Strengths: Easy setup. Excellant bang for the buck.
Weaknesses: None so far.
Summary: Only one borrowed home-recorded DVD wouldn't play so far. Home recorded VHS tapes record & play on SLP beautifully. At times when running tape FF a clicking noise is heard but it seems to have no effect. This machine allowed us to consolidate 3 machines (VCR, DVD player, & CD player) into one, plus adding a card reader. We can't believe how much we are using the card reader, being able to view our pictures on a 73" projection tv compared to a 19" computer monitor.

Strengths: Nice affordable all in one unit with memory card slots
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: You can not beat this for the price. Progressive scan DVD player, VCR and a memory card slot reader at a very low price. So far this has been a great player with no problems. Easy to use and program.

Strengths: Versatile
Weaknesses: Poor reliability.
Summary: After 6 months, more reader failures evident. Tried using DVD cleaner - Maxell, and reader won't play cleaner. Failure manifests as "Still" images during play. Checked manual, and no cleaning instructions are provided.

Strengths: * Plays DVD-R, CD-R, even SVCD. Output quality is good, especially DVD!
Weaknesses: * Cannot access all functions from the console - must use the remote. Does not play PAL recordings
Summary: The Samsung DVD-V8500 seems to be well built, which was surprising in light of all the reports you read about combo units these days. Time will tell if the unit holds up, but out of the box, it performs great. Both DVDs and VHS tapes look good, particularly DVD content. The DVD drive played everything I threw at it as long at the recording was NTSC. A European PAL recorded disc failed to play. Otherwise the unit seems good and I am looking forward to getting some use out of it.
