Read More Description: The Yamaha NSSP 1600 speaker package gives you the convenience of an all-in-one system with high quality speakers. Not only are these speakers perfectly matched for acoustics and design, but they take advantage of unique technologies that Yamaha originally developed for its high-end speakers. With an amplifier or receiver and a DVD player, you'll enjoy movies with sensational surround sound. What's more, even with their extremely high quality, these speakers are small enough for easy positioning in rooms of any size. The satellite (main, rear and rear center) speakers have a two-way acoustic suspension design with one coaxial two-way driver plus one full-range driver. The center speaker has the same coaxial two-way driver, and also includes dual cone full-range drivers. All of these speakers are rated at 100 watts maximum output, more than enough for dynamic movie sound. The 100 watt powered subwoofer uses two of Yamaha's unique power-bass technologies: QD-Bass and advanced YST. They combine power and detailed, accurate reproduction in a compact unit. Good bass is more than just pounding, it's important for the full sonic enjoyment of games, music and especially movies.QD-Bass Technology uses down-firing drivers with square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate the sound efficiently in four horizontal directions. The reflective plates (not used in competitor's down-firing subwoofers) negate any effects caused by the floor surface and reduce resonance between sound waves reflected from the floor and the unit. Also, most other systems use circular cones, but by radiating in four directions to avoid the legs of the cabinet, QD-Bass reduces turbulence caused by reflection from the legs. Changing the height of the square pyramid varies the acuostic load, permitting relatively simple high-cut adjustment and improved bandpass properties. The QD-Bass system provides extraordinary power and smooth frequency response from an extremely compact unit. It also allows greater freedom of placement, since the sound radiates with equal effectiveness in all directions.Yamaha's patented Advanced Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) generates incredible bass from small speaker enclosures. Advanced YST is the ideal method of combining amplifiers and speakers for maximum performance. This system's advanced negative impedance converters intelligently adjust the negative impedance generation as the speaker moves, creating a hard, rigid cone that prevents deep resonant waves from leaking out of the speaker cone. This means the full power of the waves is forced out through the air port, resulting in clear, powerful bass. Minimize |

Strengths: Unbelievable sound
Weaknesses: Subwoofer control panel
Summary: My Yamaha NS-SP1600 5.1 speaker package arrived quickly from the vendor Etronics.com, whose email communication, packaging and shipping were all first rate.
I received the speakers within 1 week of placing my order, in their original box and in perfect condition.
I hooked the speakers up to a Harmon Kardon audio/video amplifier AVI 200II with the audio output from my Sony 46” LCD flat-screen plugged into the TV input of the Amp.
The sound from these speakers while viewing a DVD, the main reason I acquired them along with the new Sony HDTV, was simply outstanding. They gave true meaning to the term home THEATER. We felt like we were actually in the theater, the sound was so awesome. Just hearing any THX audio/video logo at the beginning of a DVD, lets you know that you are in for an incredible aural treat. We test drove several DVD’s including several Star Wars films, Godzilla 1998, Apollo 13, From The Earth To The Moon, and many other “action” type films. The sound during the opening dogfight battle scene from Star Wars III Revenge of the Sith was thrilling, crisp and clear with all the right “surround effects”, also owed a lot to the 5.1 technical excellence of the DVD itself, but the Yamaha speakers handled it with ease. The lift off sequence from Apollo 13 was equally thrilling with the subwoofer adding just enough lower end resonance to make our windows and nik-naks rattle and hum. You could actually FEEL the Saturn 5 rocket lift-off as if you were there! Just unbelievable!
The subwoofer has it’s own powered amp with independent volume control allowing for fine-tuning the bottom sounds to your own liking. Our living room has wall to wall carpet and I found that by raising the subwoofer onto a wooden pedestal about 6 inches off the carpet made for a big difference and improvement in the bass sound, a little sharper and not quite as muddy as it was when resting right on the rug.
My living room is 21 x 22 and the Yamaha’s easily envelope the entire space, creating a wonderful movie watching and listening experience
The only drawback to the speakers, and one that I can easily live with, is the placement of the sub-woofer’s power switch, power indicator light and volume control, all of which are located on the back of the speaker making for difficult access. The volume control and speaker wire input jack are near the top but the power on/off switch is closer to the bottom, about 4 or 5 inches directly below the volume control and speaker wire, making it difficult to find and turn on and off, with the speaker wire often getting in the way. I also placed the speaker near a wall as recommended and this adds to the difficulty of turning it on and off or adjusting the volume control, you really can’t see the controls and need to reach back and find the on/off switch and volume control by touch. You also cannot see the power light, so it is easy to forget to turn it off before retiring, leaving the subwoofer turned on all night, which has happened several times. Perhaps some sort of sharp looking front control panel and power light could have been designed that would have greatly improved the ease of use of the subwoofer. But this is a minor point and the sound quality is certainly worth the awkwardness and certainly outweighs any inconvenience the control location may cause.
All in all I highly recommend these speakers for any home theater system and for the price they CANNOT be beat!

Strengths: Small components produce surprisingly good sound. Decent power output. Enough for the average Joe.
Weaknesses: (This isn't a weakness unless you are a sound freak who needs to spend a lot o money) May not be suitable for the audio junkie who has to have his head knocked off by deafening sounds and $1000 bass.
Summary: Don't be fooled by the new deals roaming around the web like the ones that say "5.1 channel surround sound speakers with subwoofer, only $50." Don't get me wrong, that is a great price for speakers, and they will undoubtedly sound better than just your TV's speakers, but they are probably very weak compared to this set of Yamaha's. You also want to check and see whether the subwoofer in a $50 speaker set is powered or not. It most likely isn't. If you're willing to pay $60 or $70 more for these Yamaha's, you will enjoy the better quality sound for several years.
These Yamaha's list for $179.99 at places like BestBuy and other brand name electronics dealers. Yamaha has a 1-year product warranty, so don't waste your money buying "1 or 2 year extended service plans" from online retailers. If you have a problem with the speakers (at no fault of your own), Yamaha will cover it. I bought these for just $131 total (tax and shipping included) at Etronics. If you're wondering about Etronics, I've had good experiences with them in the past. Again, I didn't bother with the extended warranty or service plan.
All told, this is a great set of speakers for the price.

Strengths: Good and clear sound quality, reasonable price, and easy set-up.
Weaknesses: Up to 100 W/channel only. The black color seems a little old style.
Summary: I believe it is the best choice for buying Yamaha NS-SP1600 because of its price. I like it very much. First of all, the sound quality is much better than my computer speakers which are made by Creative. When I use it with my new pioneer 7.1 ch receiver, the sound is amazing. Furthermore, within this budget, I am not able to buy Onky and Bose, even Sony. If you use your paypal account to checkout, you can get a free shipping, which saves you some money. After all, as a experienced game player, I strongly recommend this speaker.

Strengths: Small and visually pleasing, you just wouldn't think these things could rock your house the way they do!
Weaknesses: Still can't think of any.
Summary: CRANK IT UP! This speaker package rounds out my home theater setup, and there's nothing better than watching movies with true surround sound. You hear every little thing that you were meant to hear, like background voices and sounds that you missed the first 5 times you watched your favorite movie. When I saw that Peter Frampton was on HDNET this summer, I CRANKED IT UP.....best damned speakers I've ever owned!!

Strengths: Value
Weaknesses: There are smaller altneratives
Summary: Good Sound from compact sources. Not nearly as expensive as the competitive alternates in the industry, and sounds nearly as good as the "B" brand. Just moved up from an old 4.0 surround system, and am very pleased.
