Strengths: Cost, dependability, and compatability(+/-)
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I've burned 20+ with no problems at all. Some media burns relitively slower than the burner is capable, but quality media like Memorex and HP make it fly! Imation, K Hypermedia (ya, who's heard of this one?) and Optodisc not so good, but still burned with only one hitch. Speed... This drive is well worth the $107 I paid...

Strengths: This is the best piece of hardware I have ever bought. It is 100% compatable.
Weaknesses: NEC's usa website. Sux, goto their german site in english.
Summary: I have recoreded DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-R and CD-RW's in this drive and all have been successful. I have played the cds in my home unit and car player, all worked great. I have played the dvds in two different home units (Pioneer, Apex) as well as my dvd-rom and my Mac superdrive. All of them were great and had no problem reading. I bought the OEM package and have had no problems as far as firmware or drivers. Windows XP picked it up right away.

Strengths: Works perfectly. Excellent drive for the money.
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: The price was about $129 when I bought it, including Roxio 6.0.

The drive works perfectly so far, read and write

to DVD +/-RW, DVD +/-R easily. It also does CD -R/w and

CD-R no problem.

I burned about 30 DVD so far.

Strengths: HELLA CHEAP, HELLA FAST, HELLA RELIABLE, HELLA COMPABILITY, HELLA NICE!!!!
Weaknesses: NONE
Summary: Why buy sony DRU-510A or any other way over-price DVD burner when this one is very cheap and very reliable. Been using it for like a week now and it works fine.. Burned like 5 DVDs already, all work with my panasonic DVD player... This is the DVD burner to buy... dont bother with the other expensive stuff...

Strengths: Easy to use and the price is great at $209.00 with Nero Vision Express, Mpeg2 Encoder, Nero Express, Neromedia Player, InCD/Packet-Writing, EasyWrite Reader and dvd xcopy xpress
Weaknesses: time it takes to back-up an dvd is about 2hr 30 min
Summary: Good buy at $209.00 with software just hate to use dvd-r media, dvd+r media is better. Records great back-up and home dvd movies it's takes about 2hrs 30 min on my computer. But I'm running an duran 800 mhz with 128meg.

Strengths: Burns every CD/DVD format given, great price
Weaknesses: Slower Burning Speed than today's drives
Summary: 2004-10-04 10:08:38 I bought the NEC ND1300A DVD burner as a backup solution and I have to say I'm very happy to own it. Not only was the drive the right price, I was able to choose either beige or black for colors! Now I have a drive that burns and reads practically anything, but also one that matches my black case. The only quirk I see is that Nero has the dvd burn speed locked at 2x, which is odd, considering the drive is rated 4x for DVD+R and DVD-R media. Overall, I'm very satisfied to own this drive.

Update: The drive will burn nicely at 4x. I was only using 2x media.

1 Star ReviewI know there are a lot of great reviews about this ...
Strengths: Price, Dual Format, Makes great coasters
Weaknesses: Online support, Media Supported, coasters/dvd ratio
Summary: I know there are a lot of great reviews about this unit, that’s why I purchased one. However, my experience was not so great. I‘ve used several different types of media off the NEC recommended list and have not found any that would consistently record. I was getting over a 50% failure rate on some brands and about 20-30% on the best brands. I’m using Nero 6 and DVD X Copy which other have mentioned in their reviews. I upgraded the firmware to 1.08 and still have problems. Last night is stopped recording anything, so I sent it back and purchased a Sony DRU510A, it was about the same price with the $30 rebate off of Sony’s web site. I looked at Sony’s online support, which was much better than NEC’s, and it had several tools for trouble shooting problems and tweaking the speed. I have had NEC drive’s in the pas and have never had a problem. So maybe I just got a lemon this time, but it is frustrating.

Strengths: Price and dual format
Weaknesses: Firware version 1.08 gives problems.
Summary: 2003-12-22 09:35:38 It would not recognize any dvd with firmware version 1.08. I went back to version 1.07 and this baby works. I have burnt about 20 dvd so far and no coasters. NEC site has an updated firware version 1.09, i m going to try that see if it is any better that 1.07. Donot use use version 1.08.

I tested firmware 1.09, and everythig works just fine. Very good DVD writer IMO.

Strengths: Cheap, reliable, and ultimate
Weaknesses: weakness?
Summary: i have had this drive for 6 mouths or so. i havent had one dvd fail(i only have used verbatim) I use nero to burn dvd images at a sucessful 4x every single time. The drive being so cheap is an ultimate drive of doom. Nero 6 is great too. But now i here NEC has an 8x burner for around 100$. I shall check that out.

Strengths: Good product. Burns without a glitch in my 1.1 GHz Celeron PC. Came with Firmware version 1.08. I use TDK DVD+R 4X, one of the media recommended by NEC's website. Burn time is fast, about 16 min.
Weaknesses: OEM version does not come with manual, wires or even pair of screws needed in installation.
Summary: NEC 1300A, along with TDK DVD+R, seems to work fast and flawlessly in my humble machine, even when I installed it as slave. Firmware update beyond NEC's own 1.08 version is not necessary as long as you use their recommended media (Sony, Maxell, TDK, etc.) Neither the NEC 1300A nor your PC is to be blamed when someone uses cheaper media on sale. Again, search internet with your DVD player's model number whether there is any compatibility issue with DVD-/+R media.

Strengths: Works great in Linux (kernel 2.4). Writes CDs and DVDs.
Weaknesses: Firmware only for Windows or DOS users. No Linux tool for firmware upgrade.
Summary: I get this drive to work in linux with just about all the DVD authoring tools available. dvdrecord works well with this drive, just remember to use the -dao switch. Because it can write CDs and DVDs, you have the option to write VCDs instead of DVDs, to save on money. VCDimager is a great tool to do this. Writing data DVDs using this drive is a snap. It is really no different than writing data CDs, it's just that the ISO files can be larger -- as large as 4.7GB.

Strengths: Burns every kind of DVD thrown at it. I have burned over 200 DVDs so far and not one coaster. IT was easy to install, it was easy to upgrade the firmware and easy on the pocket.
Weaknesses: none that I can see other than it is slow recognizing a DVD when first put into it
Summary: I love this drive. Works with everything. I would recommend this to anyone. I use it with Nero 6 and DVD Shrink. You cannot possibly find a burner that works so well.

3 Star ReviewA decent burner (with DVD+ at least) for the cost. ...
Strengths: Cost, dual burner, speed (assuming you can find 4 speed media).
Weaknesses: Software is way too basic, DVD+ works great, but I haven't found a DVD-R that will work with this drive yet. It's starting to get expensive. CD write read/write speed is pretty slow.
Summary: A decent burner (with DVD+ at least) for the cost. You would be better off buying a better software package for DVD authoring. The biggest problems are that you can't edit any of the menue layouts or use your own personal images for DVD authoring, or import MPEG 2 files already converted in Adobe Premire.

Strengths: read other reviews
Weaknesses: UNK/see below
Summary: This review is not to "bash" this unit. It is to warn prospective buyers of possible compatability issues.

I have had this drive for 2 weeks. In that time I have been unable to make this drive function with my system. Based on the reviews here, and other reviews at different sites by owners with the same problems, I do not believe that the drive is malfunctioning or of low quality, simply that it is not compatable with my system. As a note, this is the first piece of hardware that I have been unable to satisfactorily install on a system which has perfromed flawlessly for 2 years. I have tried every possible trick I know, but to no avail. So, if you own a soyo based AMD system like myself.....Caveat Emptor

Strengths: multi formats - covers the bases - reputable manufacuter, proven quality and reliability. Great price!
Weaknesses: You're on your own for set up - No OEM support on this item from US website. Determaining brand of media to use? Nec could have thrown in a piece of paper with some informaiton.
Summary: Great price, great results, was up and burning in no time! No coasters after nine succesful attempts. Contact NEC Germany web site for product and list of blank media information.WWW.neceurope.com. Coming from a newbee.
