1 Star ReviewMatrix 47 Screen Fogging up
Strengths: graphics
Weaknesses: moisture problem
Summary: I bought this unit on January 2006 and immediately I had moisture problem on the first day I took it out in the ocean in my sit-on-top kayak. On the second and third time the case was replaced my Humminbird, I had moisture problem immediately on the first day in the water. I am now returning this unit for the 4th time in less than a year to the manufacturer. I missed a lot of good fishing days because of this faulty unit. I do not recommend buying Humminbird Matrix 47.

Strengths: Incredible 3d presentation; Outstanding 2d view from 6 separate beams; expandable features
Weaknesses: Color would be great. High cost for B/W unit.
Summary: 2005-07-11 15:16:04 I mounted the Matrix 47 3d not knowing exactly what to expect. I have had the unit on the water several times now and am amazed at the clarity and target separation. I can clearly mark fish that I'm confident wouldn't have displayed on my previous unit. I connected my hand-held GPS via the humminbird connection cable and now have track-plotting and GPS speed. This is a great feature as well. The 3D presentation is remarkable in its ability to show you orientation of marked structure and fish to the boat. I can now not only tell at what depth a target was marked, but where in relation to the boat (far left, left, center, right, far right). The xducer bracket for the '47 is stainless steel. I've broken more mounts than transducers, so I view this as a great feature as well. The screen is B/W but resolution is ultra-sharp and easy to read even in direct sunlight. With 12-level grey scale, you get plenty of distinction beween the various items displayed. This would be an unsurpassed unit with 256 color, but the cost would most likely offset the value.

I'd highly recommend this unit to anyone serious about understanding the bottom terrain.

2 Star ReviewHumminbird Matrix 47 3D Fish Finder
Strengths: 3D - Sweet - Fish positioning indication – Super
Weaknesses: Fish Alarm seldom work - Repair Support Lacking
Summary: Humminbird has always been my fish finder of choice. The Matrix 47 does some real nice things which proves Humminbird’s determination to remain the leading source for fish finding. However there is one very solid disappointment with this unit. The fish alarm fails more often than it works. Perhaps this is the case because it performs so many loop functions. I’m very dependent on having an alarm so I was compelled after repeated failed attempts to switch for another model. I’m convinced that this is a common problem with the Matrix 47 because three separate units failed. Exchanging for the 777c2 (Plus additional $50 out of my pocket) left me with the alarm feature I need. Again I’m convinced that Humminbird knows many of these units have an alarm issue and they’re keeping it quiet. The process of attempted repair/replace was very time consuming and frustrating. I was very disappointing being put through all this to be later asked for $50 more due to unit price difference (which is likely a much smaller difference in manufacturing cost). I keep my boat in a slip some distance from my home, so I’m left with the final inconvenience of mounting the new unit transducer on a stick until year end. I expressed all of or this to a support Supervisor - Shame on Humminbird.

Final note: all the support people were very pleasant, I just feel admitting to the problem and doing an even swap would have been proper PR.
