Strengths: Wide range of data rinterfaces for an external unit--- USB 1.1 and 2.0 plus fire wire. Also has a 8 mb buffer... and reads writes to basically all formats. And all at a good price--- comparatively
Weaknesses: Not many downsides.... there is little documentation to get you started.
Summary: This has been a winner for me from the beginnning. I wanted a drive that I could use to pull data off an old lap top. USB 1.1 compatability in an external drive was necessary for this purpose. This was one of the few drives that I could find that had this feature. (Perhaps others work as well, but I found an internet posting that confirmed this wrive worked with USB 1.1) As long as I was paying the premium for an external drive, I preferred having DVD RW included. I have now Written data to disks, copied disks, used DVD RW sucessfully.

There is included SW that is supposed to allow using a DVD RW disk as if the drive was an external hard drive... (random access to wirte and delete.) This sounds good (like DVD RAM) but functionality not yet tested by me.

Others have said the SW bundle is small... I have no comparison, but it seemed ok for me

I has an 8mb buffer.... many other units have only 2 mb.. this is supposed to be a good thing

I bought it for 260 with tax and shipping....

and discovered that there is a 30 rebate after buying it

Over all, I think it is a great value to have such a versitle drive that is flexible to move around and use with all media reading and writing challenges

Strengths: Easy to set up Easy to operate Maximum flexibility
Weaknesses: None
Summary: Very happy with operation and performance of hardware and software. This unit was highly recommended to me by a gentleman who builds desktops, laptops, and specializes in systems software and hardware for the production of home videos.

Strengths: Cheap, 8 mb buffer, aesthetically pleasing
Weaknesses: 4x only, but still fast enough for me. Software bundle could be better.
Summary: I bought this drive for $109 refurbed from Overstock and it works GREAT! Already "backed up" a lot of my DVD's and no messups yet. I bought 1 Click DVD software (highly recomend) and it works great. I also made a dvd from my digital camera with the software that came with the burner and that worked great. I love this burner. Oh yeah, and it will burn up to 8x if you update the firmware like I did. Enjoy!

Strengths: Very easy to set up. Easy to upgrade the firmware to v1-d. Smooth and quiet running. Reliable.
Weaknesses: Consider $$$ paid, the software included is not really the best on the market.
Summary: 2003-10-24 15:58:17 Bought a brand new Sony DRX-510UL from newegg.com at $269 (free S&H) in early October. I tried a few external DVD burners from other brands but I was not happy with them. This time I try Sony DRX-510UL. It is absolutely the best. It is worth the money spent.

This external drive is really a blast. I have been using this Sony DRX-510UL for 2 weeks. It works like a charm. Unlike other brands, never have a coaster with Sony. I am using Memorex DVD+R 4x 25-disc pack bought from BestBuy with $29.95 and don't have a coaster. It burns fast (with 4x, just 15 min for a full disc) and the quality is very good.

If you are a first time user play around with a DVD burner, try to use a DVD+/-RW at first; just in case you make a mistake, you can erase and reuse it. It is not the drive defect, it's just you are ... new.

I personally do not like the interface of the software given with the drive. So I use my own software (Nero, DVDXcopy,..) and they work quite well with Sony DRX-510UL. If you chose to use the software come with the drive, I am sure they work well too because I guess Sony already tested them on the drive.

    8 Months
Strengths: Can burn just about any kind of media available without a bunch of coasters
Weaknesses: none
Summary: This DVD burner does everything you'll need. The included Record Now software does a good job closing the DVDs so you can play them on your regular DVD player. I've been using it for 8 months and still haven't produced any coasters. The DRX530UL will let you burn 8x DVDs with a firmware update if you're a speed demon. If the fastest speed isn't important then this is the drive for you.

Strengths: Easy to set up; simple straight-forward software makes it goof proof.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: I burned 8 DVD-R's immediately without a coaster. Anyone who can't burn DVD's with this unit should forget about burning DVD's at all. Another fine product from Sony technology.
