be the drive but I had problems writing very large files from an external USB hard drive to a DVD. Both the hard drive and DVD drive were connected via the same USB adapter card so that may have caused the problem. Connecting the hard drive to the computer's built-in USB (slower V1) port worked fine. Media I tried successfully: Memorex DVD+RW, IMIX CD-R (bulk cheap). I will modify this review with each new brand of media I try. Played a DVD movie with the supplied software and worked great.

Interesting factoid: Windows sees this device as a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D (what's up with that??).

Strengths: Excellent Mac Plug and Play device. Works well in OS 9 and OSX. Uses USB and FireWire connections for added flexibility.
Weaknesses: A bit loud when reading/burning discs.
Summary: LaCie devices usually work well with Macs. No complicated PC software drivers to install.

The aluminum case housing this external DVD/CD burner is rugged and the tray mechanism seems to be sturdy too.

Uses either USB or Firewire connections which make for added flexibility when other USB/FireWire peripherals are connected to the computer.

Can read/write in both DVD-R and DVD+R making this a cross platform device that is PC and Mac friendly. Also, this is a DVD burner that can handle new 4X DVD-R and DVD-RW media. The software bundled with the d2 is easy to use.

For less than $250, this is an excellent, multi-platform DVD/CD burner.

Strengths: Ease of installation, recording performance
Weaknesses: Small hard to find eject button, power button is too small
Summary: This is true plug & play. After I plugged it in to my T40 Thinkpad if seamlessly recorded 20 DVD's with no issues. I would highly recommend this DVD recorder.
