Strengths: Price and it plays almost everything I put in it
Weaknesses: Will not play DVD +RW's, but then Pioneer says it won't
Summary: I purchased this to replace an older DVD player that would not function with burned DVD's. For the most part I am very happy with it; it will play and function (ff, rw, etc.) with almost all the dvd's I have burned. The one exception is the 8x DVD +RW's. Pioneer does not list this as a playable media but I had read another review on the net that said it would, and I was hoping it would, no dice. Now for the upside. I have made a several DVD's to this point. Some captured from VHS, some from my sat TV feed, and some from DVD to DVD - this player does play them almost without exception. I have given some of the same copies to friends and family and the have reported slight glitches and issues in certains spots on the movie, but when played in this player I cannot repeat those issues.
What can I say, it does what I wanted it to do and I used pricegrabber to get a very good deal on one.

Strengths: Universal player. Wonderful transport. Great DAC (audio).
Weaknesses: light and too slim (no high-end look)
Summary: This universal player is one of those truly versatile ones. This plays all kinds of DVD movies (DVD video, DVD+/-R, DVD-RW), CD's, MP3 CD's, Picture CD's, and most uniquely (except a few others) DivX/XviD CD/DVD's, as well as DVD-Audio, SACD.
So this functionality, under $150, makes this player as almost a unique choice for customers. But it's not just that. This DVD player has a very impressive audio processing functions. Wonderful DAC, produces sound better than most high-end CD players.
Strongly recommended, for those who need either DVD player, CD player or both.

Strengths: Compact, wide range of compatibility, great price
Weaknesses: Not fully DualDisc compatible ... only a problem if you burn your own DVDs in this new format. The black DVD eject button is hard to find in low light.
Summary: This slim line DVD Player has all the features
I needed right now, and is both DVD-Audio and SACD compatible. It's audio and video delivery of Lord of the Rings was fabulous using the S-video connection. The remote is fairly intuitive and easy to use.
The player performed great on home made DVDs and CD jpeg picture disks. Zoom and slow motion functions worked nicely with the only limitations being source material quality.
For the price this player is tough to beat.

Failed to meet expectations
Strengths: Mutliple playback formats, Price
Weaknesses: Trouble reading rented DVD's. IT Did not recognize any cd intially out of the box.
Summary: I recommended this to a friend and it did not perform up to my expectations at all. I own the DV-563A and it still works great for me.
This new model is slimmer and seems not to be as high of a quality from a construction perspective. It did not recognize any CD intially out of the box. When it did finally start working the loading mechanism sounded a bit loud and still had problems recognizing things.
Rented DVDs seem to fair the worse by stopping and failing repeatedly. Can't recommend this model to anyone.
Recommend Pioneer go back to better box construction on this model and forget the whole slim line idea.

Strengths: Play a lot of formats of files and disks, light and competible with SACD and DVD-Audio.
Weaknesses: Small size and light like a cheap dvd player, not all Vidx file support or semi-support some files, menu is not easy to navigate but is good enough for basic use.
Summary: 2006-02-07 18:12:59 This DVD player is great, any files and disks supported by other major dvd player are supported by this one. However, not all XVid file can be played, some of them have no sound or no picture. I have to burn it into DVD-Video to watch. The SACD and DVD-audio music is much better than regular CD music. Also it is cheaper than other DVD players with same functions. a pleasent buy.
