Strengths: Factory-look, excellent features for the money.
Weaknesses: Voice recognition is not available even as an option. Cannot play DVD movie.
Summary: Be careful where you buy. Pioneer has a limited number of authorized internet providers. You can save money by purchasing from other internet providers but you may not get the Pioneer warranty. More importantly, may not be able to get the free updates to the navigation software (per Pioneer). I paid $120 more (after messing with the #@%$ rebate hassle) by purchasing from an authorized provider but I received 1 year more extended warranty and an installation kit the includes installations tools, harnesses, etc.

Strengths: gorgeous LCD screen, Plenty of external connectivity, accurate GPS software.
Weaknesses: No RDS, No internal hard drive, No interanl DVD playback capabilities.
Summary: I was never a big fan of the single-din, retractable screen; multimedia head units in the first place. And since I loved what Kenwood did with the DDX7017 full double-din unit, I couldn’t wait for Pioneer to release a similar product. Only because everything I ever owned have been Pioneer and I wouldn’t have to worry about compatibility issues with a different brand. But now that the time has finally here, I’m a bit disappointed with Pioneer’s attempt with this first generation 2-Din multimedia unit. The AVICD1, however, has some remarkable features. It has one of the nicest and informative LCD touch screen that I’ve seen. The navigation software is simply on point! It combines GPS signals from satellites with vehicle speed info to pinpoint your location. It also has XM Traffic, rear view camera, and external AV connectivity. And unlike the DDX7017, it doesn’t require a separate navigation accessory. Now the negatives: First, it lacks direct DVD play back capability. This function has been omitted to keep the driver from watching movies while driving. But the unit can still be used as a monitor with an external DVD player. But still won’t let you watch it when driving. It also lacks RDS (Radio Data System). A feature found in most factory head units and in several early Pioneer models. I personally miss the RDS text info when listening to local FM stations. Lastly this unit has a mysterious “wired remote” input on the rear. But I have yet to find any info about it. Not even Pioneer website has anything listed under their accessory list. So I’m hoping that this input will be reserved to link the unit with existing steering wheel controls that many newer vehicles come with by means of some sort of adapter. That way you can control frequently used functions right form your fingertips. It would be real nice to see some, if not all, of these features added to next year’s model. But Pioneer has the tendency to make very minor improvements of their products with each generation other than cosmetic of course. In fact they sometimes take away useful features (i.e. ID Logic, RDS, DFS Alarm) to lower the price and making it more appealing to the public. So is highly doubtful that the ADICD1 will undergo major changes. For example I seriously doubt it’ll have an internal hard drive (ala Eclipse) any time soon to eliminate the need for a navigation DVD. But in case there is any doubt about Pioneer’s tendencies to strip down good head units, I got one word for you: DEX-P1R (arguably one of the best head units ever made) but I still recommend the ADICD1 because of its tons of features and reasonable price.

Strengths: Easy to use, looks great, not gaudie
Weaknesses: The D@mn warning screen upon every start up
Summary: This is a great unit The ONLY two complaints I have are: 1)You consistantly have to press "OK" to accept the liceanse agreement EACH time you start your vehicle. 2)Are not able to download custom backgrounds as with the N2

3 Star ReviewPioneer Avic-D1
Strengths: Price, Fast Nav Updates, Radio Power, Great Looking clear Screen
Weaknesses: To many motion lockdown procedures, annoying message everytime you start up the unit, No download custom background images option
Summary: If you are upset at some of the AVIC-D1 Problems Like,

Why so many motion lockdown procedures and Removing the Warning Message that requires you to press "OK" to continue. and No way to download custom background images like the AVIC-N2 allows you to.

Strengths: Fantastic sound, easy to use, Navigation very precise, reasonable price, easy to use touch screen, plenty of options are able to be added on
Weaknesses: none
Summary: I love this Navigation unit. It is so easy to use. The touch screen makes even easier to use. The sound quality is perfect and the Navigation is so precise on directions. I recommend this unit to anybody. I know there are other units out there but I'd recommend this unit instead of the Kenwood, Alpine, Jensen or the Eclipse just because of the reliability of pioneer's name. I'm not saying that the other units are no good but I know for a fact the Pioneer is a great company and they are always available to help with any problem that a customer might have with there products. That to me is more important than getting the unit for a lessor price. Reliability is the most important thing. I recommend this stereo and Navigation to everybody!!!!!

Strengths: Navigation, Map size, Sounds Great, plays MP3's, Easy install.
Weaknesses: No voice recognition, No hard drive, Cannot Play DVD videos. No security features.
Summary: This is a good product it sounds great I don’t even think that there is a need for an external Amp with the quality sound that this unit puts out. The navigation system is very good I rarely have any problems with it. The options are very good to add to the unit, XM traffic update, backup camera and TV, its just sad that you have to buy a separate DVD player when this unit has a DVD reader for the Nav Discs... so why not just add DVD movie playback???? In my opinion pioneer must have rushed this one out the door because it seems to be missing simple features which older and lesser models have. I owned an older pioneer navigation (1999 model) which had Voice recognition so I was very surprised that this one didn’t. For a double din stereo you would think that it should have more built in features than a single din Navigation... But it doesn’t. Overall it’s a very good deal for the price; other similar price competitors don’t offer the same features for the same price. So if this is within your budget and Voice recognition and upfront DVD playback are not a big issue then this unit is perfect.

Strengths: Factory look, accurate navigation, integration with other devices.
Weaknesses: Sensitivity of touch screen. Fairly confusing to change options without reading the manual.
Summary: I've been looking at a lot of different options to put into my Silverado and finally opted for this unit. I have to say that it looks just like a factory installed unit. The advantages are however that you can install a backup camera, which is very usefull in a silverado. I also installed a fairly inexpensive DVD unit as well. Yes, if you don't do any tinkering, you have to have the parking brake on for routing etc. This can easily be turned off by bypassing some wires in the unit. If you search you can find out how, but this could also be dangerous.

I am a little worried that I have to push fairly hard on the screen for it to recognize the touch. It is also fairly warm to the touch as well. This might be normal operation, but it's just my opinion that the screen may get damaged over time.
