Strengths: It is an all-in-one piece with TV tuner, PVR, DVD burner, 17 Ultra-sharp widescreen, etc. OMG! It is beautiful! Pent 3.2 Hyper threading, etc. Wireless build in, etc.
Weaknesses: Not much upgradeable; only support up to 1 gig of RAM. I did have some difficulties in installing the mouse and keyboard, which you have to re-install both drivers.
Summary: Overall, it's an excellent computer. Runs fast and quiet. Especially the 17" LCD monitor, every pixel seems to be uniform, and everything shows up nicely and sharp on it. I would recommend this monster to anyone who is planning on purchasing a PC for game and playing movie.

Strengths: Beautiful 17" Widescreen LCD with X-Brite, Fast 3.2Gz CPU, Built in Tv Tuner
Weaknesses: Wireless Range of the mouse is not very far. 1GB Max Ram. Very limited ways to upgrade
Summary: The Sony VGC-V617G is a sleek and modern all in one computer system. The first thing one will notice about is its beautiful 17” 1280 x 768 built in LCD. The Display is comparable to the clarity of my dell 700m. Both have some of the best displays I have ever seen. It is great for watching movies or using as a TV with the use of the built in TV tuner.

The 3.2Gz P4 processor wHT provides ample processing power for almost all users. This system comes with only 512MB of Ram but I can upgraded to 1GB ( which I plan to do ) I was a little disappointed that this machine supports only 1GB of RAM, but for most users this will be ample.

The built in TV tuner works like a charm with Sony’s VAIO Zone Software. The remote of very functional as well. With the 200GB hard drive you will have plenty of space for recording your favorite TV shows or sport games. Then you can burn them to DVD with the 8X DVD burner ( which also burns CD‘s ).

This System also plays games decently well, thank to the its 8X AGP NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5700. However it will not play some of the newer high end games. NVIDIA driver support is rather lacking as well.

One nice feature is this machines built in wireless card, which operates under 802.11b and 802.11g. It also has a built in Ethernet port and 56k Fax modem. It also has Several USB 2.0 ports, firewire port, and a PC Card slot.

Another nice feature is this machines lack of cords, since it all in one enclosure. Also its built in speakers perform well for what they are. The Key also have a very nice feel, ( more like a laptop keyboard ), I did not care much for the mouse so I replaced it with a corded optical mouse, due to some serious range issues with it’s wireless connection.

All in all the Sony VGC-V617G is an excellent all in one system. Other than the issues with the mouse, and the fact of not being able to upgrade components, I have no complaints. I was able to purchase this computer at a major retailer, at a very good price. Due to not being able to upgrade I would not pay $1500 for this computer but if you are able to pick it up for less I think it is well worth it.

Strengths: all in one, cordless keyboard/mouse/remote controller
Weaknesses: low volume, sleep button just above Esc key
Summary: I like the feature of all-in-one. This should be the way computer is. Remember our macintosh computers back then? The computer should come in 1 piece like this. Just plug in the power and I can do anything I want.

However, the volume is a little low for this multimedia pc. Pictures and movies are great but I wish it has a little better speakers for multimedia purposes.

Accidentally pressed suspend/sleep button so many time when I tried to reach Esc button. That's not good.

Strengths: fast processor. elegance design, beautiful 17" Widescreen LCD with X-Brite, Built in Tv Tuner
Weaknesses: RAM 512 only. Not very upgrade friendly.
Summary:

This is beautiful peace from Sony. It is so compact and stylish with beautiful widescreen 17" lcd XBRITE screen. the wireless keyboard/mouse and remote are very good features to include. Memory card reader will only read Memory Sticks and not SD, XD, compact flash or any other kind of cards.

For gamers there is very little choice for upgarde. but for reguler user i would say they will love it.

With built in tuner you can watch your TV programs easily.

All in all a very well put together computer with a few draw backs.

And i love it.

Strengths: take only few space Wide screen monitor wireless keyboard, mouse and remote control
Weaknesses: In case your CPU going bad, the monitor could be useless.
Summary: I love this all-in-one product from Sony. You don't have to deal with messy cables, since everything is wireless and it only takes few space on your desk.

Its widescreen monitor is really attractive and could serve well as HDTV.

The only risk is, if you got problem with the CPU, the monitor could become useless. But hopefully, everything will be fine, since Sony normally make a good product.

Strengths: Unique shape and structure. Save a lot of desk space. Very good LCD quality, huge hard drive, and DVD burner.
Weaknesses: Not easy to upgrade. Max memory is only 1GB. Video card is not powerful.
Summary: The desktop is very impressive because of its unique design. It is a mini desktop with integrated LCD. Everything is wireless. And very quiet and powerful. The performance is very good and have a huge hard drive. The drawback of the design is that you may not be easy to open the box and upgrade the memory and hard drive. Since 19" LCD is becoming mainstream, the 17" LCD is too small. Overall I am happy with the machine.

3 Star ReviewNot bad for the all-in-one system
Strengths: all-in-one
Weaknesses: Esc button next to Suspend button
Summary: The system was bought from office depot. The box advertised system came with XP Media Center Edition but my system only had XP Home edition installed. No big deal but if we can get XP MCE with it, the system will be much more powerful.

One thing I hate most is the Esc button just below the suspend button on the keyboard. Sometimes I press the Esc and accidentally press the suspend button above it (very close to each other). It turns off the whole system or into suspend mode. I am not sure what mode it gets into but there is no way I can wake it up. Tried to press any key, moved mouse... Nothing. I have to turn off the system by holding the power button (on the right side) until it's off then turn it back on. Very dangerous especially when you are in the middle of important work.

I have not tried all the multimedia features yet but one disavantage right out of box is it only has 1 slot for Sony media card. I wish it can have at least SD slot but too bad, sony only wants us to use their media.

Strengths: Cristal Clear Display, High-End Hardware, Modern Design.
Weaknesses: None. Maybe the high price tag.
Summary: This is one hot little computer for the price, though I got it for half the price it sells for in stores so I would suggest shopping around. I have not hooked it up to cable yet so I can't testify to the tv reception or the dvd-rw as someone spoke of but for the price I paid I'll buy a external cd-dvd drive if I don't like this one.

This thing beats the daylights out of my 40 gig laptop.

Strengths: Occupies lesser space; Good clarity even viewing from distance; Has a DVD writer; Can be used to watch TV and surf computer at the same time; Both TV and computer can be remotely controllable
Weaknesses: DVD drive mounted vertically; 512 MB RAM
Summary: I purchased this Sony VAIO during December 2005. Right after purchasing I called the dish guys to connect it as my second TV. Dish technician did not find any difficulty in connecting it as all the required instructions were coming when it was switched to TV mode.

Placing it next to my bed, I do my computer works from my bed in the late hours with the wireless keyboard and mouse. It gives a feeling that I have a laptop. It has a DVD drive where DVD +/-RW can be burned. I have never found difficulties in burning a DVD +/- R, RW. When I am done with computer works, I can switch it into TV mode with a remote control. Remote is very user friendly.

200 GB hard disc space facilitates to store whatever you want in the computer. I am trying to get some help from manufacturer to upgrade the 512 MB RAM to higher capacity.

It is really worth for the money given to this product.

Strengths: ALL in one, bright and beautiful screen!
Weaknesses: Almost impossible to upgrade!
Summary: This is one of the best designed PC I see so far. Sony did a great job by putting everything in a very slim design. The checkout lady was looking for the "computer" when I checked it out ... :) Her jaw was almost dropped when she learned that everything is in that little cute monitor.

The drawback would be that this is a fixed configuration. Not much upgrade can be done. Well, it is good enough for even somewhat demanding task (I upgrade my memory to 1GB).

3 Star ReviewAwsome machine but could be better
Strengths: *The display is crisp and sharp. *Come with built-in wireless: network, keyboard, mouse *The keyboard is like a laptop. Nice to type on. Keyboard have a palm rest that also act as a dust cover.
Weaknesses: *Doesn't run silence. There are noise from the fan and hard drive. The noise from the hard drive is the worse. *Runs warm *Expensive *Too Thick
Summary: 2005-12-21 21:13:08 Here’s how you setup this computer: Un-box it and plug in one cable. That’s all, only one (Power) cable come out of your computer. The wireless card is built in, so no LAN cable to run. You can make it more complicated by plugging in the cable line or other video cables as needed. The system has a recovery feature to put your computer back to factory installed case in case you got hit hard by some virus. Mine didn’t come with a Windows DVD. I had to burn my own using the Sony wizard. This helps the environment by reducing the number of unnecessary install disk.

This All-in-one computer has been great so far. To get there, I had to do some improvements myself. Sony puts too much junk software into the computer. These extra software slow the system down. Sony ties their different software together so it's hard to tell what software is really needed and which software is hogging up the system's resource unnecessarily.

I did a fresh installation myself (remember to backup b4 you reinstall the Windows operating system. Remember to download the drivers and save them to a safe place before you reinstall Windows. The system runs much faster after a fresh installation of Windows. For an all-in-one TV and PC, this unit should have come with Windows XP Media center edition instead of XP Home. This unit only comes with a 60 days trial of Microsoft Office.

This AIO unit is bulky. It’s at least three times the size of my Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop with 17” Widescreen. This unit it should be built thinner. That way, the unit can be mounted to the wall, or clamp to the desk. The DVD burner is a mini slip out like on a laptop system. I wish Sony would use a slot load DVD reader like in my car. This would make putting in and removing a DVD much faster and convenient.

The monitor on this unit is very bright and sharp. I considered Sony to have the best Xbrite type of glossy screen. This screen is what draws me to buy this unit. For $2,000, I wish it would come with a 19” screen instead of 17” screen. The unit itself is black and the pedestal is silver. I wish they would’ve made up their mind and stick to one color scheme.

I love the keyboard. The wireless keyboard is light. The keys feel like those on the laptop. This allows for faster typing. The palm rest on the keyboard can quickly convert into a cover. This cover reduces the dusts from building up on the keyboard. I think all keyboard should come with this a dust cover. The dust cover can quickly convert back to a palm rest for you to rest your hands on. This is handy if the keyboard is resting on your thighs. The keyboard comes with special button for accessing the Internet, Video, Mail, Help, volume control, etc. There is also a nice and light remote to control the computer.

This system did not come with a detailed manual. You can view the manual online at: esupport.sony.com/perl...

All in all, this is a very good computer system. I’m happy with my purchase so far. I rate this system an 8 out of 10.

3 Star ReviewSony VAIO VGC-V617G DESKTOP
Strengths: fast processor, beautiful bright view LCD. Dual Layer DVD burner! PVR solution
Weaknesses: Only 512 of Ram, and only upgradable to 1gb of Ram, Would like to be able to add more Ram.. Should have included XP Media Center Edition. Only supports Memory sticks with the card reader.
Summary: Sony has created a beautiful computer. All of this computer is found right behind the beautiful widescreen 17inch lcd. the wireless keyboard/mouse/ and remote are very good features to include! This desktop is coming close to the way the apple G5 Macs look, not quite but almost! Sony is very picky, the memory card reader will only read Memory Sticks and not SD, XD, compact flash or any other kind of cards. This is how all sony computers I've looked at are though! All in all a very well put together computer with a few draw backs!

Strengths: Desgign, Powerhouse, Build Quality, Sharp Bright Screen
Weaknesses: Limited Upgradability
Summary: I got this last year and hooked up up instantly. I was immediately surplised with how good the screen looks - it's beautiful! I'm using it for my office and mainly designing work, which works great. Many collegues have complemented me on the design too. Top design is what you would expect from Sony. Definately recommended!
