Pentax 20x60 PCF WP II Binoculars
Strengths: Pentax aspherical optical elements w/
BAK-4 prisms & field flattener lenses.
Weaknesses: Too much eye relief causing blackout. Pentax's tripod adapter, which has to be purchased seperately, is poorly designed & constructed. Tripod or monopod required.
Summary: 2006-11-16 22:48:18 I purchased this 20X60 because I wanted a powerful quality binocular at a reasonable price. I use it for astronomy & for long distance bird watching. For stargazing you must mount it on a tripod if you hope to take full advantage of the optics. I also use a tripod for watching birds but a monopod might work well for some. This bino is big but not too big when compared to other 20x binoculars.
There are three things that I dislike about them: too much eye-relief which causes blackout; I sent mine in to Pentax to check the collimation because I couldn't get 100% sharp focusing; You need to purchase a Pentax TP-3 tripod adapter separately & it is poorly designed. (It is too thin to satisfactorily dampen vibrations & the washer lacks sufficient rubber surface to keep the binocular tightly in place).
I recently looked through a Pentax 20x60 PCF WP II binocular at a local sporting goods store & it did not have the blackout problem that mine has. Perhaps the newer versions have corrected the problem.

I sent mine back, again, to Pentax Service Department for replacement. The blackout from the eyepieces is still too bothersome.
