Strengths: Slim, great picture clairity even with just component connection.
Weaknesses: No HDMI, no upconverting.
Summary: 2005-08-11 16:57:38 I bought this DVD player with my new 42" Panasonic plasma HDTV. Originally, I thought I was just going keep this player until the HD DVD players are released, but the picture quality on it is so good, I may just keep it.

My only concern is that the DVD play does not have HDMI output or upcoverting capabilities, so I don't know if I am getting as good of a picture quality as if I would have bought the Panasonic DVD-S77S model.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. Very good progressive scan DVD player for the money.

Strengths: High quality picture, easy to use remote control, multi-format playback, and great sound quality.
Weaknesses: None to my knowledge.
Summary: Panasonic thought of everything when they designed this dvd player. From its slim design to its multiple features. The picture quality is the best of the last two dvd players I recently owned, the same is true about the sound quality. This is also one of the easiest dvd players to use. I did not even have to read the manual to set up and begin using the many functions.

Strengths: All this for around $60...WOW! Slim, sleek. Great picture quality. Mulitple zoom options. Easy to navigate display menu. Plays my recorded discs like a charm.
Weaknesses: No HDMI, but no player in this price range will have that. So really, no weaknesses.
Summary: 2006-02-10 22:20:05 I bought this player for my wife to replace her 10 year old VCR. This is my 5th DVD player, her first. After a quick setup, and a short tutorial, she's operating it like a pro. I've owned 2 Pioneer and 3 Panasonic DVD players. This is the least expensive of the 5, but get this...It has the best picture quality of all of them! I don't know the term for the quick 'interuption' in signal a player experiences when some DVD's have explosions and quick color changes (does that make sense?)....this player never has that. My $400 Pioneer does. I would highly reccomend to anyone not needing HDMI.

Strengths: Plays with most any type disk. The player is low profile and sleek. A nice design for anyone needing a DVD player that looks good and has great performance.
Weaknesses: Not region free. It would be beneficial to make DVD players multiregion to allow different DVD media regions to use them. Families in Asia and Europe need to have DVD players compatiable with the US.
Summary: The Panasonics DVD-S29 worked flawlessly the first time. Just read the simple directions, plug it in and you are basically set. It takes most all media types and isn't picky. The case design is eye catching and it really presents a good picture on the TV.

Strengths: - Replay mode: replays the last few seconds of your DVD so you can catch something you missed (like hard to hear dialogue) - Fast disk ejection (i'm impatient) - Reads just about any disc format
Weaknesses: - Not so enthusiastic about the layout of the remote control
Summary: This DVD player is great. My wife is absolutely in love with it. It reads just about any type of disc (DVD-R, DVD+R. DVDRAM, etc.) and can play/display many data formats (.jpg, mp3, etc.). That's really great for a DVD player. It has a lot more cool features than I am used to having in a DVD player including on screen displays (for instance if you want to see what track you are on and how many minutes in), menu and root menu button (lets you get to the main menu or the root menu quickly)...oh, and the menu button has allowed us to skip the video at the beginning of the DVD which other players forced you to watch (such as the FBI warning and previews) - that by itself makes this thing ooooooh so worth it!

Strengths: slim, great picture, 480p capabilities, price
Weaknesses: My only complaint was a lack of optical connection, but I'm using the component audio
Summary: I previously owned the Panasonic rv31 (was still working perfectly), but I wanted to upgrade to a progressive model. I found this model for $50 after rebates, so I couldn't pass on it. I love it, and it's well worth the money I paid...

Strengths: Set up was super easy.
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: My old cheap DVD player started freezing so I needed a new one. I found this one for a great price at Amazon.com (free shipping too!). It plays all formats that I have tried including DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and of course prerecorded movies. I have not tried playing CDs or MP3s since I don't have this player hooked up to my stereo system. The DVS-S29 loads discs much faster than my old player.

I recommend this item for price, ease of use, style.

Strengths: Ease of use, picture quality
Weaknesses: Limited output options, not so comfortable remote.
Summary: I bought this DVD player from Amazon.com a month ago as a secondary DVD player for my living room. I have been quite satisfied with the quality of picture for the price I paid. It played DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD RW and VCD without problems.

Strengths: slim profile, plays my burned DVD's just fine
Weaknesses: none
Summary: I spent $65 on this panasonic to replace a 1-week $40 COBY one.

The COBY one ended up being awful, the construction quality was like a child's toy, it garbled my burned DVDs, and the remote was ridiculous, the labels were BELOW the tiny buttons, kept hitting the wrong ones. Also, the remote had to aimed perfectly at it, took several tries for it to register. AND, the remote wouldn't turn the player on/off, you had to do that physically. AND turns out COBY doesn't provide a code to let you control its devices with universal remotes.

In each way that the COBY disappointed, this Panasonic was a breath of fresh air. Quality sturdier, played my burned DVDs with no problems. Remote had big spacious buttons, which registered with no effort no matter where I aimed. And I didn't have to get up to turn the dvd player on and off. And I could program my cable remote to operate it easily. All things you figure should be standard on any DVD player, only they weren't when I tried to be cheap and get that $40 COBY.

My experience supports the one good thing about name brands, it's brainless, and you will be safe with the product you order. With the no-names, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Strengths: Plays just about anything-- SVCD, DVD-R, mp3s, etc.
Weaknesses: Doesn't remember position of some DVDs.
Summary: I tried many different disc types and it played everything so far. I was afraid it wouldn't play SVCD but it did.

It plays manufactured DVDs and DVD-R. I will have to try DVD+R but according to specs, it plays them too.

One caveat about remember the position of DVDs--the DVD has to support that. I have some burned DVDs that it did not resume when it left off. (It's supposed to remember positions of up to 5 DVDs).

The design of some other players is better, but this one works for me. It's better than my cheap Magnavox that starts to overheat and choke after about 30 mins.

Not all features are available for all DVDs.

Strengths: Plays all formats, slim design, Panasonic quality
Weaknesses: Remote could use a better design, eject/open a little slow
Summary: I've tried other brands at a similar pricepoint, but nothing beats the value and performance of this DVD player. It plays all avaialble formats and does so without confusion or hesitation. It's light, slim, nicely-designed; in a word — SWEET! I'm sure something will come along in the not-too-distant future which will offer a richer feature set, but for the time being this is the one you should buy!
