1 Star ReviewI got this thing because I have a Sony DVD player ...
Strengths: Standard; DTS 6.1, ect ect
Weaknesses: ONE - You can't use the component ins for a DVD player that has progressive scan.
Summary: I got this thing because I have a Sony DVD player with progressive scan and I wanted to hook up the DVD to the receiver via component cables (Green, Red, Blue). Well guess what? If you do that the signal gets distorted at certain times while watching a DVD. I spoke directly to Sony and they have confirmed this to be true and the only way to fix the problem is to run the DVD straight into the TV and NOT through the receiver! What a joke! At first I thought it was my TV so I thought nothing of it. Then, after a month or so I investigated and found out too late so I can't return it! BEWARE!!! The signal blacks out and I can not have the progressive scan on my DVD player active. What's the point right? Well, Sony dropped the ball on this one. Why have component video ins and outs available if the signal can't pass through them correctly? Don't buy it!

2 Star ReviewA total pain to set up and I have set up many. As ...
Strengths: Not very deep therefore easy to acess back panel.
Weaknesses: does not allow s video out to your monitor or tv. None of the svideo out/in works. No on screen set up menu.
Summary: A total pain to set up and I have set up many. As stated above svideo plugs were useless. Sound was sub par. I purchased at another retailer and brought it back a week later. Exchanged it for an Onkyo str-601 and had that one set up in 10 minutes. no 800 # for help, sony.com did not respond to my pleas for help.

Strengths: This unit has excellent sound quality. A good range of audio environments.
Weaknesses: A little unusual to setup, but no harder than the previous Sony receiver I had.
Summary: This Had all of the features I was looking for a home theater receiver. This unit was an excellent replacement for my damaged Sony 5.1 unit I had before this. It has all the main features you would look for in a good quality reciever at a low price. Coaxial in, optical in, multiple video ins/outs, plus 6 full channels.... It does however need an optical input for the DVD player. It has plenty of power for all the movies I've watched with it. Once you've setup the unit to work with a coaxial input from a DVD player your set. Push start and let the good times roll. The movie "Swat" is an excellent beginner 6.1 movie to start with..... My unit was well worth the money $299 & came with 3 speaker package to help a beginner with his first 5.1 setup. (Purchased my unit at Circuit City)
