Daewoo DP42SM 42" Plasma TV

Weaknesses: no tuner. glitches in the picture etc. no DVI

Summary: I also noticed a wide stripe (about 5-6 in) on the left side of the TV screen which looked different from other part of the image. I figured i would make use of the whopping $249 i think maybe more 2 yr replacment plan sold by compusa. when i called the # they said it had to go through the manufacturer for the first year so I called Daewoo and they finally sent a box for me to put it in and fax them it was ready to be picked up. Well its been sitting in the box for weeks and I called and faxed every day and they give me a run around and i dont have a number to call the ppl i need to only a fax #. So there it sits. Now compusa says that that info i received was wrong and that they do handle the repair/replacement. So we will see what they can do it about it because they dont have any in stock at any of the stores in the entire surrounding areas where I am and pretty far out which includes a lot of stores. They said it includes home service but i dont know what techs are going to be able to do when they see the bar I and the other reviewr spoke of plus i see some othe minor artifacts during black background. So i hope i didnt mess it up anymore getting it in the box as it was harder then getting it out plus it was a dirty box they gave me and I had to unscrew the speakers and stand. I'm going to set it up in the bedroom and while it isn't maybe the best tv for main home theatre , it is pretty nice for bedroom. Problem is the picture i'm afraid is going to be horrible just hooked through daewoo dvd/vcr as tuner and that wont include any digi or HD chans as it will cost another $9/mo supposedly to get another digital cable hd box.

Anyone know of any other set top box that works well with the tv. I've heard a samsung one though not sure which model makes the regular channels even look good but comcast told me that you can't get all the other channels or any hd content without their cable box. Supposedly you can return the item in this case being the tv with the replacment plan but my experience so far on the plans from compusa is that they do not honor them at all so we'll see, plus I can't see finding as good let alone better plasma for 1,999 though i have bought enough other stuff from compusa but they prob wont let me return the stuff and rebuy with the credit if thats what they issue me. I mean there are other things good about the tv including the high contrast rate and HD chans look really good. In fact some ppl think that ED is largely inferior to HD but the truth is an ED tv especailly the plasmas make HD content look very good and most ppl cant tell the difference from a true hd plasma as it is very minute if at all.

If they do give me credit or maybe since they dont have any in stock I will get to choose a different plasma but the next cheapest they have i thin is the viewsonic which is more and doesnt' look as good. So i dont know what they are going to do because i highly doubt they are going to be able to fix the bar that I and the other reviewer spoke of or any picture glitches by sending techs out to look at it.

I would still recommend this TV though just beware that some do have some picture anomalies which i think is common in a lot of plasmas.

I bought this tv from bestbuy and had a large blac ...

Strengths: It's cheap and you get a good picture, if it works.

Weaknesses: Daewoo customer support and service is lousy.

Summary: I bought this tv from bestbuy and had a large black line running down the screen after the first month. Spent months on the phone with bestbuy, repair center, and daewoo. Daewoo was unhelpful, slow, and unconcerned about our problem. It took us 6 months for the repair, which didn't work. Then another 2 months we have waited for the new tv. Daewoo had to wait and make sure the old plasma was not repairable before they shipped us a new one. We watched the superbowl on our car 9" tv. Take my advice, spend the extra money and buy a brand that stands behind its product. Daewoo is the worst company I have ever dealt with and I would not have spent $2000 (back then) if I had known I would be without a tv for 8 months. I have worked with other companies, Sony, IBM and have alwlays had good service in a timely manner. Daewoo just does not stand behind their product and you will suffer for it.

DP-42SM is Plasma EDTV with supporting 480P mode. ...

Strengths: Price, Price, Price!!! Nice picture with good brightness. Looks pretty.

Weaknesses: No speaker, No Tuner

Summary: 2004-07-24 17:17:08 DP-42SM is Plasma EDTV with supporting 480P mode. In picture quality, it is very satisfactory compare with the orther EDTVs. Tone of color is very natural and bright. And it has pretty shape and will be look very beautiful in your livingroom. It came with me free metalic stand. However it does not have TV tuner and speeaker. It means it is just "monitor". You need additional sound system such as home theater or matching speaker and also need tuner from cable set top box or VCR. I arranged my system of DP-42SM with connecting VCR and hometheater. After then it works of fine in picture and sound. But there is big problem. When I wanna change source between TV-VCR-DVD, you need every romote control with complex procedure. My wife and kid always called whenever they wanna changed signal. That's why I retured them to Bestbuy after 1 month trail. If you are very handy to control those things, it will be good to you. It has very nice picture with affordable price. But it is not, go to everything inclouded model.

One more thing, if you wanna pick it up from retail store, you need the truck instead of minvan. Original package is taller than expected. It is less compact packing by locating the stand on the top of displayer.

And in the display what I had did not show the problem decribed above such as visble line.

I have owned the Daewoo since Thanksgiving of 2003 ...

Strengths: Picture quality, price

Weaknesses: Non yet.

Summary: I have owned the Daewoo since Thanksgiving of 2003. I am very pleased with the picture quality. I do not notice the imperfections others have mentioned. I have the unit mounted on the wall and connected to my system via an Onkyo a/v receiver.

The inputs seem very flexible. I use the component inputs to connect my DVD player and the composite inputs to connect my DirecTV unit and VCR. The "stretch" mode works really nice with the non-EDTV signals. It uses the full screen without distorting the picture.

I got this for $2599 - $300 rebate. I would buy it again.

I purchased this plasma from Best Buy really cheap ...

Strengths: Low Price, Very Goog-Looking

Weaknesses: Structure of the cells - lines too visible

Summary: I purchased this plasma from Best Buy really cheap. However, when I received it, I've noticed a wide stripe (about 5-6 in) on the left side of the TV screen which looked different from other part of the image in Normal mode and even worse in Dynamic picture mode. So, lowering the Contrast mostly solved this, but it is very visible on all-grey image (like the one that my DVD-player sent when stopped playing). In this case this stripe has a significant green color (instead of grey).

So, I went to Best Buy and ordered a replacement. However, while waiting for replacement, I realized that there are more fundamental things I didn't like about this TV. The problem is probably with the structure of the cells: they are slightly longer vertically than in other plasma TVs (like Panasonic, Samsung). Probably due to this I can see the lines on the image (especially on red color). In other words, the image is not very smooth, you can see that it is composed of lines. I watch the TV from about 7-8 feet. I didn't pay attention to this while buying it because I though that from distance the cells will not be visible. First, I thought that this is because it is EDTV, not HDTV. But, I was wrong. I didn't see any lines on Panasonic from even shorter distances.

In addition, even images from DVD look sometimes edgy (eyes and eyebrows on faces look like they have a much lower resolution).

TV is going back to Best Buy tomorrow. I do not want a replacement, just returning.
