decent
Strengths: price
Weaknesses: mids, auto on/off feature on sub
Summary: Overall, I'm very satisfied with these speakers. I've not been blown away by them, but for the price I wasn't really expecting to be. I really just needed a cheap way to fill out my 6.1 receiver and make it do all of its work, whereas before I just had some circa 1972 floor speakers in stereo mode. This has been an affordable way to fill in the gaps. The highs are very clear, the mids leave something to be desired, and the lows are nice and round.
The auto-off feature of the sub is a good idea but poor in execution, as the sub will turn off after the preset length of time in the middle of playback during prolonged quiet or hushed passages, and it takes about 10 seconds to start back up once the bass kicks in again. Sometimes it doesn't start back up at all. Of course, if it does, it's 10 seconds too late, and the effect is basically ruined. I just end up using the sub without this feature, and turning it on/off manually. It's easier and less frustrating than having a climactic moment made anticlimactic because of a lack of punch.
Setup was a breeze, and the process was made that much easier by Yamaha's inclusion of plenty of speaker wire, pre-labeled at each end for speaker identification. I wire my speakers through the ceiling because I have ceiling tiles, so having enough wiring to go up and down walls and across the room is typically a concern. I was ready to go out and get a bunch of speaker wire, but they include more than enough for most rooms, with front right, left, and center speakers each having 4m (~13ft) of wire each, and the surround and rear center speakers each having 15m (~50ft).
Overall, I would definitely recommend these speakers to the budget-conscious consumer. They work, they sound alright, and it's one of the cheapest 6.1 solutions I was comfortable with. Bottom line: at this price, if don't expect the world, you probably won't be disappointed.
