Strengths: Shape allows unit to fit into limited older entertainment centers. Color, sharpness and clarity. Easy interface. Reliable brand name. 60,000 hour rated life!!! (9th generation plasma).
Weaknesses: Unit, like many plasma TVs get very hot and give off alot of heat from the top of unit (kid concern). Base doesn't swivel or move. Limited amount of analog inputs in rear of TV (for older components)
Summary: When looking for a replacement to our deceased Toshiba projection TV (less than five years old requiring a $400 convergence repair), we decided to go with the times and look at flat panel TVs. To maximize the space available, we believed we could go with a 50" set. However, at this point in time, LCD sets are not made that large (yet). Besides, LCD sets are generally more expensive. From our research, we learned that unlike earlier plasma TVs, the newest generation of plasma sets actually last as much as the older CRT sets (I believe this set is rated for actually 60,000 hours of use). This was a huge draw-back in earlier models and precluded us in looking at plasma sets altogether (unless you like expensive short term investments). Also, the price of plasma sets have dropped dramatically in the last couple of years. When comparing the sets, features and the sort, including the limited space we had to put the unit in, we concluded that for the money (we purchased the unit for $3,199.00), this set was for us. We have not upgraded to HD as of yet, however, but I am sure that once we do sometime in the future, we will really appreciate the ability of this set.
