Strengths: Fantastic! You can hold it lightly and that difference in the orientation of the wrist so that the thumb is up rather than to the side, makes an incredible difference to my wrist and forearm.
Weaknesses: I was using a rollerball, so I had to get used again to moving the device around like a mouse to position the cursor. No extra utility available yet for XP (very dumb) but it works fine w/out that.
Summary: 2004-10-04 13:22:21 3M allows 30 days so you can get used to the...I call it a joystick; 3M calls it an ergonomic mouse, which is more accurate. They ask you to return it to them if it's not your cup of tea.

I bought one for work.

Because of this exerience, I am considering switching to one of those keyboards that has the left and right sets of keys angled and slightly raised - I have found that much difference in comfort from this mouse.

Strengths: All of the well-documented ergonomic features. It really is the best mouse design.
Weaknesses: Manufacturing quality is not great. No mouse ball option.
Summary: I have used three of these ergo mice at different work and home locations. While I find the design to be a great improvement over any other pointer product, I am disappointed with the manufacturing quality and the apparent decision to go optical and drop the ball, so to speak. The last time I purchased one, I had to send it back because the left button had too much slack before contacting the switch. I had to press the button down flat with the casing before it would make contact. I sent it back to the vendor and received another one with the exact same problem. Rather than waste more time with returning, I just hot-glued a thin wedge to the left side of the rocker button to get the leverage to make easy switch contact. This problem seems to be caused by a systematic misplacement of something in the switch assembly.

Meanwhile, my older mouse has developed a different left button weakness. It has very little slack and it clicks easily, but I now have to press past the click before it actually makes switch contact. This started after less than two years of use. This means I have to click harder to make it work and it slows down my double clicks. Not a good feature for an ergonomic mouse.

My final complaint is that this vertical mouse seems to be available only in an optical version. I appreciate the value of replacing a mechanical, ball-driven with an optical system that never wears out, but I find the optical version somewhat frustrating when I need to lift the mouse and move it. Because of stress injury to my wrist and arm, my movement is not quick and accurate, so I need to use a fairly slow speed for pointer movement. This means I often have to lift and reposition the mouse. Because the optical system keeps working while the mouse is just above the mouse pad, I have to lift it straight up and put it straight down to keep the pointer from "sliding" back. This is annoying.

After I discovered the 3M vertical mouse, I was so happy with it that I immediately bought another one and started spreading the word to friends and forums. Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend it without some reservations.

Strengths: innovative design
Weaknesses: price
Summary: for anyone diagonised with carpal tunnel syndrome, this 3M vertical mouse definitely helps in a number of ways. Because of the vertical design, there is minimum stress imposed on your wrist when moving the cursor. The only downside for this product is its price. I'd say the manufacturing cost is less than one fifth of what is being sold for.
