Strengths: Picture clarity, convenience, flexibility.
Weaknesses: Must subscribe to TiVo.
Summary: I've held out buying a DVD player because I rarely rent movies to watch. I've been waiting for a DVR/DVD Recorder to come down in price, and this is the one. I couldn't be happier, except if I didn't have to pay TiVo every month.

3 Star ReviewHUMAX DRT400 40-Hour TiVo with DVD Recorder
Strengths: TiVo Interface, Lifetime eligibility, DVD Recorder
Weaknesses: Single layer DVD, Limited recording Time
Summary: Combination of TiVo DVR with the ability to record and archive programs you really want to keep. I've been using this device for the past few months without a glitch. The DVD recording is easy and straight forward to use. This device is eligible for lifetime service for $299 which can save you money if you keep it for several years.

Strengths: Tivo, can record shows recorded on Tivo onto DVD, still eligble for tivo lifetime.
Weaknesses: Long and tedious setup process, no optical audio input but has audio output (degrades sound quality), slow response remote
Summary: Basically, if you can still get your hands on this on clearance, you can still get Tivo lifetime of unit for 300. At the same time, you can record recorded tivo shows onto a dvd. The speed and setup are slow, but for this price and still get tivo lifetime, I think I'll manage.

Strengths: Tivo DVD burner and recorder with 40 hours of hard drive storage
Weaknesses: Long setup process with Tivo service, takes about 1 hour
Summary: I love my Humax recorder. Its very easy to operate, and has lots of great features.

The Tivo service is great. I can record TV programs when I'm away, or watching another TV. You can only record 1 program at a time. Its easy to set up this unit to work with your existing cable box tuner. When its time for the program to be recorded, a signal is sent from the Humax to the cable box, and it changes it to the correct channel. Also includes a great easy to use remote controller.

After I have recorded a few shows I can copy them and burn them to a blank DVD-R, playable in most DVD players.
