Strengths: Good picture quality from DLP technology. Quiet. Inexpensive!
Weaknesses: Not easy to setup.
Summary: I only had this projector for 1 day and would like to share my thoughts about it.

The picture quality is superb for a non-hd projector. It's native wide screen at resolution 854*480. The black level and contrast are all very good at econo mode. My HTPC has no problem detected it correctly. But be careful if you are using Intel graphics - the Intel doesn't support custom resolution and you won't be able to have 1:1 pixel match.

Long throw lens and big offset are 2 significant issues. You have to have at around 13" throw distance to have a 92" picture size. You'll have to ceiling mount it because of the big offset. Unless you can put it on a coffee table in front of you.

I got it for under $800 with a free 92" screen. At this price, I really can not complain too much. I would say if you have a good size room and is tight on budget, go for it!

Strengths: Awesome picture even at sizes up to 120"
Weaknesses: Very large offset, means the projector needs to be mounted very low for table top use or when mounted to the ceiling requires physically pointing the unit upward rather than level.
Summary: To start with I love this projector. Like many people, I have a very large investment in analog TV and as such have not yet upgraded my home to support HDTV. I purchased this unit to use as a dedicated home theatre projector to watch DVD's. I am currently projecting the image on a 117" fixed screen with 1.0 gain. The image is stunning. The colors and contrast (specifically black levels) are nothing short of spectacular. The brightness of 850 lumens requires a dark room but it is worth it. In short, there is nothing like a true "big screen" to watch movies on. Plasmas and LCD panels are nice but anything under 100" cannot give you a true movie experience. And for roughly $1000.00 you cannot go wrong with this projector. For me it has been worth every penny.

Strengths: Superb image quality, deep color saturation, superb black levels and contrast (the best I have seen on any projector in this price range and on up to $4000). ImageAI, Minimal pixel SDE, very quiet.
Weaknesses: Brightness takes some calibration get get right color needs calibration.
Summary: This unit is superb in every possible way. Light weight, bright enough, gorgeous picture quality, deep black levels and contrast, and a great deal of settings. Each input has it's own picture settings and there is a 2 position built in image shift function and another one on the remote. I have owned all sorts of projectors but this one is the best one I have had so far out-shining the Optoma H31, infocus 4805, and the BenQ 6100. The best entry level projector I have ever used. A winner!!!

Strengths: 4001:1 (NOT 2000:1) due to Optoma's Image AI Technology. Lower lumens / lower wattage > less heat, longer life?
Weaknesses: none? Seemingly low lumens, but no prob. even in large room w/o curtains...less heat=>possibly longer bulb life(?)
Summary: 2006-09-25 07:31:50 Actually has 4000:1 contrast ratio due to Image AI (according to the Optoma web site), surpassing the H31's 3000:1. My friend had H27 in large room w/ no curtains & I was convinced. Got it for ~$700 ($750 w/ shipping) with free 92" grey wolf screen at www.Costco.com (which oddly enough doesn't come up on price comparison sites).

Used DAILY (4-12 hrs) in my light-challenged livingroom for ~ 1 month now... Not a single bad thing to say.

Setup was simple. Set on coffee table ~ 10 ft from screen, perfect fit & alignment to screen (so the throw distance works for me, but if it didn't, seems easy 'nuff to place it on higher table, etc). It's never been too hot to touch, and the image is better than my flatscreen TV.

I'm using component video cables (i.e., the red, green, & blue ones) which cost ~$30-$50 (rad shak) & don't come very long (not like coaxial you could run down the street for $50). H27 also takes RCA & Svideo, works via XBOX and via our surround-sound receiver (i.e., you don't need a TV).

Strengths: Picture quality, brightness (I know it's only 850 lumens), quiet operation, fast startup, connection options
Weaknesses: Throw is higher than I would have liked
Summary: I'm far from a projector expert but I know what looks good for watching DVDs - and this does. My Dell 2300MP died after 15 months (was going to cost $1200 to fix it - more than I paid!) The repair shop said they liked the Optoma brand (I hadn't heard of it) so I started reading and the reviews were good. I was very skeptical because it only had 850 lumens and my Dell was 2300.

I unpacked the projector and was careful to keep everything in the box because I expected I'd be disappointed and would return it. Surely 850 would be too dark. I was amazed when I turned it on. I guess I don't understand lumens because this projector with 1/3 the lumens seemed twice as bright. Colors were vibrant, the picture seemed much brighter than my Dell, black levels and contract looked great and I saw details I hadn't seen before.

My 10 year old just said he likes this projector a lot more because he can play dark levels in Lego Star Wars (PS2) and he could only play light levels before. A couple of other observations: I've been bothered by the rainbow effect on other projectors but don't see it at all on this one (4X color wheel) - projector warms up quickly and it's quiet. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to setup an inexpensive home theater.

Strengths: Vivid picture quality, detailed shadow presentation, easy operation
Weaknesses: high throw angel make it difficult to mount, a little low lumens
Summary: 2006-10-24 15:58:46 I got this one with Costco's deal so it came with a Graywolf II 92in screen. I'm very happy with it because it makes my "home theatre for cheap" possible. :) Everything I have to put on it is displayed in great shape, the projector is smart to automatically adjust picture ratios, and it has great details in playing my movies. I play games with it and it blew me away! The only grudge is like others have mentioned, the throw angle issue. It's too big that I have to put it very low in order to have my desirable screen height. I hope Optoma had made it smaller...but anyway, this is great for the bucks and I don't see the necessity of buying a 720p projector, this little 480p is already good enough!
