Strengths: Crisp, clear Dolby Pro Logic Digital or DTS sound, speaker stands included for 2 speakers, easy to set up
Weaknesses: Surround speakers are not wireless ready, no DVD Player (for those looking for a built in DVD player)
Summary: 2005-09-15 06:25:41 This is my first home theater system and I now realize what I have been missing. The surround sound is incredible when watching sporting events or movies from DVD’s or HD channels. When watching sporting events, it makes you feel like you are right there at the stadium. The subwoofer is excellent and has no distortion. The sound from all 5 speakers is crisp and clear and the 800 watts gives you plenty of power (PriceGrabber info shows 700 watts, but Panasonic website shows it actually has 800 watts).
To get the full effect of the Dolby Pro Logic or DTS surround sound, you need to use either an optical fiber or coax audio cable. You can get a surround sound effect with a setting called "SFC Sports" mode, but it's not as good as the Dolby Pro Logic setting.
The main unit has an AM/FM tuner, but does not have a DVD player. Personally, that was one of the reasons I purchased this model. Since I already have an HD Plasma TV, a DVD recorder & a DVD player, I couldn't see spending extra money for another DVD player. Especially since the new Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players are coming out.
One other thing to note is that this unit only includes audio inputs/outputs, no video. If you do require video inputs/outputs in the main unit, you will need to purchase the Panasonic SC-HT17. The SC-HT15 works fine for my setup, since I feed the DVD and DVR into the component inputs of the TV. Then I use the TV’s optical audio output to feed the Home Theater’s audio input. So when you switch from TV to DVD to DVR, you always have the correct sound feeding into the Home Theater's TV input.
Overall, I recommend this to anyone looking for a high quality home theater unit that is priced right!
