Strengths: Wide range of data rinterfaces for an external unit--- USB 1.1 and 2.0 plus fire wire. Also has a 8 mb buffer... and reads writes to basically all formats. And all at a good price--- comparatively
Weaknesses: Not many downsides.... there is little documentation to get you started.
Summary: This has been a winner for me from the beginnning. I wanted a drive that I could use to pull data off an old lap top. USB 1.1 compatability in an external drive was necessary for this purpose. This was one of the few drives that I could find that had this feature. (Perhaps others work as well, but I found an internet posting that confirmed this wrive worked with USB 1.1) As long as I was paying the premium for an external drive, I preferred having DVD RW included. I have now Written data to disks, copied disks, used DVD RW sucessfully.
There is included SW that is supposed to allow using a DVD RW disk as if the drive was an external hard drive... (random access to wirte and delete.) This sounds good (like DVD RAM) but functionality not yet tested by me.
Others have said the SW bundle is small... I have no comparison, but it seemed ok for me
I has an 8mb buffer.... many other units have only 2 mb.. this is supposed to be a good thing
I bought it for 260 with tax and shipping....
and discovered that there is a 30 rebate after buying it
Over all, I think it is a great value to have such a versitle drive that is flexible to move around and use with all media reading and writing challenges
